Sony CLIE PEG-NR70V Handheld PDA

Sony CLIE PEG-NR70V Handheld PDAI agree with many of the reviews (buttons poorly placed, keyboard arguably not faster than Graffiti, excellent screen color, etc.), and love the device in general; but would like to give you more info about the camera to help choose between the V and non-V models. I have owned a 3.2 megapixel digital camera, and the Handspring expansion Eyemodule camera for comparison. The CLIE camera takes descent color photos. They appear particularly nicely on the small PDA screen, and can easily take photos in good light (mandatory, no flash), especially of close objects (within 5-6 feet). Great for quick photos of people (can even take mini size and attach to address files!), kids, etc. At a distance, slightly grainy for sure, but I have photographed my house, my car, and even my flagpole with good success. Again, bright light is required for a good shot. Can take MANY shots without wearing down the battery (exactly how many i do not know, but would guess dozens and dozens), and they are all thumbnailed in tiny size in the PDA program to allow access, review. Can import/export to Memory Stick, and I have a 128MB Memory STick in the slot [price] and can store hundreds of color photos. Uses: I have a friend househunting who uses his to take photos of each home. Take car wreck damage photos, take people you meet at a bar photos, take road sign photos for directions, a quickpic for on-line sales, covertly snap people you work with to show the spouse ("this is Jennie that I work with...see, she ain;t so cute"), etc. The fact that you have the camera all the time is a major plus! Can change effects, can take B/W pics, can change lighting sensitivity, can even do some (useless) fun picture effects (solar, negatives, etc.). All photos can be modified on the CLIE with PaintWorks (included) right on the CLIE to add funny gestures, change some colors, and such (but does not crop, enlarge etc.) Negative: unlike my Eyemodule Handspring that can hotsync the images to a PC, Sony has decided to make us buy a Memory Stick and Reader/Writer ([price]; the knock-off reader only is [price]) to get the photos from CLIE, to Stick, to PC. Once on the PC can modify with any software program you use, as these are JPEG images. Can email, print hard copy and the like. The Sony Memory Stick reader/writer is also very helpful, but I do not beleive required, to get your CD collection on Memory Stick MP3s for CLIE listening. So, bottom line, you will be spending another [price] dollars beyond the PDA price to get a large size Memory stick and the reader, count on it. I personally use the camera every few days, which is more than I can say for my digicam that I never seem to have when I need it. For the extra [price] bucks, the camera, in my humble opinion, is very worthwhile. Happy shooting!

Once, years ago, I had proclaimed, "I could never use a PDA; I'd always be worried about running out of batteries or losing the information. Good old paper organizers are enough for me." That was then. A while later, while sorting through all my Post-It notes and hand "archiving" them into the back pocket of my fabric organizer, I decided to look into PDAs. Couldn't I keep a typed list of things to do without straining for hours to decipher my hasty handwriting on yellow bits of paper? Wouldn't it be nice to put an organizer that weighed a few ounces into my bag instead of the one I had which was quickly reaching the weight of a brick? Being a student, I wanted something reliable that also scored exceptionally well in the "coolness" section. My first inclination was to go with a Palm Pilot after all, they're everywhere, right? Palm this, Palm that. Celebrities swear by them according to a few magazines, ads show off shiny new models all the time, and "Palm Pilot" seems to have become synonymous with the word "PDA." That's it, I had decided. I'm going with a Palm m100 or m105 (a decision purely determined by price); the next day, I said, "That's it, I'm going with the Handspring Visor (the decision purely determined by the cool case colors).

Little did I know that seeing a PDA on the web is very different from seeing a PDA in person. Like supermodels and magazine covers, most photos of PDAs seem to go through this "retouching" phase thanks to Adobe. When I saw the Palms, I was immediately disappointed; the screens were barely visible to me. When I saw the Handsprings, I was again disappointed; the supposedly vibrant "colors" turned out to be rather dull and unimpressive. After asking others for their opinions, I was told that the Sony Clié was the best way to go. The Sony what? I had never even heard that Sony was in the PDA business. A sales guy showed me the Sony Cliés it was instant love. I first purchased the Sony T-615, a perfectly competent model that did everything I hoped it would; until, that is, the NR-70V came out. As someone who loves the latest and greatest, I traded it in for the newest model. A built-in keyboard? Better resolution? A camera? I was sold! Of course, there were those who jealously defended their Palm Pilots, insisting that Palms were the best in this and that, that Sonys can't even touch what they had. Well, I was already taken by the Sony. I now laugh that I went from the... 150 m100 or m105 to the... NR-70V. What a leap!

I had just returned from a summer vacation to Thailand. I always use a vacation as a diagnostic test on how effective an electronic device is. Why? Because while at home I am gingerly handling the device, careful not to scratch it, afraid of wasting the batteries, terrified of using it too much; while on vacation, however, thrown into, ironically, hectic situations (handling airline schedules, quickly converting currencies in line at the store, checking world times before flights, bringing up dictionaries to haggle with store owners), I am forced to break out the device to apply it to life situations. In Thailand, the PDA never left my side. Carefully protected in its Brando leather case, I used it for everything (see parentheses above). I even took pictures with it. Be careful to note, however, that the camera on this device is not top quality; they're pictures you take for fun, not ones you take to print out brilliant photos later. So, if you do want to take digital pictures on vacation, be sure to bring a capable camera. However, there's great value in having a camera with you all the time. The camera is great for taking quick photos when you don't have the time to whip out your digital camera (or even when you forget to bring it). "I wish I had a camera with me!" Well, now you do.

A variety of programs can also make your NR-70V even more useful. BugMe! is a program that is designed like Post-It notes (you know, the pieces of paper I used to have all over the place pre-PDA); you just tap the icon on your device, bring up a new "sheet," and use your stylus to write right on the screen in your own handwriting. A great program for those who don't want to use Graffiti or type on the cumbersome mini-keyboard. Another program called Energy Dimmer is great for automatically dimming the backlight of your PDA after a number of seconds. If you are going to use this PDA for typing up notes, keeping the backlight on will drain the batteries quickly (along with using intensive programs such as games). Download this program so it will dim when it is idle, thus saving you batteries and the trouble of turning the device on and off every few minutes.

After visiting three airports, countless stores and restaurants, and many scenic sights, I have to say that this is the best PDA on the market. There are several good reviews out there that contain more technical jargon than I've provided here; I just hope this review has been helpful for those seeking a more "day-to-day" review. Some more specific points and tips to help you decide:

* The button placements are not ideal. They are awkward, requiring one to reach in and push into the heart of the PDA.

* The built-in keyboard is not very user friendly. The buttons are small; not much of a relief from using the Graffiti. It is a pain to capitalize and use numbers. I recommend getting the newly released PEGA-KB11 keyboard. It's a fold-out and full-sized keyboard that allows you to type as though you are on a laptop.

* If you want to use the camera instead of a digital camera (meaning these are just fun photos, not to be printed at great quality), use it with plenty of light, as there is no flash included. I took photos of some people in my tour group one in a dark restaurant, the other in a bright restaurant the difference is great. You can take pictures of people with this and insert the thumbnail photo in your address book.

* The MP3 player, in my opinion, is not very useful. First of all, you need a special white memory stick (different from the blue ones) to store the files. The price can add up. The design of this PDA is also a bit bizarre, so it's not really convenient to use it as a music player.

* The screen resolution is the best on the market right now. Some PDA screens will become almost unreadable with the backlight off; the Sony is still readable (with some reasonable ambient light) without the backlight.

* Be sure you can live with the clamshell design. Many people find this design awkward and unnecessary. Personally, I think it gives the PDA a "mini laptop" feel and plenty of versatility. You can sit it open like a laptop, flip the screen over like a spiral notebook, et cetera.

* If you don't want to use the cradle to charge or hotsync, purchase a cable that'll allow you to charge and hotsync via your computer (using the USB slot).

In conclusion, the Sony Clié NR-70V is a great buy if you know it'll be compatible with your needs. It is always with me, and many programs and add-ons can enhance the experience. This is your all-in-one device: an organizer, a camera, a currency converter, a laptop, a photo gallery, a subway map, your international watch, a music player, a remote control, a movie player, etc. After having this for a few months, I can't believe I ever preferred a paper organizer over this. This is definitely everything you want it to be.

I was looking for a new PDA to replace my outdated, stuffed-to-the-brim, b&w handheld. When I just happened on Sony's site and saw the PEG-NR70V Bam! Love at first sight!

The clamshell design is wonderfully different and the hi-res color, 180 degree rotating screen will make you the envy of everyone in the room. Games, pictures and even movies (!) look marvelous on the large crystal-clear display.

Those "gee, I wish I had a camera on me" moments will be no more. The built in camera takes decent pics on the fly. You can even edit them with the CliePaint app.

The 66mhz Processor makes your apps fly and the more the merrier with the 16mb of internal memory. Considering that the Clie also supports Memory Stick expansion, you'll always have room for that must-have application, or your collection of MP3s. Listen to musuc on the train as you read your synched morning newspaper with the AudioPlayer software and included earphones with remote!

If you must have the latest and greatest, then the Clie NR70v is definately for you. I've had no problems with mine and love the stares!

This PDA kicks [rear]! I've been waiting for about a year to replace my Palm V and saw this model at a party and had to have it. Sony has sone a great job coming up with ways to make the platform better that I would never have thought of. Example: when you write on the grafitti area, the Clie traces your stroke, to show you briefly what you've written, so that if you're consistantly writing a letter wrong, you'll see why. Don't like grafitti? No problem. The integrated keyboard is as easy to use as a blackberry or any of the small attachable keyboards currently available. The screen is bright and sharp, the mp3 sound is as good as my mp3 player, and the photo and video is sharp as well. The third-party software is easy to install fun, and easy to use as well. It uses the same Palm desktop as my old PalmV and so I was able to transfer all my old data with no sweat.

The memory stick works just like an external drive when the unit is in its cradle, so it's a snap to transfer files, music, pictures back and forth from my PC. You don't even have to hotsync.

The camera is actually useful, although it has no flash or adjustable shutter.

If I have any complaints it's that it doesn't go as long on a single charge as my Palm did, but then, my old Palm didn't have an MP3 player and camera running down the battery, and, to be really petty, the stylus is very thin and not as comfortable to hold as the Palm's. I'm not usually one to jump on the first new technology as soon as it hits, but this is just too cool not to have.

OK, so I'm one of those gadget guys that has to go out and always buy the latest everything...and much to my wife's dismay, spend a lot of money in the process. As far as PDA's go, I have been from the Palm (m505), to Pocket PC (Ipaq) and now I'm back to the Palm again with the Sony Clie. Always looking for new features, I have been attracted to different PDA's for different features...and of course, the industry cannot come out with one single unit that does everything because that would hurt their bottom line, so I have been forced to buy several different types of PDA's.

The Sony Clie does not disappoint when it comes to features and overall aesthetics/appearance. Sony is the first that I've seen to realize that it's a smart idea to include the "case" as a feature of the unit itself. If you want to purchase a leather case to protect your unit even further, you can definitely do so, but the design of the NR70V has a nice titanium looking hard case on the outside of the unit which protects itself. No need to carry the bulky pocket-book looking leather cases.

This isn't a review that will list every feature of the unit because you can get that by just visiting the Sony web site ... Instead, I'll highlight some of the good and bad features for you so that you can make an informed decision.

First of all, as of the date of this review (6/11/2002), the price of the unit was still in the high [$$$] range, which is an extremely high price for a PDA. Waiting a few months, you may find the price will drop a couple hundred bucks and let you pocket that hard earned money.

The digital camera that comes with the unit is nothing more than a novelty. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you'll use this to take pictures at your next social function or Holiday party. The resolution is horrible, but with that said, you are buying a PDA folks. Despite Sony's attempts to promote this unit as an all-in-one "Personal Entertainment Organizer", it is still a PDA. Which means that you shouldn't expect a 4 mega-pixel camera. The camera should be used in its context, which for example may include taking a picture of a book in a bookstore that you want to make sure you read in the future, or a picture of the CD in the music store that you want your wife or parents to buy you for your birthday. Bottom line on the camera is don't set your expectations too high and you won't be disappointed. It might be cool at first, but should not be a deciding factor in your purchase decision.

The music player feature is great. You can play mp3's and use your PDA just like a walkman. The thing to watch our for here is that unfortunately Sony does not include a memory stick with this unit, despite its price (not even a 4MB stick to get you started!!), which I found extremely annoying. If you're going to play more than a few songs at a time, you'll need to invest in at least a 128MB memory stick which will run you upwards of [$$$] depending on where you buy it (cheapest place I found was by using the shopping comparison on Yahoo!).

The screen that the Sony comes with is superb to any that I have seen. The resolution is great, pictures show up clear, and movies are also pretty good. (this technology has a long way to go, but Sony is still at the top of the list).

Having experiences the ease of use of the PocketPC, I find several features of the Palm OS, and in turn, the Sony Clie, extremely frustrating. For example, there is no software that allows you to see all files that you have saved on your unit in one screen, and allow you to open/delete/change or beam them. The unit comes with MS Gate which is a program that attempts to do this, but unfortunately is extremely lacking. The features I found most annoying is that it lists ALL files, including system files that you don't care about, and it also will not let you open any of the files from this program. In contrast, the PocketPC lets you simply use something just like the Explorer included with Windows (as a general comment, if you are used to Windows and do not want to deter from it, go with a PocketPC and stay away from Palm).

The QWERTY keyboard is a great feature of the unit. It makes entering everything much easier, and for those of you that find Graffiti frustrating, this is your savior.

For some reason, the people that designed this unit put the audio speaker on the bottom of the unit in the exact place that your hand goes when you're holding it. This muffles any sound that comes out, and seems like poor design....just my humble opinion.

The size of the unit is great. It's nice and slim and rivals the M500 and Palm V series. Something frustrating to note hear is that the screen is a good size, but unfortunately you cannot always use its full length. Only certain applications that have been specifically designed for the full screen will let you take FULL advantage of it.

Well...have I said enough?? Overall, I think the Sony Clie NR70V is a step above the rest and Sony has made a good and pioneering effort to include several features that you can't find on any other PDA's. The question is, whether or not these features will make you fork out the extra few hundred dollars. For me, the answer was Yes, but being the gadget guy only means that I'll be doing it again with the next model, and the Clie NR70V will be a thing of the past. Spend wisely.

Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)

Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen LaptopI will keep this relatively short-you get what you pay for! For the current listed price there is no other 14" touchscreen on the market at this price point. I have now had this laptop for nearly a week and it is pretty fast. I ordered 4gb of ram along with the computer to upgrade to 8gb total. This makes all the difference and for roughly $25 you can get the most out of this computer with this simple upgrade that a child could install. Backlit keyboard is great and illuminates nicely without blinding you in very dark locations. As for the fit and finish-I personally like it. It really is silky in feel. The computer itself is solidly built and all parts fit well. Also, the speakers on this thing are great for a budget laptop. They get a lot louder than previous laptops I've had and with more body. They really sound the best when the laptop is sitting on a hard surface so they can reflect sound off of it since they are on the bottom. My only issues with this laptop are the wifi and the smallish battery. The wifi disconnects on a regular basis and has to be reset. Three hours on the internet and I will have to reset atleast twice. I will probably just get a nano usb wifi module to fix this situation. That being said, still a great purchase as long as I get 2 years out of this thing.

This is a great laptop and definitely worth the price. I had some issues with the wifi staying connected, but went to Acer's site and downloaded a different driver and now it works perfect! I love the touchscreen! It has everything I need in a computer and very happy with the purchase.

I needed and new computer and figured Windows 8 was the future, but designed for a touch screen, so felt that that would be the way to invest. Spent the afternoon, yes it arrived in 16 hours after order placed, playing and feeling comfortable returning to "start" when I couldn't figure any other way to move on....my friends are frustrated, but without a touch screen computer I can understand the reason.....I highly recommend this computer as it is stylish, speedy and fun to work....so far it has been easy to become familiar with the system.

This computer is fast, sleek, and advanced for a budget price. The only draw back is that the wifi reception can be a little iffy at times. There has been a few times that my wife and I were sitting right next to each other with laptops at work. Her Lenovo had no apparent issues, whereas this Acer would loose signal or have limited internet connection warnings.

Blackberry OEM Black Leather Holster Pouch Case with Swivel Belt Clip for Blackberry 8520 Curve

Blackberry OEM Black Leather Holster Pouch Case with Swivel Belt Clip for Blackberry 8520 CurveI'm giving this item a fairly poor review because it doesn't match the picture. I ordered this because the pictured item is a form fitted case and what I got is the expandable side version of the OEM holster (it's basically an open side holster with stretchy fabric at the sides). It's a fairly sturdy holster as far as that goes, but it's not what I thought I was buying, which I've had before and liked a whole lot better.

Pros: OEM made, leather (?) with contrast stitching, supports magnet sleep, sturdy swivel belt

Cons: belt clip is not removable, bulky when worn on the belt (and no other way to carry it)

Usrobotics Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard

Usrobotics Wireless Bluetooth KeyboardI am using this keyboard with a Macintosh computer. I have had this keyboard for a few weeks, It started out good but I find that the range of it is less than 8 feet, far short of the 30 feet it says on the box. after about 8 feet it starts to malfunction badly. I get repeated letters all over the place and it loses connection quite often. I have tried to get some help from USRobotics but they have been unresponsive to my emails. It does not look like they are interested in my problem at all.

this has stopped being fun.

I paid $29, it's the price of an education I guess.

I'm very happy with the keyboard. It's small, flat, responsive. So few options exist for apple-based keyboards and while one of the many pc keyboards would work, they are entirely undesirable. So I was happy to find and try this one, esp at the price, and after a month, I am still very, very pleased with it. We have small Apple keyboards being used elsewhere in our office, but they are no better than this one.

I've used this 5 days a week at work for the past 3 months, and I haven't had any complaints. Had trouble at first syncing it to my Macbook, but I think it's because I read the directions wrong. It's not very intuitive on how you sync it; you really do have to read. But it's fine if you don't throw away the booklet. Haven't had to change out the batteries yet, but I remember to turn it off every day when I leave work. Not sure how long they'll last if you forget.

TaoTronics TT-MK001 Mini Portable 2.4GHz Wireless Fly Air Mouse Keyboard Remote Control for Mini PC

TaoTronics TT-MK001 Mini Portable 2.4GHz Wireless Fly Air Mouse Keyboard Remote Control for Mini PC Google Android TV Box - Works with any MK 802 Smart TVJust as the title says. I haven't been able to get this to function with a single one of my Android devices, specifically the Matricom Midnight mx2 HTPC, Nexus 10, or Nexus 4. It does, however, work with Windows PC and Raspberry Pi (Linux). Unfortunately for me, I bought this for my Android HTPC, in which case this Fly Air Mouse does absolutely nothing when plugged into the device.

**update**

I have decided to keep this device and use it with my Raspberry Pi Kiosk. I have the Kiosk configured to display Google Calendar. For this end, the TT-MK001 works quite well.

Just plugged it into my windows box and it works great. I think I need to calibrate the sensitivity, but the driver just auto installed. I'm eager to see how it works with my android mini PC if it ever gets here.

The lack of range is really what killed this for me. At 3 ft away the mouse movement was still really choppy.

From 5 ft away it barely worked at all. Buttons would sometimes register as two keypresses so typing was inconsistent. Unusable.

Wish it could have worked out.

The biggest problem I have with this keypad is that several essential keyboard buttons are just not there... so this is definitely not a keyboard replacement for an HTPC. It's more of a keyboard supplement.

The other issue I have is with the mouse control: you press the middle button, which unfreezes the mouse. You then have to press it again to freeze the mouse. While this works, it's not as smooth a process as the Gyration air mouse, which is hold-move-release.

That doesn't mean this is a piece of junk: far from it, I found that this was useful device in its niche. It works acceptably well as an HTPC remote or a presentation remote. For the money, it's definitely a worthwhile purchase.

PalmOne Leather Wallet Case (m500 series)

PalmOne Leather Wallet CaseThe Leather Zippered Case is a must-have for the m500-series owner. Not only is it a very attractive case, but its size is extremely convenient, and its extra features make it a fantastic buy. It incorporates slots for 4 extra expansion cards, as well as credit card slots and an ID card window (inside). Also immensely helpful is the small notepad. It is very easy to slide the PDA out of the case, which is securely held via its left rail. The security of a zipper is not to be done without, especially if you want to keep your Palm free of dirt and debris that can creep into less-enclosed cases. The only thing lacking is a small pen to complement the writing pad, but I personally cured that by purchasing a stylus multi-pen (which is much easier to manage than the m505's included stylus, which fits TOO snuggly in the right rail, and has caused more than one broken nail!). The multi-pen does not fit inside the case, but such a minor issue is not worth lowering my rating of the case.

This is -thecase for the m50x series. Not only does it have plenty of space and slots for SD cards, credit cards, and ID cards, but it has a zippered closure that protects the Palm from lint and dust. Your screen will be less likely to be scratched. It also contains a tiny notepad that attaches to a leather flap. A nice touch, but I would recommend that you just discard the notepad and use the plain leather flap as a buffer between the Palm and the SD and credit cards. You lose a bit of functionality with the loss of the paper, but you gain tons of additional screen protection. When most wallet style cases are closed, the edges of your credit cards are pushed up against the screen. This is bad. This case actually provides the much needed added protection with that leather flap. The Palm is held in by a slide-rail, this allows the Palm to connect to the cradle while still in the case. It is somewhat ackward, but less ackward than taking it out of a case. And to top it off the case is a nice quality leather. If you have a m50x, get this case!

I had (briefly, before I gave it away) a slim leather case for my Vx and wasn't impressed with it. I got this anyway, because there just aren't many cases available for the 500 series yet. I was pleasantly surprised. If you're avoiding it because you're afraid it will be as disappointed as the V series slim leather case, no need. It's all leather, even the bit that attaches to the rail (unlike the Vx series case which was rubber), and the leather is soft and flexible enough that the case front comfortably folds behind the pilot when I'm reading from it. It even fits around my dual action stylus; the tab closure adjusts well to different amounts of stuff in the pockets. It's pretty slim as cases go. It's nice looking. (The new round palm logo is cleaner looking even.) My biggest criticism is that personally, I could do without the padding, since then it would be slimmer still.

Read Best Reviews of PalmOne Leather Wallet Case (m500 series) Here

There are a lot of people at work with PDAs, and they all carry them around in some kind of portfolio-style case. This was not acceptable to me--I wanted a hands-free way of keeping my Palm m505 with me.

This case is the answer. The black leather is stylish and durable. And this case is low profile--I bought the m505 partly because it's so small, and I wanted a case that's small too. The Palm fits real snugly into this case, and the case is narrow so that you're not always banging it into things as you walk around.

The only complaint that kept me from giving it five stars are that I wish Palm built some compartments into the flap cover of the case for carrying extra memory cards. But that's being nit-picky.

This is the best way I've seen of keeping your Palm at your side without having to carry it around with your hands.

Want PalmOne Leather Wallet Case (m500 series) Discount?

I have gone through several cases designed for Palms, from a snug-fitting neoprene case to a large Coach case that held a dozen credit cards and a note pad. This case, however, is the perfect one for me.

The leather is high quality with a tough (hard at first) finish. As you use the case for a few weeks, however, the surface softens a bit. It is great for business use, but if you are hard on your cases, a nylon or metal one might be a better choice.

Inside, the storage is very handy, and designed specifically for a 505 and SD/MMC cards, so the space is very efficiently laid out. I can fit two credit cards in the slots and two in the clear pocket for a total of three credit cards and my driver's license.

There is also a hidden slash pocket for cash. I took the advice of another reviewer and left the note pad out of my case. It is tiny smaller than a normal PostIt note and adds to the bulk of the case. Since the M505 has the notepad function, I figured the paper was redundant anyway.

One reviewer noted that he was expecting a metal zipper, based upon the photograph of the case. The only difference in the picture and the production unit is the metal zipper pull. The production unit has a leather sewn pull. The nylon zipper is actually preferable as a metal zipper could scratch the Palm unit and would most likely be less reliable over time.

The only minor annoyance I found with the case is that the plastic rail that connects the unit to the case is very snug once inserted. To remove the unit for HotSync/charge takes a bit of effort. Be careful of your fingernails. Once Palm actually delivers a travel HotSync cable and travel charger (whomever was in charge of bringing Palm's accessory hardware to market should be sacked) this will not be a problem as you won't need to remove the unit at all.

This issue aside, this is the best case so far for a 505 if size and utility are an issue.

DSLR Rig Shoulder Mount for DV Cameras & All DSLR Cameras, Canon 5D MK II , 7D , 60D ,600D Nikon D90 D7000 D5100 D3100 D300s Sony DSR-PD198p Panasonic AG-HMC153MCI bought this rig for about $150 off eBay a few months ago. I already had a rig (Gini/Magic Spider), but I liked the fact that this rig looked very versatile, and that it could pack up to fit into a small backpack. Unless you're shooting something pretty seriously, it feels kind of silly to walk around in public with a full-sized shoulder rig -for one thing, they look like rocket launchers. I can configure this into a simple handheld unit which is fairly inconspicuous but also offers much-improved stability (especially for dslrs.) If I want more stability, I can change it up into a full shoulder rig.

The build quality is quite good, and it's a very functional little gadget. It's a good balance of portability, functionality, and price.

Amazon Kindle 1 Battery 3.7V, 1530mAh

Amazon Kindle 1 Battery 3.7V, 1530mAhThis battery is not worth the color they used to make it blue. I don't have a lot of time right now to give to doing this but I think I owe it to others who need to buy a battery for their Kindle. I love my Kindle and don't want to upgrade for it is light and easy to use, I can read in bed with it without my arms going to sleep and I don't need all the other stuff that is on the new ones, but when the blue battery ran out after a few months I could only remember the original battery and be teary eyed. I should have buried it with honors. It lasted four years and I read a lot! Then I wondered what to do when I went in and found another battery (not blue) for my specific original Kindle and, with trepidation, ordered it. I could not believe the speed and brightness it brought. So, in response to your wish for a rating, I would NEVER buy a blue battery again if I could help it!!!! G. Steele

While the battery delivery was very good, the battery life was very poor. Maybe 5 hours, but more likely closer to 2. i actually had ordered 2 of them and both performed poorly. The original battery that came with the Kindle was good for at least 30 hours, but these replacements are not even close.

I too own the original Kindlepurchased in Sept. 2008. The original battery lasted an amazing three full years. Unfortunately, the replacement battery barely lasted one year before every download was taking half the power. I am currently charging the battery every day (with sluggish results) as I consider whether it is worth it to buy another replacement battery or move on to a newer product. Had hoped to continue with my old Kindle as all I am interested in is reading bookswithout the other bells and whistlesbut it just might not be worth it as replacement batteries will also become harder to come by.

If this battery last as long as the original battery on my Kindle, I will be more than amazed. I see no reason to buy a new Kindle when this one does what I want. That is to download books for me to read. No problem with that!!! My husband's second generation Kindle is not as durable as my first generation. Sorry about that. I don't think a battery will help him.

DigiPro WP8060 8-Inch x 6-Inch USB Graphics Tablet with Cordless Pen

DigiPro WP8060 8-Inch x 6-Inch USB Graphics Tablet with Cordless PenI have been using this tablet for two years now, which I originally bought on ebay. It is beginning to get worn out and may need replacement, so I'm assuming a 2-3 year average life span on this product because I do use it rather often.

This was the first tablet I ever owned; purchased because of the low price, and it has been just fine for me. I use it on a laptop with Windows XP and Photoshop7 and despite a few quirks and occasional minor glitches it functions just fine. I had no trouble with drivers or software.

In using the product I've discovered a few quirks in working with it.

* Pressure sensitivity only works if the device is plugged in before the program you wish to use is started.

* Cannot start the computer with the device plugged in, must plug in after start up is complete.

* Pressure sensitivity can stop if the tablet is left plugged in but unused for too long, although I have not experienced this for a few months now.

* Recently, occasionally the tablet will stop recognizing the pen while working on something, but a quick tap to the keyboard will fix this. May just be a result of being old.

As this is the only tablet I have ever used I cannot compare it to more expensive brands, but I find that it works just fine for me. I use it exclusively for drawing on Photoshop7. Writing functions in Microsoft Word seem to work, but I have only tried once or twice.

I'll start by saying this tablet is very basic, and if basic is all you need you can't beat the price. Be forewarned, though, the manual included is very ...lackluster & in broken english. Also, good luck with finding a website, manufacturer phone number, or address where you can write to. Don't lose the program disc, or buy one of these that's missing the disc.

I can draw with this tablet in Corel 9, but I don't have any of the pressure sensitivity. I think the instructions try to tell me as much since I'm using XP, but it's hard to tell. No sensitivity with Windows Paint, either. But I know the function does actually work, since I can get sensitivity results in the programs own test-box, but that's it.

I just got this tablet cuz I can't afford a Wacom. I haven't been able to get it to work yet...

**UPDATE I got it working! See update in comments section. I would also give it 4 stars now that I've figured out my driver issues.**

This product is very low quality (which is why they can sell it so cheaply) and from the reviews and forums on other websites, it seems like about half of the units that are shipped are lemons. Many report that it works flawlessly out of the box. In particular people using MacOSX or Windows Vista seem to have a lot of problems but then again some others who use those operating systems said that it works like a charm. It seems to be either 1)problems with the pen not working or 2)crappy driver software. Put that together with almost non-existant customer service (the company is in China) makes it a huge risk to purchase this. I wish I would have saved for a real Wacom. You get what you pay for...

FYI, Here's a description of my own personal issues:

I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.4.11. I've tried both the 1.23 and 1.24 drivers for MacOSX but nothing doesn't work. The weird thing is that it actually responds to the pen and all the lights light up when I put the pen on the tablet or push one of the buttons. But the cursor is always stuck in the lower right corner of the screen and no matter what I do I can't get it to leave that corner. If I use my mouse to move the cursor to the middle of the screen, as soon as I hover the pen over the tablet the cursor moves immediately to the lower right corner.

This is my first ever review, so if this is odd, then that's probably why.

I am VERY pleased with my graphics tablet. It is easy to use, has lots of little shortcuts on it (some of which I don't think have keyboard shortcuts) and looks pretty cool! It's also accurate and, with practice, it's very useful.

Pros:

-Pen is wireless, so there isn't anything getting in the way, and this makes the pen more easy to store.

-It only requires one AAA batery, and with just one battery my pen has lasted for months so far (Still same battery as the one I used when I got it two months ago).

-Very easy to figure out and use

-Comes with a little pen holder, which helps avoid losing the pen.

-Has many shortcuts, a few of which aren't on the keyboard.

-Has a pressure system, so the harder you press, the darker the line (or whatever else the program you're using does)

-light weight

-Easy to figure out

Cons:

-The screen has no lights of any kind, and it is hard to see the buttons unless a light is shining on it just right.

-Not a lot of programs I've seen are compatible with it.

-Looks nothing like the picture (It's black, and the pen holder is attached to it, not a separate piece, not to

mention there's no grid.

-Instruction book isn't very helpful

-Writing system that comes with it is ineffective; you have to have PERFECT handwriting or it can't read what you

write. Not to mention it's impractical.

-When in use, small annoying windows pop up when you can type in something, that just gets in the way.

All in all, this is a GREAT graphics tablet, though it's my first ever graphics tablet and so I can't really compare it to anything. Not to mention this is so CHEAP! I think it is definitely worth the buy!

So yeah, all in all I'd give it a 9/10, but since it's a 5 star system, I gave it 4 stars. If you like to do art, but don't like to buy supplies constantly, or if you like posting art online, this is a MUST! Of course, there are probably better graphics tablets out there, but this one is effective, and is by far the cheapest I've seen.

I am not going to get lengthy with this review. Bottom line, if you know how to use your computer and devices properly, and are a little computer literate this is a great deal for you. If you read the negatives, it is normally people who cannot figure out how to run the software, or people who complain about having to update drivers. NOT the fault of the tablet itself.

That being said, It is a cheaper tablet, but it is useful to me in Adobe Photoshop CS4 suite, and other applications I use it for. It of course, will take getting used to your hand movement versus drawline on screen. It is odd at first, as it is not as simple as a mouse pointer, but it grows on you quickly.

The tablet works well, update the drivers. Pen is fine, make sure you already have windows and your computer on and ready, then plug in the tablet, and open the software you want to use. It only makes sense that you need the computer to recognize the device before adobe or other software will.

Great price, very good value. If you have a hard time figuring out minor computer processes such as plug and play or updating drivers, have someone help you.

GREAT BUY!

Atari Retro (P10934U)

Atari RetroIf you're 30+ years old, you may have fond memories of playing with the Atari 2600 -the home video game system that was popular long before Nintendo, Sega, or even Microsoft were household words. This card takes seven of the games from that old system and puts them...well...in the Palm of your hand. This card is also supposed to work with Pocket PC and certain cell phones, but I've only played it on a Palm Zire 71.

The most important thing to note is what games are included -the "Features" section of the listing on Amazon is incorrect. This card does have Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, and Pong -but instead of Combat and Tempest you get Adventure and Yar's Revenge. The Editorial Review includes the correct combination of games.

So what are the games like? As nearly as I can tell, they're identical to the old console version. In Adventure (one of my old favorites, and the grandparent of games like Legend of Zelda), the screen flickers if you have too many objects on the screen at once, just like it did on our television set years ago. Pong is...well...Pong. The games look, feel, and sound exactly like they used to years ago -I'm not certain, but I suspect they're using the exact same code, running under an emulator.

It's important to note, however, that these are clones of the 2600 version of the games -not the arcade versions that were out at the same time. So Centipede is just a square block, not a little mushroom shooter. Missile Command has one missile silo, not three. But unlike in the arcade, in this version of Asteroids you can choose to play with your choice of special options -hypserspace, shields, flip, or nothing. If you're expecting clones of the arcade, you'll be disappointed -the 2600 had nowhere near the power of the arcade games of its day, and that's reflected in what you'll see here.

I do have a few complaints about this implementation. You can only adjust the volume level before you start a game -if you want to change it in the middle, you have to quit your game and start over. There is a pause option (as there was on the 2600 console), but if you end up back at the application launcher, you'll lose your place in whichever game you were playing. Two of the games included -Pong and Breakout -are almost impossible to play with a joystick (which is why the 2600 had paddle controllers for these games -too bad they couldn't have let you use the stylus to simulate the paddle).

Speaking of controllers, there is no configuration option available -your 5-way navigator is your joystick, but I've accidentally pressed it down when I didn't mean to, and fired at a bad time. Your four application buttons are also fire buttons, though they all do the same thing (the 2600 controller was a single joystick with a single button, so this is just fine). Still, I'd love the freedom to remap buttons if I want, if only to prevent a press on the 5-way navigator from firing unexpectedly.

CONCLUSION

If you grew up playing the Atari 2600, then this will be a trip down memory lane. I spent an hour playing Adventure -I just couldn't put it down, despite pitiful graphics and simplistic gameplay. Nostalgia buffs will love this!

But if you're part of the Nintendo generation, or the old 2600 games hold no special memories for you, then you'll probably be disappointed in this release. Look for modern versions of some of these games from iambic and astraware to really take advantage of the horsepower of your modern platform.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum Laptop (Cobalt Blue)

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum LaptopI own a 2008 non unibody 15" Macbook Pro and I wanted a second laptop for Windows support. This laptop fits my needs.

First of all, I'll list some of the things I didn't like about the laptop -

The screen lid is heavy, so if you tried to lift/open the screen with just one hand the whole laptop lifts up. Thus, to turn on the laptop or wake up from sleep, I have to use two hands.

Lame branding. On the lid, there's the acer logo in the middle which is great, but on the top right there's some logo for SignalUp (acer technology branding) that could have been omitted. It's not a sticker you can remove. Also the speakers have the words Dolby Theater and Professionally Tuned. Good to know a professional tuned the speakers, but it distracts from the overall aesthetics of the laptop.

Not a backlit keyboard. Not a deal breaker but nice to have, considering it's just a $20 add-on on Dell laptops.

Glossy screen. Not a big fan, and the viewing angles aren't as a good as a current Macbook Pro.

Bloatware, yeah it's there and it's annoying. Took a while to uninstall.

No light to indicate camera is on. It's trivial, but how would I know someone isn't secretly taping me?

Positives +

+ The trackpad on Macs are superior but I was surprised to find the trackpad on this Acer to work pretty well. Two finger scroll is mainly what I love and used to. It also supports Chrome two finger scroll horizontally to go back/forward. The downside is that trackpad area is fairly tiny and at times I would accidentally make a pinching gesture and it would increase/decrease the font on the website I'm on.

+ USB 3.0 and HDMI input. Currently, no Apple laptop supports USB 3.0 and to get HDMI out you have to buy and carry around a dongle.

+ Looks fairly good, seems solidly built 4lbs, not too thick blue color, not black or the same old aluminum color.

+ Screen is generally good, producing vivid colors despite the glossiness. As long as you view it at the right angle, the screen looks sharp.

+ Battery life...very good. I played 2 720p MKV movies at full brightness and it lasted nearly 4 and a half hours. So I can see it going 8 hours for light web/document editing use. Battery is built-in, so it's not easily swappable.

Lastly, price...fantastic price for a second generation i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 500gb hard drive. I don't play any PC games so I can't comment on it's graphics power. I use Picassa to edit photos and it's pretty snappy with other apps opened (Chrome, Outlook 2010, Visual Studio). I also do not need an optical drive.

So to sum it up the laptop looks good (not a thick heavy ugly piece of plastic), good performance and good price (half the price of a 13" macbook pro). I do love OS X Lion but I feel Windows 7 has bridged the gap. There are +/to the various operating systems, but for the most part it comes down to preferences and software that you need to get a job done. In this case, I need Outlook 2010 (Outlook 2011 for Mac is still not up to par, and Visual Studio for coding). Highly recommended!

Brilliant buy for my needs. Long battery life in Windows, sometimes saying 10hrs left when was typing in lyx. Slick design, fingers find keys easily for typing.

Dual-Booted: Installed Kubuntu 11.10 and runs flawlessly (just need small edit to get screen brightness adjustable and power managment improved-search in ubuntu 11.10 forums) but with about 90% of the battery life it gets in windows (Win7 power management little better) but still getting >7hrs battery life depending on usage.

Running python image analysis scripts as quick, if not quicker that on my Core 2 Quad on my desktop.

Screen looks great and the 1366x768 (I think) is brilliant as still can show a lot on the screen if using for coding and image displays.

The sound is good and makes watching series etc. great, especially helps having the 16:9 aspect ratio on the screen for most movies. Means picture not actually smaller than a 15inch screen.

Had this for 2 months now and no complaints.

Buy Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum Laptop (Cobalt Blue) Now

This is my 2nd Acer laptop purchase in a few months from the TimelineX Series. This thing is light, powerful, and the battery lasts 6-10 hours depending on use. Just a note: doesn't have a CD drive. This is fine because I don't need it and it makes it lighter. When compared to a similar Macbook pro (exact same specs and $500+ more), this thing is awesome. Other than the pre-installed bloatware (took about 2 hours to remove), I have no complaints.

Did a lot of research and found this to be the best combination of price, performance, reliability and size for our high schooler.

Pros:

more than adequate speed for non-gaming use, no visible lag on anything

nice trackpad, good sensitivity not quite MacBook Pro level, but best I've seen on a PC

price is great, esp. given how comparable it is to a MacBook.

sturdy build, the aluminum body feels like it'll withstand a decent amount of real-world abuse toting back and forth to class

8-hr battery life means it'll last a full schoolday without needing to plug in

USB 3 and HDMI interfaces mean it'll still be relevant 5 years from now

not overloaded with bloatware (unlike I'd read in some other reviews) 20 mins and you're free of any junk you don't want

Cons:

fan could be quieter (not bad, but not silent)

at 4.0 pounds it's light but not super-light, esp. considering there's no DVD drive (bought a $35 external DVD drive for the rare occasions that's needed)

glossy screen sigh, wish the industry would go back to matte finishes

no backlit keyboard seems only Dells (mediocre reliability record) and Macs (too expensive) get it

Overall, we're super-happy with it so far! Highly recommended.

------

Update: 2 weeks later:

I've had more time to work with it, and am still super-happy. In particular I set up an external USB DVD drive (Amazon's Buffalo DVSM-PC58U2VB, just $35 or something) and plugged the laptop's HDMI into our 50" plasma TV to see how it'd work totally perfect, super-smooth video (my previous laptops had problems there), sound coming through the HDMI just like it's supposed to, and even impressive DVD player software bundled in from Acer (clear.fi? or something).

Far as I can tell the only serious competition for this would be the Toshiba Portege R830, which is lighter by a significant .9 pounds (3.2 vs 4.1) AND includes a DVD drive, but is $150 more and doesn't have USB 3.0. I'm sticking with the Acer.

Want Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum Laptop (Cobalt Blue) Discount?

Intro

I prefer around a 13-14" laptop, I find that a netbook is too small for my big hands, but I find that a 15-17" laptop isn't as portable for what I want. You can find the standard 15.6" laptops for dirt cheap, but the 13-14" laptop range is harder to find a reasonably priced computer. When I found this computer, I realized I'd found something special. It had all the specs I wanted, a sleek chassis, slender design, a great processor, a great battery life, good memory and hdd size and at a decent price.

Overall Performance

This computer has an Intel Core i5 processor which is a quad-core processor which is sufficient for everything from everyday tasks to even some computer gaming. I'm not sure this is the machine you want for gaming on the go without the optical drive unless you're into that video game streaming service, which much lower grade laptops can handle just as well. Overall, the laptop is snappy and performs everything quickly and easily.

Display/Graphics:

The 13.3 display is quite beautiful. It's big enough to use yet small enough to remain portable. The colors and bright and crisp and the resolution is good even for movies. I'm not going to say that it is HD but that's not important to me anyhow. The screen is sturdily attached to the chassis of the computer via a cylinder like design. I believe that the graphics card has dedicated memory for which is a rarity in laptops.

Sound/Speakers:

The sound on this computer blows me away. It is amazing. Most laptop speakers are known for sucking even on Macbooks. But the speakers on this laptop are superb and there is rarely a reason you need external speakers. The sound is crisp and clear and it's just amazing how good the speakers are on this laptop.

Features & Accessories:

The keyboard is good, the keys are spaced more than your standard PC laptop though they take a little getting used to depending on what style of a laptop/keyboard you're switching from. The mouse-pad is ok, but a little smaller than I would like, though the pinch and double finger swipes are nice features but again take getting used to. Connection-wise, you've got 3 USB ports 1 of which is a USB 3.0 which is a nice feature. There's an HDMI port, VGA, mic, headphones and a card reader. It should be noted that like Netbooks most 13.3" laptops don't feature a DVD/CD drive and neither does this one. However, this shouldn't be a problem as you can pick up an external DVD drive relatively cheap online these days for those times you need a DVD/CD and a thumb stick, flash card or an external hard drive won't do.

Battery:

The battery life is outstanding for this little computer and provides anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on your usage. Which is great for a nice portable laptop. The plug also has a quick release feature so that if you trip on the cord the plug will disconnect from your laptop easily without causing damage to either the cord or the laptop. Also, the computer runs amazingly cool. It doesn't feel hot or even really warm to the touch even after hours of use and you can feel cool air blowing out the side which is quite nice.

Conclusion:

Everything in this laptop looks nice and is well designed. Simplicity, portability, great sound and sleekness of design are this products key features. If this sounds like the kind of laptop that will suit your needs I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.

PTC Premium High Speed USB 2.0 to Serial RS-232 DB-9 Converter with 3ft Detachable Extension Cable

PTC Premium High Speed USB 2.0 to Serial RS-232 DB-9 Converter with 3ft Detachable Extension Cable - Supports Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98, Linux and MacThe package that arrived look very different from the package pictured. It was a pretty simple bubble pack. A "PTC" sticker had been placed on top of the original manufacturer's name, "Viewcon". I plugged this in to a windows XP machine, and it worked out of the box, with no additional drivers necessary. I plugged this in to a Mac OS 10.6.8 machine and got nothing. So I went to install the drivers. Unfortunately, the product ships with a "mini" cd, making it impossible to put into a modern MacBook or MacBook Pro computer. I stuck the CD into my XP machine, shared the files over the net and followed the directions to install the driver. The driver is really made for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). I was doubtful if it was going to work. While I attempted to follow the directions provided for Mac installation, they were out of date, and slightly different from the screens I was actually seeing. The driver installation required a restart. After the restart, the new hardware was discovered, and I was able to use it right away with a terminal program. I am unsure whether "an activation" was required, and I don't think I activated anything. I wouldn't call this the perfect product, but it worked.

This cable works out of the box with Windows 7. I did not even need the disk. My PC recognized it, connected to the internet and got the driver. Unlike other cheap cable based on the Prolific chip set, this one is based on the FTDI Chip set and it will remain the same com port number, no matter which USB slot you plug it into.

rooCASE Executive Portfolio (Magenta) Leather Case Cover with Landscape / Portrait View for Dell St

rooCASE Executive Portfolio Leather Case Cover with Landscape / Portrait View for Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi / 4G TabletThe leather of the case is nice but the problem lies with the thin vinyl type material that was used to trim the perimeter of the case. The material is so thin that it started to peel along the folds within two months of purchase with very light use (about 2 hours per week). I have had the case for more than 6 months now, and have used the case only slightly more frequently than my initial use, and the look of the case is ruined by the peeled vinyl and exposed foam. For this reason I can't recommend this case.

within 2 months the Velcro that holds the case over the device does not work at all.

the Velcro that holds that cover inside the main case is a different type and works fine, all other features of this are great, but unfortunately if you can't secure the device it's all for nothing.

I consider this a great item, but with a flaw so serious that it almost useless.

Awesome case bought for my daughter she loves it. She has had it for a couple months and had no complaints about it.

This case is very good quality and very compact. I love the leather stitching and the fact that

it has an inner case for the actual tablet as well as a traveling case to put the tablet into.

The ONLY issue with this case that I can't seem to figure out is the stand. It comes with a

photo frame type stand to prop the tablet either landscape or portrait to have it stand alone,

BUT my prop stand seems to be either too short so it falls easily or it needs to be broken in.

That seems to be the only problem, otherwise it's a good case and prevents it from getting

scratched inside my purse/backpack.

Duo Pop for iPad

Duo Pop for iPadThink game show. You won't believe how holding a hand buzzer type of thing adds just the right amount of added excitement to a game. Highlights hidden pictures has never gotten me so riled up! Make sure you put the square device next to the MICROPHONE of your iPad NOT the home button. Come over to this link to read my casual review of both the Duo Pop and the Duo Plink--the second of which we are enjoying even more than this toy.

Great idea, but sometimes the handles didn't respond which upset my competetive sons. Just be sure you're close to receiver and have no obstacles between the handles and receiver

Over Thanksgiving the whole family played this game for HOURS. This is literally the first game that has appealed to all 4 of us. A 9 year old girl, a 13 year old boy and two 40 and 50 something parents. We played until our IPad died! Highly recommend this to anyone looking for an entertaining diversion from the stresses of life. It's fun to use the "poppers" to answer the questions too such a simple idea!

I bought this as a gift for a friend. We used it and enjoyed playing the games. It appears there are only a few games with which these work. Fun item.

Gameshow style answer buttons work well. Good family fun with games made by Highlights. Needs more apps though. Perhaps trivial pursuit style game.
