I REALLY like the low profile of this case. It is not bulky and fits nicely in a handbag (medium-size) or messenger bag. It is sturdy enough to give good protection from anything bumping or rubbing against it. The zippers work well too. You can read your Kindle while it is in the case, but don't expect the case to stay on very securely; it will require you to hold on to it slightly since the Kindle fits under an elastic band. I own several portable DVD players, but wanted one with TV reception to use in the car. When the price of the ED8850B Duo Box Pro dropped $30, it seemed like a good deal, so I picked it up. This is a pretty standard DVD player, with a 7" screen. Picture quality is good, and colors appear vibrant. The battery is internal, so the unit is compact, and has a low profile. Rated battery life is only 2.5 hours, so expect to actually get about 2 hours. Average at best.

The cover flips up, but does not swivel. The controls are pretty standard, and are easy to use, with nice positive clicking buttons. One big plus is that the volume level gets quite loud, impressive considering the unit has just a couple of small speakers. As is fairly typical, the sound is mostly treble, with just a hint of bass. There is an SD card slot, so you can play MP3 files, or view image files. When viewing photos, the unit automatically goes into a slideshow mode. Image quality is similar to most DVD players, too saturated, inaccurate colors, and not very sharp. Landscape photos look less compressed than those in portrait mode. The larger the files, the slower the images scroll.

Many DVD players have issues with playing material recorded on DVDR's. This player appears to have problems reading some Fuji and Dynex brand DVDR's. These discs were finalized, and playable on other recorders, but the Envizen could not read them. Most DVDR's by Sony, Memorex, Maxell, and Amazon Basics were found to be readable.

Overall the DVD player rates a solid B, but the results using the TV component were a major disappointment, although this is not necessarily the fault of the equipment. A short antenna with a magnetized base is plugged into the player, and if there is something metal around, you can attach the antenna to it, and hopefully improve your reception. Using the auto scan to search for channels, there are apparently about 16 channels in my area. Unfortunately less than half of them have a strong enough signal to be received reliably, and of those, maybe three or four, have programming that is of interest to me. In the car, attaching the antenna to the vehicle's metal frame, improves the signal reception slightly, but there are still many stations that do not come very well. I was hoping that this unit would have better reception than an Axion AXN-8701, but the results were pretty similar, which probably means the strength of the signals in my areas is not that great. You might want to test out the reception in your area, before you buy this.

The player comes with an AC power adapter cord, car power adapter cord, remote controller and a cheapie nylon carrying case. The remote control is pretty convenient to use, and you don't have to jam down hard on the buttons. The buttons are spaced far apart enough, so unless you have really big fingers, you don't have to worry about pressing the wrong button. There are some functions included that I find very handy, including Volume + and -, Mute, and Subtitle. For some reason the Menu button does not seem to work, although pressing the Exit button usually accomplishes the same function. The carrying case has adjustable straps, and is designed to be hung on the seat headrest. This rig works, but it is a pretty shaky setup that I don't intend on using. The car adapter cord is only about 3' long. If the only 12V outlet you have is at the driver's console, the cord may not be long enough to reach the DVD player when hanging on the headrest.

On the plus side, the Duo Box Pro is compact, lightweight, and has a decent picture, which makes it great to take on trips. Had I paid full price, I probably would have returned it, as the TV reception is poor in my area. It's not a glowing recommendation, but without good TV reception, the total package is average at best, particularly at the regular price. If you remove the TV factor, there are many better DVD players available for the same money.

I bought one for myself and love it. I have the "B". I understand the "A" had numerous problems. I've had no problems at all. The battery last a little over 2-1/2 hrs and plays DVD w/out interruption (as "A" was reviewed to have issues) I get about 30 tv stations with a fantastic picture. The photo play is great as well. I am very pleased with this item and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great portable DVD/TV/SD card player... It says you can plug in your wii but I haven't tried that...worth every penny...A friend from the office saw it and bought one for himself...

I received the item and started the charge of the internal battery. After 48 hrs, the battery life was 5 minutes and it went dead. I like the TV and features but the screen picture is fair quality. I have a mygotv 3.5" and that picture is 10x better. The battery life stinks. The reception on the antenna is fair and I have not hooked it to my camper outside antenna. I like it and will return it or use my extended warranty. Also the help 866-703-6275 on the warranty and owners manual is DISCONNECTED, no help from manufacture. It is a good value for the price if you can get a working , China made unit.

I bought this product for my husband for his birthday and bought another one for myself to use at work. I was very impressed with it the whole package at first. The color and sound were excellent. When the battery needed to be charged on my husband's unit he plugged it in to the wall outlet to charge it the unit started to make a clicking sound and the indicator light kept blinking from red to yellow. When he tried to turn the unit on there was no picture. He has only used it about 3 times and it should not be acting like this. I have been calling the number given for tech support in the instruction manual for five days and keep getting a busy signal no matter what time of day I call. I am going to send it back whenever I can find someone to send it to! Very disappointed in the whole process. The busy signal can only mean one of two things. 1) They are having numerous issues and complaints with the product or 2) They do not plan to honor their warranty. I did not purchase our Digital TV/DVD players at a discount price and am very unhappy with the way I am being treated. UPDATE: Called their customer service number today (6-8-10)and it has been disconnected. What does that tell you about their product and their warranty?

Krusell Horizontic Plus with Multidapt? Leather Case - XS-Wide (95181)

The Horizontic Plus is my third Krusell case and probably my last. This is a shame. Krusell makes wonderful high quality leather cases but all of the cases which use the Multidapt mount have a weakness in the plastic Multidapt bracket which is riveted to the back of the case. The bracket has very thin plastic flanges which hold the removable plastic round swivel pin in place. When any kind of side torque is applied to the case (i.e. having a belt hung case catch a car seat while getting into a car) the plastic flanges on the back of the case snap off. This destroys the case because the bracket is not removable.

It is ironic that Krusell sells heavy duty steel belt holders and steel swivel pins because they attach to a Multidapt mounting bracket made of plastic less than 1/16" thick.

I loved this case and the other 2 before it. Unfortunately all 3 failed in the same way. If Krusell changed the bracket to metal, this would fix the problem and I would return as a customer.

There are a few cases rated for Nokia N-95. I checked three of them, one had no belt loop, second was too large but still hard to reach the phone fast. Third specifically advertised as for N95-3 phone was equipped with large magnetic flap, which having too strong magnetic field, was triggering screen to horizontal position, and interacting with phone in other weird ways. Paying about half of the grant for phone I refused to stop searching for the right home for my new amazing tool (toy?). Google somehow redirected me to Symbian users group and from one of the entry I learned about Krusell Horizontic 95181. The number is important. A few days later I had Krusell in my hands. The case has dual on belt carry system. One is a Multidapt with a large and strong belt clip. If person prefers to carry phone case on belt, close to the body (safer for the phone and its large screen in my opinion), it needs simply to skip installing clip and use two very elegant and well located belt loops, each finished with snap visible at the bottom of case. The loops can be used with belts up to two inches wide (I use 1-3/8"). Initially phone enters the case with some resistance. What I did, was before the first night I turned off the phone to avoid its complains that too many buttons are pressed at the same time and wrapped the phone with one piece of paper towel forcing the whole package gently into case. In the morning I had a looking very elegant and small, custom made case with phone perfectly fit, but never pressurized to accidentally activate any function. Small magnetic button (magnetic snap) works fine and never triggers phone magnetic switches. The open bottom allows for easy access. A quick push lifts phone up from case, while other fingers grab it from the top. If never tried before, this technique should be tried over the bed first few times, before being mastered.

This product definitely protects the laptop and is well padded, but it is by NO means a laptop "sleeve". It is not very snug in there and there is plenty more room on the exterior of the laptop, making it not ideal to use this within another case or backpack (which is what I bought it for).

I rated it poorly because in addition to it definitely not being a sleeve, it is not custom for the Y580 or Y570 even, only 16ish inch laptops in general.

I was an extremely big disappointment when finally getting it.

SanDisk 8GB Compact Flash CF Ultra 30MB/s ( SDCFH-008G , Bulk Package )

I originally bought this card as a cheapo backup for my much more expensive Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s CF card that I use in my 7D. However, I have not noticed a practical difference in speed between the two cards. I can count on both hands the number of times I've had to wait for the buffer to flush with either card and this is while shooting 25MB RAW files in 8FPS bursts. I just bought two more of the 8GB Ultras so I don't have to worry about running out of space when shooting on location. No need to spend extra on speed the 7D doesn't take advantage of. I highly recommend Sandisk in general and these cards in particular.

Superfast with the Canon 40D in picture taking and in downloading through the camera.

Works well with my canon 7D even if it's not UDMA. Like the manual says, I can shoot up to 96 jpegs or 15 raw images (up until the camera buffers fulls up). I can also take pictures while filming in full HD.

I bought two of these. One of them works fine and the other caused issues with my Canon 5D. I took several pictures without any problems but then it locked my camera up when I tried to review some of the shots. I am also unable to move any of the images to my IMac using a card reader.

Both of the cards came in a plastic holder sealed with an adhesive backed label. This label was difficult to remove and left adhesive residue on the outside of the holder. This residue is probably not something that you want to get into a $3000 camera.

In the future I will stick with the retail packaging. I am not sure what "bulk pack" means but I now question whether the same quality standards are adhered to. Maybe these are refurbished in some way? If you do decide to save some money and buy these, test them thoroughly before using (always good advice but not always followed).

I am new to CF cards and maybe I was just unlucky, but if I were Sandisk I would be cautious about the use of my brand on items like this.

I have used CF cards for many years. I have a Canon Rebel XTI and when I tried using this card with that camera it bent a pin in my camera. I will now have to pay to have it repaired. I am sure the vendor will point fingers at amazon or sandisk and in the end the consumer will get screwed! I would suggest inserting any new cards into an inexpensive card reader before putting it into an expensive camera.

Simpletech is a known quantity. Other brands aren't, and all I hear is how people have gotten defective cards from the other brands. Not Simpletech. This is my brand of choice. I have owned one of these SimpleTech 512's for about a year now and it has been hard at work in my Dell AXIM X5 almost every day. The X5 has had a lot of compatibility issues with SD cards and I found that out first hand after I bought it. I have tried several brands of SD cards in my AXIM and the only one that works correctly is the SimpleTech. For anyone in Chicago who may be considering this device, my daily commute is up and down Lake Shore Drive surrounded by the radio towers on top of the buildings downtown and it works. Can be a little static-y at times, but the signal improves rapidly as you get away from the Loop.

Bought this battery for my Axim X30 624Mhz. Haven't owned the battery all that long but I did do a bit of testing and got more then twice the battery life on my Axim. (About 9 hours usage time as a text file/ebook reader vs 4 hours with stock 950 MaH battery.) Fits in the original Dell case that I have and fits in the original cradle just fine. (Both alone and attached to the Axim.) It will take longer to charge because of the increased capacity. (But you won't have to charge it quite as often so IMHO it balances out.)

It's got a very snug fit, so it took some time to get the thing on. On the other hand, that makes me less worried about it coming off it I were to drop the Axim. Not sure why it's called an X1111 battery, it should be considered a W1359 equivalent. (In other words, it's an alternative to the Dell 1800 MaH extended battery which looks much the same.) The X1111 is the stock 950 MaH battery that's flush with the back of the case. (AKA the smaller Axim battery. :) )

Keep in mind that not all cases may work with the extended battery. The original Dell case is one that does. (And that's probably why they made the sides elastic, to fit their 1800 MaH version.)

I'll keep it short and sweet.. It works as advertised and more. I love it, and I just ordered two more so I have a good lead time before needing recharging. The ONLY drawback is that the battery extends from the back of the body so it might not fit some cases, but they are available for it and tell you they will fit the extended battery.

But I did not receive the Screen Protector that would have come with that item. I ordered two of these batteries and, so far as I can tell, they are ok. Just got them today and am still charging the first one. If I have any problems with these batteries, I'll amend this review.

My AXIM is old and not good for much but it is an excellent Mp3 player and I use it to check my shell account email. This battery lasts for a very long time. A+++!

I purchased this to get the free super saver shipping so it worked out to cost me about $1.50 instead of paying for shipping. However, estimated delivery was around 15 days? Doh! ;-)

Anyway, I wanted a card that was at least a class 4 to record HD video with my pansonic point and shoot camera. I've seen a lot of people argue about what the class of the card means and it's actual transfer rates so I thought I'd be safe getting one thats in the middle of the road. There are 4 classes, starting with 2 and ending at 6. Supposedly getting a class 6 doesn't always mean that it will perform better than say a class 2. The old way of classing these cards was to use the X factor. A 133X card would transfer about 20megs a second and so on but I've seen a 4gb usb stick that was 150x that transfered over 40megs a second. Even that way of classing the cards failed to hold up to the reality of benchmarks. So, if I'm going to write a review I may as well make it worth reading by doing some psudo-scientific tests and compare it to an older Crucial 4gb Class 6 card I purchased about 5 months ago. Technically the Crucial with it's mighty class 6 rating should blow the HP out of the water. We'll see.

To do the test, I installed the latest Sisoftware Sandra 2010 benchmarking software and gave these card the once over. Sandra is considered by many to be one of the best benchmarking software programs around! I conducted the test on my brand new Asus 1000HE Netbook which has a really nice SDHC card reader built in and running windows 7 premium. This is the true definition of a "real world test".

Sisandra comes with a large catalog of SDHC cards they tested themselves and this allows you to compare the results showing the best ones all the way down to the poorest performer. You can even compare your SDHC card to a sata hard drive or a 2gb usb flash drive. Whatever floats your boat. The test starts by transfering 512 bites and working it's way up to 512megs and it examines the speed at which it handles the constant stream of data going in and coming out.

My older Crucial 4GB Class 6 shows 2408 ops/minute with an endurance factor of 85.1%. This HP class 4 shows 2261 ops/min with an endurance of 95.3%. They tell me that higher numbers are better. As you can see, there is very little diffference between the Crucial and the HP except I paid about $25 for the Crucial. Both these cards are perfectly fine for ordinary applications and have enough bandwidth to handle at least 720p HD video from your digital point and shoot camera. Most digital cameras limit the recording to 15 minutes anyway, so if all you want to do is capture video with your point and shoot, then you should have good results with this card. Overall, both my cards are ranked #3 in the world of storage devices. If you plan on capturing 1080p HD video you'll probably want to invest more money in better performing cards. Othewise you might get dropped frames as you push the limits of these slower cards. That would create a stuttering effect in your video that you would notice as the camera pans back and forth. You do pretty much get what you pay for here but sometimes you pay double for something that doesn't deliver much more. The old saying comes to mind. "Caveat Emptor Buyer beware!"

The fastest SD card was the 1GB Peak Xtreme which ran about 8000 ops/min. The fastest SDHC was a Toshiba 16GB which benchmarked at 4950 ops/min. Thats the kind of card you'll want for 1080p video because not only does it handle the bandwidth but it has a lot of capacity to capture those huge 1080p movie files. It won't take you long to fill up 16gb.

To give you a sense of perspective, the 80gb apple ipod transfers at 4422 ops/min. The Viking 1gb compact flash card can transfer at a whopping speed of 232 ops/min. and yes, Viking is still in business and even sell a 64meg SD card here on amazon. Must be useful for some kind of old technology like ancient gaming systems.

Hope this helps you decide what to buy! Take it easy!

HP's 8GB SDHC card appears to be one of the better buys at the time of this review, as far as price/performance/capacity is concerned. In my case, it fulfills the task assigned store a large number of photos for an electronic picture frame to display. However, its relatively low write speed may NOT make it suitable if the intended use was in a camera taking large 'rapid fire' shots.

PERFORMANCE

I would like to note that I did not test the card with a camera but it's stated 'Class 4' speed class, which is the equivalent of a 26x speed rating should guarantee a MINIMUM of 4MB/s.

Unlike the 'x' ratings, the speed class ratings are NOT certified by an independent body so, more or less, you will have to decide whether you trust the card's maker. It so happens that I DID test the card myself and I found that I could copy 1.6 GB worth of photos in about 5 minutes. This is 5MB/s for writing on the card for the first time, indicating that the Class 4/26x claim is honest.

Practically, if you are going to use this card in a camera, depending on the quality of the pics you are taking, you may or may not be happy with its performance. At 12 megapixels, a 100% quality JPG would produce a 2-3 MB file so, without even counting the overhead, your camera will spend about half second, possibly more to write to the card which may or may not be in line with your own expectation. For better performance, look for a higher 'class' number 133x/Class 20, for example, should support 20 MB/s or writing up to 10 12-megapixel JPG photo files per second.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES/CONCERNS

The card comes formatted as FAT32 and my Vista Enterprise computer was able to write to it. If, for whatever reason, FAT32 is not what you need, you should be able to format it under Windows/Vista, Mac or Unix/Linux to whatever you may need.

Not ALL cameras support FAT32. Older cameras may only be aware of FAT16 and can't see any card larger that 4GB. If in doubt, check with the manufacturer or maybe read your camera's reviews at Amazon.

Related to the above anyone who may have a device meant to use SD cards should be aware that SDHC may not work with it so it's better to ask the maker.

Finally, one nice thing about HP's card it comes with a write-protect tab. If you are not using your card in a camera and want to prevent accidental writes, move the tab to the 'lock' position but, be careful, it will NOT work with your camera if you forget to move the tab back to 'unlock'.

RATING

This is a honestly rated Class 4 card. Class 4, as I explained, means SLOW so, if blazing-fast write speed is not an issue, this is probably what you need given the price and the maker's reputation by the way, the card is manufactured in Japan.

For what it is, the card deserves 5 stars.

I was attracted to this HP 16 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card partially because it is priced lower than other cards in the same class (such as the SanDisk Ultra 16 GB Class 4 and Kingston 16 GB Class 4). Another reason being that it is from Hewlett Packard, a company once known for cutting-edge technology and inventions.

Benchmark results (see my uploaded screenshot in Customer Images section) showed that the read-speed of this card is reasonable. It stays at about 18-19MB/s, similar to other class-4 cards. Its write-speed, on the other hand, is highly dependent on the file size:

For smaller file size of 1MB, its write speed is only 3.7MB/s

For larger file size of 5MB, its write speed is faster at 7.9MB/s

For huge files (1GB), its write speed peaked at 10.1MB/s

For a SDHC card to be marketed as a 'class-4', it just needs to achieve a sequential write speed of 4MB/s under best-case scenario. The speed of this HP class-4 card is way above its requirement. A less honest company would probably market it as a 'class-10' card instead.

Considering its lower price, this HP card is a great value comapred to other class-4 cards.

To the average consumer, however, either an honestly rated class-4 or class-10 card will perform just the same in a digital camera. This is because the frame rate of a typical point-and-shoot camera is limited to under 1 fps. Only if you have a digital SLR and shoot in rapid-fire burst mode, then the speed difference will become noticeable.

Additional notes:

The real capacity of this '16GB' card, as reported by my computer, is just 14.9GB. This is actually normal, because '1GB' to computer people means '2 to the power 30', which is 7% higher than 1 billion. So 14.9GB works out to be slightly over 16 billion bytes, which means '16GB' according to marketing people.

The benchmark results for this HP card are nearly identical to that of the Kingston 16GB class-4 card (see my uploaded screenshots for comparison). This makes me suspect that this 'HP' card is actually manufactured by Kingston. Of course, HP could have switched supplier at any time. That may explain why another reviewer (from the product page of AmazonBasics 16GB Class 4 SD Flash Memory Card) claims that he achieved 13.1MB/s write speed with this 'HP' card)

On the back of this SDHC card is says 'Made in Japan'. But on the back of the package it says 'Made in Taiwan'.

I wanted to buy a higher gig memory card for concerts. I always seem to end up running out right in the middle of filming a favorite song. I've had mine for about 7 months now and it works great. It can charge my iPhone 5 from dead to full several times before needing to be recharged. This is an interesting "Black Box" product with no Label, or any indication on the device showing the manufacturers name. It looks virtually identical to another brand name product and seems to be very well made. I have used it, and tested it, over the past couple of months with these results:

It charged a 3rd generation iPad from 5% to 67%. It charged a first generation iPad from 5% to 100% with power to spare. Amperage and Voltage from the 2A USB port while charging is comparable to that from the Apple wall charger that comes with the iPad. (Charging from either device seems to peak at about 6 watts)

It runs a USB powered fan (ARCTIC Portable USB-Fan, a truly great little personal fan) for over 35 hours non-stop on one charge.

I used it while camping in warm humid weather to run the fan for 3 nights in a row and then used it to power my iPad 3 starting at a 15% charge level on a flight for 4 hours until it was finally depleted and had charged my iPad to 50%.

I have charged it with the "Instapark" 10 watt USB solar panel from fully depleted to fully charged. This took about 9 hours over a 2 day period with the panel laying flat in full sunlight.

I am very impressed with this little power pack, even though it has no name, and despite the concerns I have that the USB ports may not be beefy enough to support my cool little fan over the long haul. It would not be fair, based on my experience so far, to give this any less than a 5 star rating.

This little charger works like a champ. Not only do I love the fact that it has a 2A and a 1A output. This allows you to charge an ipad on the 2Amp output. It also works great with the instapark solar panel to recharge itself. I used this on a 4 day camping trip. I charged over 5 phones over the weekend multiple times. I started off with the charger fully charged from a pc but then had it running all weekend, either charger phones or re-charging itself on the solar panel.

The one odd thing is that, if you plug in a device you have to unplug the male usb connector in order to have it start charging again. So rather than keeping cables plugged into the 2 port and plugging in devices on the other end of the cables, you have to unplug the cable from the batter pack and plug it back in, in order to get it to start charging.

Overall, well worth the money.

My original review was posted on 09/11/12 and needs to be corrected/retrackted. My poor opinion of this product was incorrect. True the battery life was horrible...but there was a reason. I am using this battery in my SkyCaddie SG5 and somehow the backlite feature was set on 100%. I discovered this because the unit kept getting quite warm during use. So, I turned off the backlight (it can be adjusted from 0 to 100%). Now the battery life is great, unit works great...at least 1-1/2 rounds per charge. In the interim I purchased a simliar battery direct from SkyCaddie thinking this would solve the problem...NOT. So, now I have 2 batteies. Not a bad thing.

Aluminum Black Metal Case for HTC 7 Trophy T8686

I love this case! I think having aluminum imparts a strength that the vast majority of plastic cases simply can't provide; I have dropped my phone from at least 4ft heights repeatedly, and while that would have resulted in at least a scratch or chip on almost all of my other devices with their plastic cases, there was no evidence of damage on this phone. I would disagree with the commenter who said that this case is too large; for anyone who has used Otter cases, this case is MUCH thinner and and has similar strength. The case is also surprisingly light. I also love the hinge mechanism and how the hinge is so small; it makes insertion and removal of the device (should you ever need to) a complete breeze, without the hinge becoming irritating with movement. My only criticism is that the latch tends to pop open a little too easily, occasionally opening if I brush my arm against it or if my backpack buckle hits it. However, I would stress that the phone fits so snugly that even on the few occasions when that has occurred the phone does not fall out.

Very well made unique aluminum cover with clip. Sort of got a hand made feel to the product. Tired of all the same old plastic cell phone stuff then this might be for you. Very pleased with purchase.

Keyspan by Tripp Lite USA-19HS Hi-Speed USB Serial Adapter, PC, MAC, supports Cisco Break Sequence

Installed the configuration software, plugged it in, and it worked immediately. I am using it with WinXP Service Pack 2, and it communicates great with a complex serial interface to an unusual piece of electronics I have, so its very compatible with "real" serial ports, unlike some other adapters I have tried that seem to only work with modems or PDA docks. The adapter as shipped is actually a small 1"x1.5"x3" box connected to your computer with a 3' USB cable that can be unplugged from it. It has a green LED on top to tell you when it is properly configured as well as when a program has opened that serial port and when it is passing data. Very functional and easy to use; the configuration software even includes tests to make sure the device is recognized and is properly communicating with your computer. The configuration software also ensures that the same COM port is assigned to the device, no matter which USB port on your computer you plug it into each time, unlike previous adapters I've had which created a different COM port each time you plugged the device into a different USB port (very annoying); the driver also has an option to behave like those other drivers, but most people will probably want to always have it act like the same COM port, the default.

Despite the first reviewers comments, the Keyspan 19HS works just fine with linux. The driver for the 19HS was included in the kernel source a while ago. Standard off-the-shelf kernels (2.4.24 and 2.6.5) work without any patches. In addition to regular usb support, my kernels also load the keyspan and usb-serial modules.

After executing "mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0", I am happily communicating with Palms and GPSs using the new /dev/ttyUSB0 device.

My USA-19HS worked ok for a couple of months, then stopped working. It started identifying itself as a a TUSB3410 Boot Device, which Keyspan's website says meant it was defective. I then went into customer service hell. After I posted my info to a tech support forum on their website, they vanished. I poked again a week and a half later, and they came back and told me to mail the device in. I did so. Then they vanished off the face of the earth. No replacement sent to me, no posts to my electronic tech support thread (despite multiple posts by me), and they don't answer their phones (there's a recording saying to visit the website). Eventually, weeks later, after I threatened to go to the BBB, someone posted and said they'd look for my device and get back to me that afternoon. Two days later, nothing again.

The device works fine, but heaven forbid you actually need to get it replaced. At this point, I have neither my dead device nor a refund -I mailed it in, and it's gone in a black hole.

I've been using the Keyspan USA-19HS for years. The first one was purchased after reading recommendations from several control system experts, and I haven't been disappointed. Rockwell Automation sells their own version of a USB serial port adapter (PN 9300-USBS), but it's about $130. Don't bother. The Keyspan is inexpensive and has proven to be 100% compatible with everything I've needed to connect to via a serial cable.

I've used it with laptops and desktops running Windows 98SE, Windows XP and Windows 7. I've used it on SLC 5/xx series processors, ControlLogix 5000 processors, Siemens/TI 505 series processors, Keyence laser measurement equipment, modems, serial printers, barcode scanners, Reliance and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley drives, and just about everything else. Never a problem. It works with straight serial cables, null modem cables, and every type of serial adapter I've thrown at it. The Keyspan USA-19HS is the cheapest piece of control system communication hardware that I own, and it's probably the most-used. It has never let me down.

Since I first started using the Keyspan adapter, I've bought over a dozen more for service techs, co-workers and even a couple of bosses. The Keyspan is extremely configurable, fast, reliable, durable and easy to use. The Keyspan adapter comes with a driver CD and a USB cable and takes just a few minutes to set up. I keep one in my laptop bag at all times.

UPDATE 4/5/12: it appears that Tripp-Lite has made a few changes since they took over the Keyspan line. Among the changes was a decision to use a cheaper USB socket. From the outside, it looks almost the same. The only notable difference is a lack of molded numbers (1, 2, 3 and 4) on the end of the plastic tab in the middle of the port. Unfortunately, the cheaper USB socket doesn't retain the cable connector as well as the older ones did. The weaker spring conductors allow the cable to be pulled most of the way out of the socket, resulting in a lost connection and possibly a BSOD (blue screen of death).

I took a couple of the older Keyspan adapters (no Tripp-Lite logo on the housing) and a couple of the newer Keyspan adapters (with the Tripp-Lite logo on the housing), opened the housings and compared them. The differences I saw between old and new were minor: notably a different PCB manufacturer's logo and a couple of chips that had changed brands. And the USB type B port. The old has a partial back shell (you can see the white plastic on the back of the port), while the new has a full back shell (can't see the plastic in back).

The few cents that Tripp-Lite saved by using a cheaper socket isn't worth it. Whereas the old Keyspans would easily support the weight of the adapter + a 10 ft. coiled-up serial cable, the new Keyspans cannot. The new ones can't support the weight and allow the USB cable to pull partway out of the port. I tested 3 of the new Keyspan adapters and they all performed the same: almost no load-bearing capability at all.

Since the adapters still work fine except for the USB port, I simply desoldered the cheap-o port from each of the new adapters and replaced it with an FCI port (FCI PN 61729-1011BLF -54 cents each). No more problems. Most users probably won't be able replace the port, so a quick (if not awkward and/or ugly) fix is to either glue the USB cable into the port or use tape or a heavy rubber band to retain the cable.

Tripp-Lite, shame on you for ruining a perfectly good adapter to save a few pennies. I have reduced the adapter's 5 star rating to 2 stars based on the poor quality of the new USB port. Like the old Baskin-Robbins saying goes, "There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that man's lawful prey."

UPDATE 10/11/12: A coworker bought a half dozen new Keyspan USA-19HS adapters today, so I wasted no time in testing them out to see if the USB port problem was fixed. I tested all 6 of the adapters and was happy to see that none suffered from loose USB ports. The ports don't have any numbers (1, 2, 3 and 4) molded on the end of the plastic tab in the middle of the port, so I'm guessing they're not anything special, but they seem to hold onto the USB cable quite well. I only hope Tripp-Lite has learned a lesson about trusting others to adhere to high quality standards based on faith alone. I have updated the adapter's rating from 2 stars to 4 stars based on seeing and testing this batch of adapters.
