8GB DIGITAL MEDIA PLAYER

8GB DIGITAL MEDIA PLAYER
  • MEMOREX 01793 8GB TOUCH MP3 PLAYER BLACK

I really love this TouchMP although I must say I didn't always feel this way. First of all let me say that the instruction manual is on the software and the quick start instructions seemed to cause more problems than good. I also believe that a lot of the reviews are from those like myself who just take for granted that we've had mp3 players before and we automatically know what to do with this right out the box. My first mistake was I didn't let it charge fully and was anxious and to load it without reading the instructions on the software. I successfully loaded music and the album art was there for a brief couple of minutes before disappearing. Anxiously again I loaded the audiobook after installing the audio software and after doing so it just went blank and I too assumed that it had crashed. I couldn't power it on or off and the navigation lights wouldn't go off and my computer wouldn't recognize it through the usb portal and stated "malfunction and no drivers detected", I was so stressed trying to get this thing going. After letting it sit out for about a day, I noticed the navigation blue lights had went out and although I was determined to send this what I had assumed defective product back, I gave it one more try. I plugged it in, pc recognized it and all my music was still there. After a full charge, I loaded about 15 albums and synced with no problem (and all album art was there). My audio book was even on there. I absolutely love this product, music is pristine clear , the radio is the same and the audiobook feature works great. Easy to navigate through and other than not being wifi accesible, it's the greatest value out there. I actually bought one for a friend also and she has no problems, she too thought hers had crashed but reset it and no problems. I do recommend this product, just read the instructions, let it fully charge initially and you should be fine.

I bought 2 of these mp3's one was damaged when I recieved it and and memorex still hasn't exchanged it for me. The other player was a gift this one is work great. The person I bought it for loves it. I bought this units from info-technology ,since they don;t have a return policy I'll never buy from this company again.

This is an excellent choice for an Mp3/video player!! First, let me say that the review is written for the 4gb not the 8gb as shown. The seller didn't list it correctly!!

The sound quality is above average!! Warning I'm not an ear-bud person! I listen to my Mp3 player using a pair of Radioshack Pro 35A Headphones with titanium drivers!! The sound is perfect!!

Battery life is also perfect! With no problems at all! The one drawback for some will be that first charge is for 3 to 4 hours. After that first charge, charge times decreased to about 45min.

The expansion port for the micro sd card has some problems! Don't buy an 8gb micro sd card for this player. It will work for awhile then massive problems will happen including: Album art will suddenly and for no reason disapear! The player will become contaminated for no reason. And finally, music and or video's won't play!! After knowing this I bought an 4gb micro sd card and didn't have any problems!!

At this current time the player doesn't have any optional goodies!! There is no protective case!! No charger stand!! No sound port or docking station!!

The screen is nice and large!! The protective coating on it still doesn't have a scratch on it, even after shoving it into my pocket and carrying it around in there!!

The key lock slider works as it should with no problems!!

I have dropped this once on carpet with no apparent problems!! After the memory card problem!!

I'm enjoying this player!! Quick easy access to Windows media player!! Above average sound quality!! 1 current problem (don't use 8gb micro sd cards on this). However, 4gb cards are trouble free!! Scratch free screen without a protective case!! But no extra's or goodies!! No sound port or docking station!! No charger stand!! I know you will enjoy yours when you get it!!

I'm a working musician that loves music!!!

Brought 2 of these. One lasted for less than a year, then crashed. The other was brought as a Xmas gift. The person I brought MP3 player for did not get around to opening it until February. Once opened, they plugged it into their PC to charge and it immediately crashed. I can understand one defective MP3 player, but when you end up with 2 defective players it means that Memorex is obviously producing junk. Buy at your own risk!

I had the same trouble others did with the software. I first thought it was a driver issue when I couldn't turn it

on the first time. After a number of tries to reload the driver it still didn't work so I tried to press the reset button and it started right up. Unfortunately this was not in the faqs so I had to do a google search to find the problem.

The instructions should be followed since it's important that the unit be fully charged before doing anything with it.

EMPIRE Gold Stylus Pointer for HTC DROID DNAI was looking for a stylus to use with the Notes app on my Droid DNA. instead of using fingertip writing, I wanted a stylus in order to refine taking notes, i.e. smaller, concise writing. But due to it's large blunt end it is only slightly better than using fingertip writing.

It is very responsive with all other aspects of Droid DNA screen use.

Great stylus. Just the right size and touch for my Android DNA. Have tried others but this one wins hands down.

iHome 3-in-1 Stylus Pen for with Microfiber Tip and Built-in Laser Pointer and LED LightWhen it arrived, inside a Amazon box with a couple of other items, the package was crushed. The stylus, however, appeared to be intact. Within 2 weeks of average use, though, the cover which made it work really well at first, was coming apart. So, I have a laser pointer and flashlight. I hope others have had better luck.

The stylus part of this pen works fine. The issue is there is no documentation to be found on what size battery it takes to use the light / laser pointer. Looked on the box, looked online, contacted iHome support. Nothing. I've tried AA, AAA, and AAAA. None fit. Rather frustrating to say the least.

Edit: Finally figured out it takes 3 LR41 / AG3 cells. iHome was of no use in finding out this info. Laser and light work well.

[4 In 1] EasyAcc Portable Wifi Wireless SD Card Reader & USB External HDD / SDD / USB Flash Disk Re

[4 In 1] EasyAcc Portable Wifi Wireless SD Card Reader & USB External HDD / SDD / USB Flash Disk Reader for iPad 4 mini / iPhone 5 4s / Nexus 7 / Samsung galaxy tab and other Smartphone & Tablets, Built-in 8800mah External Battery Pack can Charge your Smartphone and Portable Wifi Router FunctionI was supplied this free to test and review.

Tested using iPad2, a generic Chinese Android tablet and a HP Windows 8 laptop.

I have not seen a gadget before that enables a tablet without expandable storage to have access to almost limitless memory for storage. In addition to this it can act as a wireless router and a backup battery for phones etc.

Out of the box it needs charging and comes with a usb charging lead to connect to your own charger as it charges 4 blue leds progressively light and flash until all 4 are on steadily and it is then fully charged and ready to use.

As the set up seemed quite complicated I followed the fairly comprehensive instructions which were enclosed. After downloading the "FTP Manager" from Google Play and installing it (I used the Android tablet first) I then followed the instructions and was met with the message "Server not Found". It is probably apparent to everyone except me that the server would not be found until I logged on to the Wi-Stor.

The easiest way to set it up initially is to temporary replace your router with this one turn it on and look for EasyAcc_4005DE and log on to it (At this stage it is an open network). Then download the "FTP Manager" and run it to complete the set up. You can then put your router back. If you don't want to do this you have to download the "FTP Manager" on your normal set up and then switch to EasyAcc_4005DE to complete the settings, once you have done this you will not need to do it again.

The next thing I worried about was security as admin and admin are not the most secure names and passwords. The router has quite a range and my neighbour was able to log into it quite easily.

Nothing in the instructions indicate that you can change the security settings, however it is easy, enter the Server Address into the command line of your browser and the home screen opens allowing you to view all the settings and make the changes you want. The most important being to make it secure.

Now it is set up I could use my ipad or android tablet to access a variety of memory devices that are connected to the Wi-Store I tried it with a 32Gb SD card, the maximum it will take, a 64Gb flash drive and a 1TB portable hard drive, all worked perfectly.

This device is a boon if you want to take files that total more than the capacity of the tablet, my little Android tablet is 8Gb with no expansion capability but with this I was able to watch a number of films from the portable HDD.

The other useful thing this does is to work as a back up battery it will supply 5V through a usb socket, to switch the battery on in this mode you need to press the power button for 3 seconds, If you want to know the state of charge press the button briefly and some of the 4 leds will light up one for each 25% of charge.

After playing with this on my tablets I thought I would try it with my laptop. There was no problem whatsoever using it as a wireless router but when I came to transfer files it was more difficult. It is possible to directly transfer using the server address in the command line but it was not the most straightforward way of doing it. I looked for an equivalent of the apps that I used for the Android and iPad although there are many I found that "Free FTP Manager 2.2" worked as well as anything and it is free.

In summary I am not sure if there are any other gadgets like this which allow you to wirelessly expand the memory of tablet devices, share files between tablets, act as a Wireless router and storage battery. It is a very useful addition to anyone who finds the memory in their tablet too limited.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)This is an unusual and multi-faceted device that acts as a wireless router, a power bank, wireless sharing and wireless storage capability. Each one has its own qualities and issues.

The wireless router sets up a network for yourself and up to five other users/partners/devices. Connect the Wi-Fi-routers LAN cord from your wired network to the EasyAcc through the Ethernet port. Set up is typical of any router. The unit has a simple on/off switch on the side for wireless routing with a white symbol that readily appears.

The built-in battery is an 8800mAh Li-Polymer. You can use this for charging Smartphones, Tablets, iPods, iPad, iPhones, etc. via the USB Port. I was able to charge my iPhone 3-1/2 times with one charge. My iPad mini was able to be fully charged once, with about 25% charge left over. The level of charge is set up in (4) four 25% increments. Mine came 50% charged and took about 2 hours to fully charge.

Wireless sharing with this system is great, as you can use it for work or sharing files with friends. It can also be used as a temporary router. I found sharing photos took a few seconds to transfer, but had a lot of difficulty sharing larger files like video files. It just didn't work that well. But, music files were a breeze.

Wi-Fi storage in enabled by inserting an SD Card (max 32gb) into the slot in the side of the device or inserting a Memory Stick (Maximum 64gb) in the slot on the end.

The device only weighs about nine (9) ounces and is 5"X 3" X 1" in size. It's just packed with a lot of options. All of this can be a little daunting if you are not familiar with all these modes. Simply put, you have some great photos on your SD card, by inserting it into the EasyAcc, you can share these with other smartphones, tablets, or on Facebook. When your smartphone or tablet is out of space, instead of deleting any data connect a Flash drive to give yourself instant extra memory. If you are on an airplane or camping where there is no power, you can use the internal battery with its 8800mAh capability for fast recharging. The Wi-stor Wizard can establish a wireless network just by connecting it with a network cable.

When you compare the prices of storage devices, power banks, router and other wireless sharing devices, this little gadget does the trick. Device supplied for an honest review.

Buy [4 In 1] EasyAcc Portable Wifi Wireless SD Card Reader & USB External HDD / SDD / USB Flash Disk Re Now

The Wi-Stor is a jack of all trades, and offers a ton of functionality. If you're looking to reduce the amount of stuff that goes in your laptop bag, travel a lot, or you simply really like tech, this is definitely worth a try! The manufacturer sent me a sample of this device, this review is my honest opinion.

Please excuse the fact that I have written in bullet points there's so much to cover that full sentences would have gotten tiring to read.

SO WHAT CAN IT DO?

Acts as as normal wi-fi router

Charges a portable device's battery with the built-in 5V USB charging port

Add 32GB of hard drive space wirelessly to any device using the SD slot

Acts as a wireless SD card reader (studio photographers take note!)

Add an almost limitless amount of hard drive space wirelessly to any device using the USB port

WHAT I LOVE

The sheer functionality of the thing!

All operations can be run on the internal battery or a USB power cable

That I can add my own hard-drive via USB

Sharing SD photos just got a whole lot easier

Portable router? SO many problems solved

WHAT I WOULD IMPROVE:

Instructions aren't great, if you don't like to tinker this may not be for you

Suggested app is not the most intuitive I think EasyAcc would be wise to hire an app developer

Had some sluggishness with video playback...SD card is rated for 90MB/s and wifi speeds should handle it so I have to assume it's the firmware?

A CF card reader would be SO great, especially for pro photographers who tend to use CF over SD

OVERALL

I took a star off for some polishing that needs done, but this is a solid start to a device with lots of potential. To use an analogy, this is like the Swiss Army Knife of tech gadgets, except the blades of this knife need a little sharpening. With a dedicated app and some firmware improvements for handling large files/video, this would be an easy five stars. For the price, recommended, although for the non technologically-inclined, there may be some frustration in setting the device up.

Lately, I have had the opportunity to evaluate several external power banks. I have also reviewed several small wireless N routers that can be used for travel. However, I have never reviewed a product quite like the EASYACC Wi-Stor. It combines a beefy power bank (8800mAh), with a router, AND it has the capability for file sharing across platforms...including iPhones and iPads.

That is not to say that the EASYACC Wi-Stor has completely unlimited capabilities. In a perfect world you could store dozens of movies, thousands of songs, and millions of pictures on an external drive that you could stream to your iPad. While it will work for pictures I have not been able to stream in other types of media to my iPad. This may limit your movie watching ability, but it still is a powerful tool -especially for business. This is a device that will allow you to arrange all of your PDF and Word files onto a disc that can be accessed remotely but multiple parties. POs, invoices, and other documents can be easily filed and pulled up when needed.

Notes -

Features a 8800mAh power bank. This is enough capacity to fully charge an iPad 2 or charge an iPhone 3-4times. It also gives the EASYACC Wi-stor the ability to work as a file server and router without the need of an external power supply. Make sure that you push (and hold) the power button for 3 seconds before trying to charge any device.

Wireless A/G/N supported router. Having a small wireless router is helpful when you travel. You never know when you are going to come across a hotel room that only has free LAN through ethernet cables. With a small router you can broadcast your own wireless signal. Also, the fact that it can be run off of the power bank means that you can use it as a router in the event of a power outages.

The file sharing requires a SD card, external hard drive, or USB jump drive none-of-which are included.

File sharing is not quite perfect it works great for pdf, word, and jpg but I have not been able to transfer a movie from an SD card back to my iPad. Also, I have been unable to transfer anything from my iPad back to the SD card on the EASYACC. I am attributing this mostly to the restrictiveness of Apple and less as a deficiency on the part of EASYACC.

Remember to change the security settings if you re going to store PO's and invoices using the default username and password will likely leave your files vulnerable.

Requires that you download the free version of FTPManager the app is a bit clumsy, and the directions for setting up the router through FTPManager are not exactly correct, but a little common sense will walk you through the set-up

Charges through a 5V 1A USB port I wish that you had the option to plug it into a 110V wall outlet, but I guess this allows it to more of a global device.

Size it is a bit on the heavy side and it is about 30% larger than a deck of cards, in fact it is roughly the size of an iPhone, but weighs about 20% more

Does not come with a case.

Final VerdictThe EASYACC Wi-Stor is one of the better tablet accessories available to businessmen/women. It allows colleagues to wirelessly share files across platforms. This allows PO's or other sales related documents to be available, with near limitless capacity. You will need to work through your security settings, but the EASYACC Wi-stor is a great blend of file sharing, portable router, and file server. Recommended

4 1/2 Stars

eForCity Hotsync & Charging USB Cable for HP iPAQ

eForCity Hotsync & Charging USB Cable for HP iPAQThe two connectors I had for my iPaq h1945, aka h1940 (one cable for the PC connection, another for charging alone) started messing up (specifically the metal catches on the sides got bent -be careful about this as it can happen with any of these, but it did take some years for it to happen to me.) One started making my PDA produce a buzzing noise if I didn't plug it in just right, which is obviously more than a little bit worrying, so that one is in the trash now since I want my PDA to continue to last for a long time yet. I ordered this because it's the only one not at a ridiculous price. One little oddity though. The part labeled "up" goes down! It took me a little while to figure out why it wasn't going in and just as I got worried it was the wrong thing I tried it the other way and was surprised to see it work.

Pros:

Snug fit probably won't mess up as easily over time assuming it doesn't break the interface in the PDA...

Rolls up into something more convient that the ordinary to carry around.

Universal compatibility with charging systems since it's plain USB (you can buy adapters to plug into a wall or car -in fact, there are systems that can provide power to a USB device via a rechargable battery and this works with those as well as any adapter.)

Great price! Well, actually, it feels to me like it is priced at what its worth, but for some reason the usual price is around $20 or so which is ridiculous for just a charger/sync cable...

Cons:

Cable could be a little longer. I like to leave my PDA charging on a dresser, but I'm going to have to use an extention cord just to do this now.

USB ONLY. You can't plug in the standard charger that comes with the PDA for power. This wouldn't be so bad, but USB only allows up to 500mA per bus. I don't know exactly how much power the PDA uses while running, but it seems to be enough that you don't really get much if any of a charge while plugged into USB whereas the charger provides 2A of power so it easily lets the PDA run purely off of external power AND charge at the same time. But then I'm not entirely certain it can't still do this as the PDA surely can't use all of 500mA or its little 940mAh batter wouldn't last very long at all...

I got this for my iPaq hx2795 and it works good for transferring files. but it needs activesync and it doesn't charge. it is the same speed as the dock that came with the Pocket PC. the main advantage over the dock is it is more portable, it is 3 feet long. I was hoping that it could be used without activesync but you can't, and that it was faster then the dock but it's not, and that it will charge my PPC but it doesn't.

The cable works fine, and the price is excellent. The only reason I did not give this a 5th star is that I ordered 15 of these and they each arrived 3 ft -not the 5 ft as detailed in the technical specifications. Since our field sales people will be using these for customer presentations, the extra 2 ft would have been really helpful. But, we are in a time crunch and need to work with what we have in hand. Overall, this is a decent cable at a great price.

I can't say I hate it or I love it because it did not work at all and the reason why could have been that the unit being charged had malfunctioned. I don't know if the cable was the problem. Other than that the price and delivery was very good.

BoxWave HP iPAQ 111 Classic Handheld AluArmor Jacket - Rugged, Heavy Duty Anodized Aluminum Metal C

BoxWave HP iPAQ 111 Classic Handheld AluArmor Jacket - Rugged, Heavy Duty Anodized Aluminum Metal Case for Slim and Durable Protection - HP iPAQ 111 Classic Handheld Cases and CoversCall me paranoid but I always get a hard case to go with my PDA. So I was very happy to see that somebody came up with a hard case to go with my HP iPAQ 111 Classic. This one is a beauty. I went with the black aluminium case instead of the silver colored one. A nice feature is the clear plastic window in the case's front lidall you have to do is pull out the case, turn it on,read your next appointment on the 111's display, power off, and put it back in your shirt pocket. Quick, easy, efficient. Of course, you might want to consider getting a screen protector for it as well as for your 111the case's window will be prone to scratches since it faces the world. The only annoying part of this case's design for me is the placement of the hinge. The hinge is on the right side of the unit. Which means that the case opens like a book you open from the back cover instead of the more logical and intuitive way you normally open a book. With the case cover open, the lid obstructs access to the power switch, reset button, and the voice recorder button. If the case opened in a more conventional manner, it would only obstruct the SD card slot. I don't know about you, but I use the power switch and the recorder button more often than I fiddle with SD cards. Being right handed, I can't even use the open cover as a tray to hold a note or business card as I enter it in my 111 because my hand obstructs the view while I'm writing. So in my opinion, the case design is optimized for lefties and has a minor operational annoyance for righties. Being a rightie, therefore, I'm deducting one star because all in all, it's still a good accessory for the 111.

Update: Deducting two stars. I dropped the caseit fell from my pocket about 3 1/2 ft. to the ground. The case popped open and my iPaq popped out of the case when it hit the sidewalk. Luckily, my iPaq still works and the only cosmetic damage is a scratch on the screen protector (easily replaced) and a couple of scratches on the body. But a case that pops open and allows the device to fall out after a short fall is NOT a good case, in my opinion. It should have stayed closed. So now I'm rating it as a two-star device although Amazon won't let me change the rating. A pity, because otherwise, it had the potential of being a great case.

This is a nice little case -sleek and form-fitted. However, as someone else posted, the device can and will fall out if dropped.

On the issue of the hinge -I too thought this was a shortcoming until I flipped it upside down to see how that might work with the hinge on the other side. IF you are right handed, holding the unit in your left hand, if the door opens the other way, your thumb will close the door, or not be able to "hold" the unit, leaving it resting on your hand, and prone to slipping. With the case hinged the way it is (backward to a book) your thumb can easily hold the unit secure, while the door is open and resting against your fingers.

Summary: Nice case, if not ultimately fall-proof.

These covers have saved my PDA from an early demise so many times. I use my PDA constantly and I've really abused these covers since I have trouble with my grip. I've dropped them, stepped on them, shoved them in my purse next to my keys, and they really do their job. The only reason I retired the first two was the accumulation of scratches on the windows finally made it too difficult to read the screen on the PDA my fault, not theirs. I had no problem ordering another two.

Anything that goes into my purse is going to be put in harm's way. This case is durable, and protects the right places. I've even dropped it on a hard concrete floor, with no damage. It takes a conscious act to open the door (which is good in my opinion), but does require two hands, so the open area at the bottom to just "refresh" the screen is invaluable. Good product.

I was a little leery at first but after using it for about 6 months, I'm impressed.

I use my PDA every day.

The 'clasp' portion still snaps closed, the plastic lens is still translucent enough to read through and my charging cable can be attached without moving/removing anything.

It's metal and I personally like that.

I would definitely recommend this case!

HP Wireless Mini Keyboard

HP Wireless Mini KeyboardI picked this keyboard up at Fry's for about 40$. It was a bit of an impulse buy since I already own the HP Wireless Elite Keyboard that has served me quite well for the last few months. I was just looking for something smaller for my desktop computer, and smaller this keyboard certainly is. The layout of the keys themselves are very compact and are actually smaller than the keyboard of my laptop(I believe it would be comparable the size of a netbook's keyboard). The keyboard itself a little wider than a sheet of paper folded length wise. The build quality is nice as far as I can tell with no noticeable blemishes. The ability to move the cursor on screen using "Optical Finger Navigation" is interesting. I wasn't even aware of this feature until I picked it up at the store.

I have found that the features of this keyboard might not really serve a person on a desktop well. For instance, the F# buttons can only be used while holding down the "fn" button in favor of having media buttons on the top row. Also, the finger navigation, while it can be convenient, is too unwieldy for use at all times and a mouse would always be preferable to this feature. Cumbersome would be the best way to describe the feeling of using it. I also dislike how the "left click" equivalent is on the top left corner and the finger sensor is on the top right. That forces the use of two hands instead of the one it takes with a standard mouse, which makes it a bit impractical for a desktop user to take advantage of this the finger navigator. These features lead me to conclude that this keyboard would best serve somebody on a home theater type PC or substitute a laptop's keyboard, which is why I'm awarding it a 4 instead of a 3. Also, coming with 2 Duracell batteries doesn't hurt either.

Update 12/4/10

I've been using this as my primary keyboard for atleast a month now and am fairly content with it. I like to maximize the room on my physical desk so being able to move the mouse pointer around without having a mouse on the desk can be nice. However, the media keys have become extremely annoying to the point where I actually pried out F1-F4. I got quite pestered with the accidental presses of F3 during games of starcraft2 and left4dead2 in which my computer would go to sleep mode. By F3, I really mean the sleep button since F3 can only be accessed by holding the "fn" key. Despite the missing keys, the sensors under them are still usable with a more concentrated prod of the finger. BE CAREFUL should the decision be made to make such a modification. As for the finger navigation, it is still a bit cumbersome; however, it isn't too terrible to use after getting used to it.

Let me start with the things I like about this keyboard. The form-factor and design are flat-out brilliant. Seriously gorgeous to look at, and it looks terrific sitting next to my media center. I bought this for use with my Dell Studio Hybrid 140G media center PC (also a brilliant design), and for occassional use it's tolerable when browsing the internet or installing a media center extension from the comfort of your sofa.

But there a so many problems with this keyboard I really can't recommend it.

o It randomly locks up from time to time, even under light to moderate use. No idea why. I'll be right in the middle of typing something or moving the mouse and it'll just die. No power switch on this puppy, so you have to flip it over, pop out one of the batteries, let it sit for a couple of seconds, then put the battery back in to get your keyboard / mouse back.

o The wireless timeout for the keyboard is set WAY, WAY, *WAY* too low, and as far as I can tell there isn't any way to adjust it. The keyboard automatically shuts itself off -and no, I'm not kidding about this -HALF A SECOND after your last keypress. Same goes for the mouse. Half a second delay in your movement, and it has to "wake up" before your mouse cursor starts moving on the screen again. I cannot BEGIN to tell you how REALLY ANNOYING it is to have to constantly retype something because the keyboard wasn't paying attention. It's not distance from the system, it's not batteries, it's not interference. It's just a really bad decision on HP's part (pathetic attempt to extend the battery life, I guess) and an even worse decision to not provide a way to adjust it.

o This keyboard should have been using Bluetooth instead of wireless. Bluetooth would've worked a LOT better, IMO. Dunno why they decided to go this route. (*shrug*).

It was cheap enough ($30 at Fry's) and works well enough for very limited usage, but it's certainly not a day-to-day keyboard or a keyboard for the easily (or not-so-easily) frustrated. Maybe they'll get the bugs worked out eventually...

Hello fellow couch potato surfers! I've been using various wireless keyboard/mouse combos to control my HTPC over the last 5 years, but none has been better than the HP Wireless Mini Keyboard (which I am using to type this review) that I picked up at Staples last month. This was an impulse purchase and I paid full retail for it, but it can be found on the net for under $40.

My last HTPC input device, the former champion of couch surfing, was the Logitech diNovo, an aggravating clamshell design with too-small keys, a crummy finger trackpad, and lackluster battery life (thanks to the keyboard backlighting). HP's Mini has none of these problems. By comparison, the HP Wireless Mini Keyboard can be had for 1/2 to 1/3 the price, and is a better device overall. It's so good that I've been writing reviews about the HP Mini across the net, something I've never done before!

This keyboard definitely comes packed with great features for the price. It is about the size of a netbook keyboard, stylish in a minimalist way, and fairly thin yet sturdy and well made. It's just right for on-top-of-your-lap typing. The keys have a nice feel to them and respond well to key presses. The built in optical finger navigation works very well given the size of the input surface and the high resolution of my TV (1920x1080). The keyboard uses two AA batteries and battery life has been excellent so far, a fact that is no doubt helped along by the lack of backlighting and LED toggle indicators.

On the down side, the lack of backlighting could be a problem in low light situations, and the lack of LED indicators makes it impossible to tell if a toggle key, such as Caps Lock, is engaged without actually typing. The function keys (F1 F12) are activated by holding down the 'fn' key first and then tapping the desired function key, and there is no way for the 'fn' key to act as a toggle key (which would have been my design choice), rather than a shift modifier key. The default, unshifted mode of the function key row is to facilitate multimedia access, which is problematic in the cases of F2 and F3, as they are sleep and account lock keys, respectively. Hitting either of these keys accidentally can be bothersome, and I have read of some people physically removing the keys to avoid the problem altogether. I also had to use an extension cable to position the keyboard's USB micro receiver within line of sight, as the signal was intermittent when it was plugged into the back of my HTPC (a Shuttle SH55J2). This might have been avoided if HP had used Bluetooth instead of its own proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol.

One last gripe I have read about, although it is not mine, is that the optical finger sensor doubles as the right-mouse button, with a separate left-mouse-only button on the left side of the keyboard. Some complain about this arrangement, and the fact that there isn't a toggle on the keyboard to reverse the mouse button assignments. I would counter with two points: 1) any OS I've ever used allows for mouse button swapping; and 2) dragging is very difficult to perform if you are depressing the sensor that also tracks movement. To be thorough, I tried swapping the buttons in Windows for about an hour to make sure I wasn't missing something... and I wasn't. It was aggravating to use the sensor with mouse buttons swapped, and I was more than happy to go back to the way HP's designers intended it to be used.

PROS: Great Design, Quality Construction, Energy Efficient, Simple Setup, wireless, Cheap price good quality, Responsive Input

CONS: No Function-key Toggle, A Few Poorly Placed Keys, No Backlight, No Toggle LEDs, Wireless Needs Line-of-sight

The Bottom Line: The HP Wireless Mini Keyboard is an excellent input device for HTPC usage that works better than more costly devices. Despite flaws, I have given it top marks for being best in the HTPC input class. Highly recommended.

I actually had an older model, the WX415AA. If y'all search for it, it uses the track ball on the right side and left/right click buttons on the left. It worked fairly well, I never had sticky problems with the track ball, but the built in mouse was useless for drag-and-drop to the point that you couldn't shift open windows on your desktop, it kept interpreting the long hold as a double-click. I feel like the new technology is a great improvement.

I'm a little wary of this new keyboard, though two weeks in it is working just as well as my first.

I'm used to working on a netbook and this keyboard continued my comfort with the smaller keyboard, although it fixed that nasty netbook problem of having the shift key on the other side of the up button. The keyboard itself is a solid build with neat keys and the newer keyboard design that protects from dust and drink spills. The multimedia buttons are fantastic for a home theatre -I can use the simple multimedia buttons rather than the on-screen functions which come in handy when you're in a pinch to adjust really loud action scenes or use iTunes in the background without having to access the iTunes window to change a song/pause/etc. The sleep and lock keys are present on my older keyboard as well (used it for a year) and I never found myself accidentally hitting the keys. I would have liked to see the keyboard backlit, especially for night use, but you get used to where the buttons are after a while.

The connection between the keyboard and the laptop is working great... but my first one did that too in its baby days. With the first keyboard, I found if I set it down "too hard," meaning like you'd set down anything else, it would lose the connection to the receiver. I would have to turn the keyboard off and on again to restart the connection. I'm thinking this might have been a personal problem, my keyboard's wiring was pretty faulty from the beginning, but I'm still thinking it could happen to this one as the construction looks pretty much the same.

Some people have complained about the "power saving" function of the keyboard but I'm really excited about it. The earlier version didn't have that, so if I forgot to turn it off... it'd eat up the two AAA (yes, not AA) batteries in a day and a half pretty much. That's also how the death of my older model happened. I was watching TV, turned it off to conserve power, and an hour later flipped it on again and... nothing. No happy blinky blue light, no mouse movement, nothing. I tried replacing the batteries, still nothing. I realized that the "intestines" weren't solidly connected and over time (a year) had grown worn out and loose and finally became so disconnected that my keyboard essentially "broke." I have hopes for this keyboard, but I'm still worried about how long it will really last.

Finally, using this little guy is very efficient. It's small enough not to be too bulky and silly when you're trying to surf using your TV. Having a keyboard AND mouse together means you'll never lose one (still haven't found a few mice yet...) and switching between typing and using a mouse is only a momentary shift. After a year, and an older model that wasn't quite reliable, I still purchased the new one because the functionality of this keyboard is perfect. I've been looking for others like this and there's nothing out (as of this post) that really competes with the progressive design. If you're used to a netbook sized keyboard, you'll find that this is more convenient than a larger wireless keyboard.

My original reason to purchase this keyboard wasn't so I could super-size my monitor, but because I needed something small and convenient I could use at work. I have relatively small hands and enjoyed using a netbook because the keyboard fit better, the built-in mouse was a sweet little bonus feature. At my desk, I could maximize my space by tossing (mind you, gently laying down) the keyboard into a drawer without disrupting a typical drawer setup. My favorite bit was not worrying about enough space to move a mouse around, I was able to sit back comfortably without being that weirdo who uses the laser-mouse on her leg. I accidentally brought the keyboard home and realized that it was also perfect for use with a laptop-TV setup.

I'll keep replacing my mini keyboards until HP creates the perfect one -or until someone else decides to get in the game.

I purchased the HP Wireless Mini Keyboard because I was looking for a wireless keyboard with no number pad and a small footprint. At first I was relatively pleased with the keyboard except for the occasional repeats which were not due to my typing. However, after about 2 months the keyboard's wireless connection to the computer became flaky and within a couple days stopped working altogether.

I called HP support and after being passed around among 6 different people on at least two different continents for about 1 hour, I finally did end up with a very helpful support tech. He had a replacement keyboard shipped overnight. The second keyboard worked OK for about a month, but still a problem with key repeats and then it's wireless connection completely quit working as well. I have not had the time yet to call HP and get passed around again, but definitely would recommend against this keyboard.

The computer on which it was being used was a Dell Precision laptop and I've had a Logitech Unifying wireless mouse dongle in the same USB slots for about 6 months now so I do not think the issue is with the computer. Also, the HP keyboard is locked to it's wireless dongle so it is not even possible just to get a replacement dongle, you have to get a complete replacement keyboard.

BoxWave Slimline Capacitive Stylus for Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Touch Screen Stylus w/ Thinner Barrel and Finer PointThis stylus is good, but sometimes you have to press harder than a fatter stylus. It works for basic input, but not so well for use with SketchPad Pro.

I received my stylus in a timely manner and packaged nicely.

I am happy with the product and use it for my ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. It doesn't work well with Sketching programs, but for touch screen applications in general, it's great. I would definitely purchase from this seller again.

But their limited control means they're not really the first choice of cinematographers.

ND-100S: GlobalSat ND-100S USB GPS Receiver

ND-100S: GlobalSat ND-100S USB GPS ReceiverQuite sensitive maintains a fix indoors in places where we've not gotten any handheld dedicated GPS units to keep a fix.

Works out-of-box with Ubuntu, though the kernel puts it at /dev/gps0 instead of the more common /dev/ttyUSB0.

Under Windows XP, it keeps coming up as "Microsoft serial Ballpoint", and the GPS NMEA data coming from it gets interpreted as mouse movements and button clicks. The fix (although not easy to accomplish with mouse moving on its own...) is to open up Device Manager, and just after plugging in the GPS when the ballpoint device first appears in Device Manager, right-click it and select 'Disable'. Doing this over remote desktop or VNC is tons easier as you can keep the mouse cursor in one place... GlobalSat has newer Windows drivers, one explicitly saying it's for the ballpoint problem, but the only way I could fix it was to disable the ballpoint in device manager.

I installed this device on a tablet running Windows 7. I downloaded the Windows 7 driver from Globalsat's .tw website because I couldn't get the driver on the provided CD (XP and Vista only) to work with Globalsats GPS utility (Mini-whatever). I never did get the GPS utility to work, but after a couple of hours of frustration, I downloaded MS Streets & Trips (trial version), and the device connected flawlessly. During my attempts to use the GPS utility, I did the firmware upgrade, but I'm not sure that I needed that.

The device is very sensitive. Even indoors, it picks up signals from 7 or 8 satellites. In that respect, it seems to be much more sensitive than a hand-held GPS I bought a couple years ago (and have since ruined).

The instruction manual (on-line only) is poorly written and out of date. Arguably, following the manual instructions will lead you further astray than if you wing it. Notwithstanding all the flaws, the device a good buy.

About one year later.....

I lost my original and bought a replacement. The only difference I could identify is that the first one was white and the replacement is black. After initial installation, it worked once or twice then quit. I gave up and bought a BU-353. It seems to be working perfectly.

Item works fine and performs perfectly. But...I had to set the baud rate to 4800 to get it to work. I didn't see anything that said to do this first, but a quick google search pulled up the info.

I gave this product 3 stars as the average of the good and the bad. First, the good. I tried it initially on a Linux netbook. After downloading and installing gpsd, the receiver quickly initialized and I could read the stream of NMEA messages.

Now, the bad. After that success, I used the supplied mini-CD to install the drivers on an XP machine. After connecting the device, I opened the COM port with Hyperterm at 4800 baud 8-N-1. The device was putting out a data stream, but the characters were garbage. No baud or parity configurations produced an intelligible stream. Searching the web, I found suggestions to download other software to set the baud rate. This failed to produce good data. With more searching, I found a discussion in the users' forum about reflashing the device, and using yet another version of the driver. This also failed. A further comment suggested installing the unified driver, which finally yielded usable data at 4800 baud.

Once the interface was ironed out, the receiver was able to initialize quickly indoors. I have evaluated similar products that functioned just as well but worked with the provided drivers out of the box. While I understand the problem of replacing obsolete media, a prominent notice on the company's homepage would eliminate the installation hassles and improve the user experience greatly.

OK, here's the deal. I bought this to get a portable GPS that I could play with on my laptop. I recieved it, spent an hour trying to figure out how it worked (because on windows it masqueraded as a serial mouse, had to edit the registry to make it work, which was inconvenient, and on linux it was as convoluted a process as these things usually are#. It worked ok for a few hours #accuracy wasn't great, ~20m).

Then it stopped working.

I did what was suggested in the forums, and on the FAQs. No good. I contacted support, and they had me do all those things again. Now I have to pay for shipping to send it back, and because it was purchased through Amazon, they may not replace it. And the return instructions say:

"--All products deemed Out-of Warranty are subject to a minimum $35.00 USD charge, excluding freight.

--You may be subject to a $15 service fee and return shipping costs on items found not to be defective."

So it could double the cost of the thing.

NOT recommended.

Handheld Wired Trackball Mice Mouse for Left /Right Handed Users--Can Greatly Ease the Harm of Palm

Handheld Wired Trackball Mice Mouse for Left /Right Handed Users--Can Greatly Ease the Harm of Palm Joint or Muscle for Long Time Using MouseIf you like this sort of thing. I know some people hate 'em but I love it and it's the only mouse I'd ever use. This is my first one of the new generation with the scroll wheel and it's a huge improvement over the earlier ones. The larger size is easier and more comfortable to hold, the optical ball action is more consistent (and hopefully longer lasting) than the roller type, and the flat bottom design means it can stand up and be used like a desktop trackball when you're typing. The only problem I have with it is that the driver seems to have some kind of conflict with Windows 7. I have to unplug it before turning the computer on or Windows won't boot. So, not perfect yet, but almost there.
