Pros: I really like the functionality of this board.

It serves me well as an HTPC remote on XBMC.

It's nice that it's RF and not IR which means I don't have to have line-of-sight for the remote/keyboard to work.

It's a nice size.

Feels natural to hold.

The battery is rechargeable.

Battery lasts a long time.

The key back light looks great.

Cheaper than other options.

Ability to change touchpad/arrow key orientation (from horizontal to vertical) makes this a solid buy.

Laser pointer makes this an HTPC remote as well as a cat remote.

The tactile feel of the keys is decent.

Hard keys (as opposed to soft keys like on a typical remote control)

Cons: Don't expect to type as fast as you can text on a cell phone.

The key recognition is a little hit and miss at times. (Particularly the "N" key for some reason)

I've had a problem once or twice with keys that seem to "stick" although the key itself doesn't appear to be stuck visually.

The touchpad can be a little difficult to get the hang of.

Function keys only go to F8 I believe.

Shipping: For some reason I never got a tracking number with this order. I ended up contacting the seller (Sunvalleytek) because I was afraid it wouldn't ship. Well it came in on time. I made the careless mistake of paying for expedited shipping on a Friday afternoon. I wasn't thinking, or else I'd have realized that it wouldn't have mattered because they don't ship on weekends. It came in on the following Thursday.

Other thoughts: This is a great buy in my opinion. Way better than the MCE remote I was using before. VisionTek has one called the CandyBoard. This Rii is the exact same thing, only cheaper. This is because the company that did the R&D on this sold the design to more than one company. Rii was one of them and is offering it at a cheaper price (*Disclaimer* this is the story that I heard, so I may have been misinformed).

I purchased this as a home theater PC remote.

I am very happy with the keyboard and very pleased with the keyboard backlighting.

Where this product fails is the touchpad, it is too small and extremely imprecise but... works.

It works as advertised. I like being able to sit back in the recliner and still be able to control the laptop. I like to watch TV in bed, like Netflix or Hulu, and this allows me to change shows or shut it down without getting out of bed. I love the price too!

WiPry-Combo

I was hoping for a simple way to view electronic signals in my home. This tiny device does what it advertises but is short on interpretation instructions. The manual is very detailed in how to change the settings and operate all the on screen buttons, but provides zero information on how to interpret what is on the screen. Having never used a spectrum analyzer before, I suspect most of my problem is related to my ignorance of how other spectrum analyzers work.

I sent an email to the manufacturer requesting more information on why to use the various settings and how to interpret what the screen showed. I received a friendly and partially helpful answer in a very timely manner, but it was way too brief to really help. I suspect I will have to do some serious research on the use of spectrum analyzers before being able to use this device as I intended. I plan to make another effort to communicate with the manufacturer in the future to see if they can be more helpful.

It is a nice little package and a lot cheaper than a stand alone spectrum analyzer. For the home experimenter it is useless without serious information on how to interpret the pretty pictures it displays. I gave it 4 stars for looks and function as it seems to perform the advertised tasks nicely, but cannot give the extra star for lack of interpretation instructions.

Acer Aspire V3-571G-6407 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

To begin, I've owned laptops in both 14" and 17" sizes and specifically chose this 15-inch model based on my previous experiences with each. The screen size is perfect for productivity while keeping the machine small enough for lugging around. At around 5 pounds, I have no trouble carrying it to the next room or outside so portability is great. My first impression out of the box was that this is an elegant looking machine but you probably won't draw attention like you would with an ultrabook (which I actually like!)

I really like the responsiveness of the keyboard, though I feel like it will take some "breaking in" before the keys are well-suited for typing long documents. The display is crisp and colors are showing up nicely. I'd probably rate it a 7 or 8 based on the display quality alone.

Several reviews have stated that the touchpad is difficult to use, and to some extent I would agree. However, there is one setting, namely the horizontal scrolling setting, that can be turned off in the Elan touchpad configuration (from the taskbar) which will almost eliminate the touchpad issue that the CNET and notebook review sites don't mention. I believe Acer simply didn't factor in the horizontal scroll ability from Elan because there are arrows for the vertical scroll on the touchpad, but none for horizontal.

Windows 8 has some issues, but they aren't related to the notebook itself and this isn't a windows 8 review so I won't badmouth nor rate Acer on these grounds. Specifically there should have been better support for users without a touch screen device (I refuse to use a display with fingerprints on it) but that blame should fall on Microsoft, not acer.

There is a good deal of pre-installed software, but much of it seems somewhat useful. I usually remove about 80-100% of pre-installed manufacturer programs on the first boot, but with this machine I kept about 40% of the software to at least give them a chance.

Solid performance, zero lag, and everything just seems to work. No trouble with any of the hardware thus far (still first day of use) and I'm generally feeling really good about this purchase with the help of those black Friday discounts!

I may update this review in a few weeks once I've had some more time to get used to it, but I wanted to average out the overall ratings of this system because at least the first review was completely biased based on the experience of the operating system alone and the ability to play games. Please don't waste our time and badmouth the entire system in your reviews because you had a bad experience with a few aspects of it.

I own the previous model of this laptop. Acer upgraded the new model from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The only other difference between the two models is that Acer swapped out the second generation sandy bridge i5 processor for the the new third gen ivy bridge i5 processor. The new i5 3210m processor has a slight performance increase of 5 percent, better graphics performance, and should get slightly better battery life as compared to the old 2450m.

With that said, here is my review for the previous model. Everything else I said will still apply.

It took nine days from the time I ordered the laptop until it was delivered.

Several components of this laptop can be upgraded/tweaked to increase the overall performance of the laptop. The Nvidia graphic interface can be adjusted in Windows to a high performance mode which will override the Intel graphics. The Nvidia 630m gives a noticeable performance boost. The Nvidia GPU puts a serious drain on the battery if you aren't plugged in to the wall. Make sure to check that your Nvidia graphics card is updated with the newest drivers that are available.

I also installed 4GB of additional DDR3 RAM in the empty slot. I went with the 20$ budget RAM that Amazon suggested as an accessory. And finally, I spent a few hours cloning the 5400rpm hard drive onto a new Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD. It was my first time cloning a drive and it turned into a huge headache, but I learned a lot. I'm seeing read speeds of 480 MB/S on the new SSD. After I got windows up and running on the SSD, I went through and uninstalled all of the bloatware that Acer pre-installs and cleaned up the junk programs running in memory.

After upgrades, this budget laptop is almost exactly on par for performance with the most expensive version of the new Macbook Pro with the Ivy Bridge i7 processor that costs over twice as much. With the upgrades, my laptop boots up in less than ten seconds. After upgrades, your Windows experience index should be around a 7. According to Windows, "A computer with a base score of 6.0 or 7.0 has a faster hard disk, and can support high-end, graphics-intensive experiences, such as multiplayer and 3‑D gaming and recording and playback of HDTV content."

I'm very impressed with the performance so far. As a test, I simultaneously ran a dozen windows in Google Chrome, an HD movie, BitTorrent, Warcraft 3, Photoshop, and Microsoft Word. The processor gadget in Windows showed that the processor was running at only 4 percent. It handles every game I've tested on the highest settings. So far I've played Call of Duty 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Warcraft and Borderlands. It also handles video editing 1080p HD movies without any lag.

Pros:

A bit heavier than it looks, but definitely reasonable

I needed a cheap(er) laptop that could play games, do school, play movies; be the ultimate entertainment machine. After spending dozens of hours of research and reading way to many reviews, I came across the answer; the Acer V3. After seeing the price drop from $650 to $530, I finally made my decision and purchased this semi-gaming behemoth.

Packaging: As you might expect, it came with lots of cardboard, and lots of bubble wrap. It arrived in perfect condition however, and I am happy with the speed of the shipping. 5/5

Build: A little on the heavy side (around 5lbs.), but is not near as bad as my previous Dell Latitude. The screen is nice, winning the best screen award in the house :D, bright too. The keyboard is stellar, and it has a full number pad that is excellent for gaming. I have not been experiencing the mousepad issues other reviewers have raged about, I like it for light web browsing, but I usually prefer my gaming mouse over the mousepad. A downside, that is sure to enrage others, is that the screen, keyboard, and pretty much everything on the surface of the laptop is a extreme fingerprint magnet. While I don't mind it as long as it doesn't get on the screen, it will annoy some I'm sure. Overall, 4/5.

EDIT: I little nitpick I have is that there is no cap locks indicator. I usually don't mind this, but it does get annoying somethimes.

Gaming: The graphic card, the Nvidia 630m 1gig is a good (not great) graphic card that should be able to play most games at med/high. Below are the fps scores I've got playing games

1. Minecraft: Easily 60-120 fps, everything max, I installed optifine and some hd texture packs and still got around 60-100 fps. I tried to lag that game in Creative Mode, I blew up 100 plus tnt, had four Wither Bosses out, and it still maintained 40+ fps. Don't believe rumors that you can't install this game on Windows 8, I've been playing this game without any issues thus far, will update otherwise.

2: Feed the Beast: Around 40-60 on max. Feed the beast is a collection (60) mods for minecraft that work simultaneously.

2. Planteside 2: Around 20-40 fps on Medium; average 30. It works great while playing, I didn't try on high, and don't except it to work well. But it's still fun playing on Medium.

3. Torchlight 1: Steady 60 fps.

4. Transformers: War For Cybertron: Steady 30 fps on high, even on multiplayer.

5. Arkham Asylum: 20-30 on max.

6. Rayman Origins: Easily playable on 720p.

7. DCUO: Hovers around 30 on a mix of med. and high settings.

8. Lord of the Rings Online: Do not know the exact fps, but ran fairly smoothly on med-high.

9. Realm of the Mad God: Easily playable in 720p.

I don't have that many games installed as I am a little short on money, but with each new game I get, I will update this review. Overall: 4/5

Heat: This is a downside for me. The vent that sucks in air and circulates it around the laptop is on the bottom of the laptop, right where your leg will be if it is on your lap! This results in putting the laptop in an odd position on your lap if your gaming. I did not realize this at first while I was playing transformers and was blocking air circulation while playing. This resulted in temps reaching 65-70 C; really hot. But after I positioned to increase airflow It kept relatively cool (for gaming) at 50-60 C. You won't notice the heat too much, however, if your watching a video or surfing the web. Overall: 3/5.

Internet connectivity: Here is where the laptop's biggest flaw is. Windows 8 will NOT connect to a WEP network on a shared key, I did not realize this and could not connect to the home network! It was a huge pain in the side to change from a WEP to a WPA-PSK network, too which my laptop connected fairly well, I still get random dropouts sometimes, but all our devices in the house are experiencing the same problem too. We still don't know the problem with it yet and hopefully it will be resolved soon. 2/5

So, if you want a cheap laptop that can play games relatively well, get this one as it has one of the cheapest price/performance ratio I've seen on amazon. While not prefect, a little heavy, a finger print magnet, and gets a little hot while gaming, and it doesn't to a WEP network on shared key, I'm quite happy with my purchase.

My old faithful home-built tower PC finally stopped working the week of Thanksgiving, which conveniently worked out for some Cyber Monday shopping. Aside from the automatic star from my wife for any laptop that allowed me to stop borrowing hers, I have been pleasantly surprised with this computer.

The i5 processor has blown through installing all my old programs. This has been one of the fastest re-setups I have had in a while. I ran through a batch of video rendering and compression to give it a good test run. I knew that it should run much faster than my old single core system, but I had a reduction in runtime of around 70%, which was more than I was expecting.

My days of hardcore gaming have passed, but I still play around every week or so. The system had no trouble running Civilization V and Neopolian: Total War at close to max video settings. I did get some long processing time on the larger maps for CivV, but I think that is to be expected. Good screen size, average screen resolution. The dedicated video card was a big plus when I bought this system, and it worked well for the games I have. I would recommend this as a great budget systems for games or for a gamer who wants to play the old games he has laying around.

Not overly heavy at 5 lbs. I like the full size keyboard with a numpad, again great for gaming. I have not had the problems that the other reviews have had with the touchpad, but I use a wireless mouse most of the time. Speakers have good volume and quality for built in speakers. Not a lot of bloatware pre-installed like a lot of systems I have bought. Wildtangent had to go but some of the others actually look useful.

I could not end this review without talking about Windows 8. The jury is still out for me, and since I have a license for Win7 that is not being used, I may revert. But I am going to give it some more time first. The Start tile screen freaked me out at first, but once I got to the desktop tile I felt much better. Once there everything runs pretty normally. For all those on the fence because this laptop has Win8, the old desktop look and feel is still there if you want it to be. Do not let that hold you back if you like the rest of the specs.

This is my second Acer laptop. I have had three HPs, a Toshiba, a Dell and a Sony. My past Acer has been reliable as most of the laptops I have owned and much better than the year my Dell ran before the motherboard blew. I will have to update later if any problems develop on this one.

I used to have an Acer Aspire 7750 but it was stolen recently. So I had to search for a replacement. This is the 4th laptop I'm buying from Acer since I found it extremely reliable and affordable.

It was a bargain to find a laptop with a 1GB dedicated graphics card at this price range. I use the laptop for college work and some occasional gaming. The boot times were reasonable and applications ran quite smoothly. World of Warcraft ran at 45 fps on medium settings.

However there are a couple of problems,

First, the panels are a fingerprint magnet.

The touchpad is extremely sensitive. It is a pain to type sometimes because if the palm touches the pad, the cursor moves somewhere else and you'll have to correct it a lot.

Also, whenever I bring the laptop out of standby mode, I lose sound even though the volume control shows that sound is playing. A reboot/ hibernation fixes that problem.

The battery lasts around 4 hrs with watching movies and browsing the net.

Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 2 TB (2 x 1TB) Network Storage Cloud Edition 35427

This StorCenter is an interesting device for those looking to enter the world of NAS, but certainly will disappoint advanced users: some features simply don't work as expected.

From the physical point of view, the StorCenter ix2 is quite compact, and resembles a small surge protector fits in any corner. Not the quietest: the coling fan breaks the office's silence, and the internal disks also clacks when accessed not much to bother. What really worries me is the temperature it operates: always above 55°C, too hot to handle. With all this heat, my data would be safe?

Throughput is a strong point: operating in Gigabit Ethernet, I was able to read/write data at 21MB/s rate, similar to those obtained using a local disk. However, speed relies on a Gigabit network: you may need to change router, network cards and cables to escape the 100Mbps Fast Ethernet limit, today's standard in most home and office.

In software, StorCenter has its main weakness: first of all, firmware sits on its internal discs. It takes time to load, and any failure of the disks makes it unusable. Same logic applies to a possible capacity expansion: if you want to replace the original disks with larger capacity ones, say your StorCenter goodbye unless if you transport the firmware from original disk to the new ones, using one of those cryptic and endless tutorials available on the Internet.

The StorCenter offers a huge list of interesting features, but all of them are poorly implemented, frustrating most demanding users. Some promises that StorCenter ix2-200 don't deliver:

DLNA Media server: after successfully setting media folders, its scan was done incompletely. The music and photos don't appear on items list, there's no log of problems encountered during the scanning process. Couldn't see any photos or music on DLNA devices nor on the computer or television;

SNMP monitoring: the StorCenter's SNMPv3 implementation is NOT documented there are no details of monitorable variables and events, and Iomega software doesn't allow to monitor device status via SNMP. In other words, SNMPv3 is a feature that Iomega says thatexist, but no one not even the product support knows how to use it;

UPS monitoring: StorCenter has UPS USB monitoring, and ok, it works. The problem is that other network devices are not warned when the UPS is about to shut down. StorCenter takes possession of the UPS signal, and don't propagate it to the network. It may even be possible to obtain this information via StorCenter's SNMP, but how cam I do this? There's no SNMP documentation!

Torrent and P2P networks: this is an almost unusable feature. You can't see the percentage of completed downloads, you can't get the list of connected peers, there's no DHT support, there's no secure Torrent connections (preventing Torrent detection by ISPs), there's no way to prioritize downloads, there's no way to inhibit some unwanted file downloads... In short, if you expect a simple and powerful interface like uTorrent on StorCenter firmware, forget about it.

Remote Access Tools: StorCenter's web interface is heavy and loads slowly manage it using 3G connections requires patience. The file management tool is inexplicably poor: there's only a view/explore tool available, where you can just download and upload files, delete files and create folders you can't perform basic tasks such as renaming files and folders or moving/copying files between folders.

Management Tools: it's hard to believe that you can't defragment volumes, check the discs health after accidental or unscheduled shutdowns, manage how many and which users are currently connected, where they come from (if they are local or remote connections), its active network connections, the read/write activity per task or user (the discs spin, spin and you don't know who is doing what), among others. You are blind all the time.

Copy Jobs: if you have a NTFS-compressed USB drive and want to copy data from it using firmware copyjob feature, be assured that your target files will be corrupted: the StorCenter doesn't make decompression during copy, and data recorded in its internal storage will be unusable. When the source data comes from compressed NTFS discs, copy them always from a Windows computer file sharing, and never, ever, by using the copyjob.

Well, there are many more serious flaws in the StorCenter's software to tell, but I think they're only suitable for more advanced users. If you want a NAS device to backup your files, easy to use and fast read/write speeds, buy it, worth the price. But if you, like me, want to go deeper into NAS world and need good, efficient and complete firmware solution, spend a little more and find a more bulky equipment.

I had very high hopes for this device. I've had good luck with Iomega products in the past, but this has turned out to be one of the worst purchases I've made in a long time. The sad thing is that I read reviews of this that were not good for many of the same reasons Im going to talk about. But I mistakenly thought that those bad reviews were all by people who didn't know what they were doing. I was wrong.

Everything about this looks good on paper, and when you open the box it looks and feels well made. The problems start when you want it to do what you bought it for.

This is, without a doubt, both the slowest and the noisiest hard drive I've ever owned. Did you like the 80's? Well, then you'll be presently surprised when you discover that this transfers data at the speed of an old CD-Rom. I mean a really old CD-Rom.

And the noise. I have no idea what this thing is doing, but it runs constantly. All day. All night. And it sounds like you hear every bit being written. I have set it to have the drives spin down after 30 minutes of inactivity. It still runs. It runs when every device in the house is off. It literally runs 24/7/365. If you are planning on putting this in your bedroom, or within 50 feet of your bedroom say goodbye to any chance of getting a full nights sleep.

And because of this insane problem, again what it could possibly be doing is beyond me, I have no faith whatsoever that this is a reliable product. The running/noise problem is not only annoying, but as far as Im concerned this thing is running as fast as it can towards a catastrophic drive failure.

I will never buy another drive from Iomega. A company that puts out a product this flawed will not be supported by me.

Summary:

A seemingly simple implementation became quite buggy, with a frighteningly hot device, that was noisy with loud grinding noises, incapable of accepting an external USB drive without locking up, and the proprietary connecting software was incapable of connecting to the device.

System configurations tested:

Windows 7 64 bit; Windows 7 32 bit; connected to a U-Verse router; several different external USB hard drives, including USB powered and AC powered; Chrome, Firefox, and IE browsers; latest versions of Iomega Storage Manager and firmware; appropriate port forwarded.

Review:

The Iomega ix2-200 4TB seemed promising, with two solid hard drives, a mostly metal case, USB connection, actual buttons on the device, and a simple interface. However, upon receiving the device, I was unable to access the drive from the network. After switching from the included cable to one that I have owned for almost a decade that doesn't even have prongs to hold it in place anymore, the ix2 connected right up.

Initially, it went okay, with setting up the device going smoothly, access via Windows Explorer occurring quickly with the Iomega Storage Manager mapping the various shares directly. The registering of the Cloud went quickly as well.

Upon connecting USB hard drives, however, the device would lock up and become unresponsive to the front panel buttons, including not being able to turn off by pressing and holding the button. Obviously, then, the 'QuikTransfer' function flatly failed. I tried three other drives, one AC powered and two USB powered, and all resulted in it locking up eventually. Occasionally, it would recognize a drive long enough to search it via the web interface or Windows Explorer, but without fail it would revert to becoming completely unresponsive to anything except pinging (which was just fine for some reason), but would not respond to its own buttons, the web interface, or Windows Explorer. The only option, after leaving it sit for a day incase it was unresponsive because it was rebuilding data or something, was to unplug it. I had to do this several times.

Although the Cloud idea sounds promising, the needing to use the Iomega Storage Manager is a little frustrating, but free and more or less expected. The other option that they advertise requires a subscription after the first year. However, the ix2 only responded outside of my network once, and would not connect again, whether I reinstalled the software, restarted my computer, or even wiped the entire device clean. No luck.

I also had to completely reconfigure Windows' networking settings to get it to access the device. No matter what configuration of user names and passwords I entered, whether the ix2 security was enabled or not, I could not access them through the Network Places; if the drives were already mapped it would usually still connect to those, as well as the web interface. Poor implementation of security compatibility in my opinion. Sometimes, even if the ix2 drives were mapped, they would stop being responsive unless I went into the web interface and logged in. The Storage Manager software was no help, and Windows credentials were useless.

The Storage Manager software was also very perplexing. It would state the device was unavailable, then I would force it to find it; other times it would say the Cloud Service tab was simply 'Disabled' in the middle of the screen; other times it would try to connect and ask me for credentials that I had saved, despite the fact that the downloaded software was specifically from the invitation I sent myself from the cloud, which has a custom access code immediately available to it; finally, it would give me an XML-RPC error that was nowhere to be found on Iomega's site. Before I gave up, it changed the icon from an ix2 to some strange squiggle and a blob... No useful functionality.

The highest temperature I recorded was 132 F, and the fan status still said 0 RPM. The device was obviously warm to the touch externally.

The Twonky media server configured itself despite not installing it, which is quite disturbing.

After trying lots of iterations of troubleshooting (I have seven pages of paragraphs and small screen snip-its describing a number of steps I took to see if it was my computer, my set up, my USB drives, etc...), I did the secure overwriting of data, which took approximately 27 hours to complete, packed it up and sent it back.

Be aware that the customer service is limited to week day hours, and after hours or after the warranty expires you have to pay them $50 to even ask about your device. There is a user forum, that I recommend potential buyers view to see the other potential problems awaiting you with this device, that Iomega staff occasionally will respond to, but there is no email correspondence that I could find. The Iomega responses on the forum are few and far between, and seemed to often simply ask basic troubleshooting questions rather than proactively offering suggestions under various scenarios (eg: rather than asking "Does your work use a proxy?" they should state potential ways to work around this limitation, or declare that your device will not work through the proxy, instead of wasting time with a feudal back-and-forth in a forum).

Take home message:

It seems that if all I wanted it for was in-network storage, without any use of the 'QuikTransfer' it seems like it might be a decent device. However, I paid for a 'Personal Cloud' with USB transferring capability, and this was not it.

When I read the characteristics of this product, I thought it would be great.

The first months, everything worked ok. Files and music there was very comfortable.

But then, when I requested more from the unit, I started to see its performance.

Slow... Really slow! Not a great unit for video.

And failures! I already had one hdd failure. I got a hdd replacement (The customer service agent was good. The problem is that I had to wait more than 4 weeks for the disk replacement. Maybe because of problems with argentinian customs... But they didn't had spare discs here for this situation... That's bad).

Now I have a second failure... Let's see. That's not a good thing for a device where you have so much valuable things!

I have been quite pleased with this item it works as advertised, except I haven't yet been able to set it up for remote access (though this may be something to do with my PC setup).

One cirticism is that the disc drives are very noisy when reading/writing. Much noisier than any other drive in the house. I'm not sure if this is a function of the size of the drives, but you would definitely have to think about where you put the Storcenter.

Pepper Pad 3 Handheld Web Computer (Black)

Pros far outweight the cons.

Device is pitched as "a/v streaming tablet" for kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc. It MORE than delivers on this promise. Email and some bluetooth support is currently lacking (only wireless mouse/keybd currently supported) but this will be fixed soon.

Skype is coming in next few months. Big win there.

Hardware feature:

1. 2-way infrared learning remote.

It's now my primary remote control. Layout are fairly editable but not where it s/be...this is easily fixable though. Unlike what other reviews stated...it is easy to incorporate support for new devices...you can download remote control config files from lirc.org.

2. Backlit keypad

Nice for being in bed at night.

3. d-pad and thumbwheel

Absolutely best way to scroll/page thru sites.

4. 2xUSB, 1xNTSC A/V out

An MMC/SD would be nice...but expandability is there already.

5. 20GB HD and 256MB RAM

As an engr geek...I would like to see more...but for a/v streaming and other tasks this is totally adequate.

6. i386 compatible

This means you can just download RedHat FC4 i386 binaries and they just work. They may not integrate with desktop perfectly...but works great nonetheless.

Software features:

1. Streams darn near EVERY video/audio format. Only esoteric realplayer sites don't work...yet. Everything else (Sirius Satellite, Shoutcast) work flawlessly.

2. Built-in email sucks...but I easily downloaded Thunderbird and it is now where I want it to be.

3. Desktop (tabbed folder) paradigm needs some development...but it is fine for intended tasks (streaming a/v).

4. Support for Java 1.5!! This only means something to geeks and those wanting to stream from sites which have applets (Sirius Satellite). As a java developer...this is just too cool. First time J2SE is on pda form factor.

This is an awesome device that I've been using daily since purchase. I have since CANCELLED my several newspaper subscriptions as I now read/stream from pad....this saves me just under $1K yearly for subscriptions.

The device is so versatile and perfectly sized...you will soon want to take it in car with you and mount it on dash with bluetooth gps, etc. With enhanced bt support coming...you'll soon be doing just that!

I had been looking for the past year for *exactly* this set of features in a handheld computer, but always came up short. This marvelous little powerhouse has everything. Wifi g, bluetooth 2.0, very usable thumb QWERTY keyboard, 20gig HD...and all this in a terrific form factor. Nice size, feels great in the hand, it's only two lbs. And it is affordable, no less.

There are several apps I would like to see (sketch/digital ink...pleasePLEASE, Office-type suite, VOIP, etc.), but I am guessing these will be developed before long.

Biggest surprise was how much I enjoy the pre-installed ebook reader. I downloaded Bob Woodward's new book, which worked like a charm, and have been enjoying reading it at home and, propped on its stand, in coffee shops all over Manhattan. Btw, expect to be interrupted when you do as it is quite the head turner. Almost as good as walking your dog for meeting new people here in NYC.

No surprise was how much I enjoy playing with it on the couch, in bed, sitting on the terrace, etc. It is so much nicer than even my three pound, 8 x 11" Tablet PC. Two lbs is soooo much nicer than three. And the scroll wheel is fabulous, too. And, oh, I almost forgot, the remote controller is excellent. You can set up any combination of video and audio equipment (TV, dvd players, Tivo) in about two minutes and, snap, it just works. And with no lag at all. Touch the pen to the screen and your Tivo chirps back instantly.

FYI, I met several of the top people from the Company at the recent Digital Life Conference. Wonderful folks who seem to love what they do. And they were *more* than helpful. Jon M must have spent close to an hour talking with my boyfriend and me. All in all, great effort, guys!

I am not surprised at all that it is backordered.

I've had my pepper pad a little over a month now. Some of the other reviewers I read had issues with the software being unstable. I have not had any of those problems. I've downloaded 2 software updates so far and they have worked perfectly. The unit's wireless Ethernet connects without a hitch both at home and at my work's wireless routers. It took about 10 minutes to have the unit learn my 15 year old televisions remote.

Pepper pads pluses:

1. Nice usable screen for web surfing.

2. Good software applications for watching Utube, listening to internet radio, operating several IR remotes, reading e-books and surfing the Web.

3. Well designed unit which will sit nicely on your lap or coffee table. It's easy to hold. The unit feels solid.

4. The split illuminated keyboard is much more useful than using an on screen keyboard. I have plugged in a USB key board and it worked perfectly.

5. Comes out of sleep mode pretty fast. I have crashed it a couple of times but it has always recovered "gracefully" meaning that I did not have to re-boot the unit several times.

Minuses:

1. While the HAT switch and scroller work fine, they feel cheap.

2. Battery will last about 2 hours of continuous use. It should be replaceable.

3. The pepper applications that come with the unit have very small icons. The stylus is a little awkward to use. If they could make the icons a little bigger you could just use your fingers.

4. In the TV guide application, I have to tap the "down arrow" several times to get the unit to load the next page.

5. The games that come with the unit are pretty lame.

If you're looking for a simple to use web pad that can operate your AV gear and allow you to surf the web from your couch the pepper pad's a great product. It does require some fiddling around with to work for you, but it's not complicated. I think the pepper applications are pretty stable overall, but they could use some more "usability" in the design of the on-screen controls. If Pepper can make a decent video conferencing application, that would be useful.

I had some high hopes for this product. To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. My main goal was to have a quick booting web device that could allow me to read TV listings and possibly control my A/V equipment. I also wanted The ability to read PDFs and Word documents.

When I tried to load up a MS-Word document, I got an error message that there were no usable local apps installed and that I'd have to use an online reader if I want to read MS-Word files. The software that comes installed for light word processing only handles plain text and rich text files.

Which leads me to the WiFi. I was going through hell trying to get the PP3 to see my access point and even when it could see the AP, it had problems getting an IP address. Eventually I connected OK, but as soon as I put the PP3 into sleep mode and turn it on again, I ran into the same connection problem all over again. I notified Pepper of my troubles and even sent them my log files. Apparently there is a problem with the PepperLinux wireless driver. Pepper Support's "solution" to my issue is to wait for their next OS update. In the meantime if I want to connect reliably to my router is a gamble, sometimes I connect...most times I don't.

When my PepperPad does connect, it seems to load web pages at a decent speed. Most websites seem to load correctly. But the browser is a little slow with websites that use alot of java programming and XML.

The PepperPad also has a version of AOL & MSN instant messaging, so you can IM people from your couch or bathroom. For some reason the IM sound effects on my PP3 are not working, I've checked the settings and volume and have notified Pepper support of the issue. So far my requests for support have gone un-answered.

The Bluetooth feature is very, very limited. Only keyboards & mice are supported at this time. You cannot perform file transfers or connect to your PC or cell phone.

The PP3 probably should have left out the built-in camera, the resolution isn't too good and the lens is way too close to the user. The camera is also fixed and cannot be adjusted or focused. In order to get my face in the frame, I have to hold the PP3 completely at arms length. I'm guessing that they added the camera for future video conferencing use, as it stands now the camera would be very inconvenient to use.

The IR remote control app that is included does allow for IR learning and macros. But unfortunately the macros cannot be scheduled to run at specific times. Also this is not a very handy device to replace your remote control due to the slow wake from suspend times. Assuming that the PP3 is in suspend mode, the idea of waiting 10 seconds before you can use your remote is a tremendous pain. In addition the layout of the buttons on the PepperPad cannot be edited and personal A/V icons are non-existent.

The PepperPad is able to sync wirelessly to your PC and files can be transferred back and forth. But the sync feature is only capable of doing full directory cloning. There is no incremental or differential synching. If you're copying over files, the software will re-copy existing files over again. If you have lots of files then this will be a unnecessarily long process. And if you have existing files on the PepperPad which don't exist on the Desktop during a sync, your existing PepperPad files will be overwritten!

One of the few things that the PepperPad 3 can do well is to play video and music files. Most of the major codecs like WMV, DivX, MP3 and WAV are supported and the playback quality is good.

Overall the PepperPad 3 isn't nearly as nice as I thought it would be. The Pepper Company's lack of technical support only adds insult to injury. If I had a functional & dependable WiFi I could overlook the PepperPad's shortcomings. But WiFi is the heart of this device. Without it the PepperPad is just a nice looking paperweight. It looks like the company tried to do many things instead of concentrating on a few important features. The included software is badly written and the apps offer mediocre features and performance. Unless you are very into Linux I don't recommend this device. Without a knowledge of the Linux OS and commands you won't be able to install apps on your own or do power user configurations.

HP 4 GB Class 4 microSDHC Flash Memory Card L1882A-EF

I am using HP 8 GB Class 4 microSDHC Flash Memory Card (L1885A-EF) in my BlackBerry 8900. The card was immediately recognized by the BlackBerry, formatting went without a problem, and the card functions properly. BlackBerry sees 7.3GB of available memory on the card.

This card is exactly what I wanted.

HP's 8GB microSDHC card was one of the better buys at the time of this review, as far as price/performance/capacity is concerned. In my case, it fulfills the task assigned stores a large number of songs for the SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 2 GB MP3 Player that accepts microSDHC cards. However, its relatively low data transfer speed may NOT make it a good pick if the intended use was in a camera that takes 'rapid fire' shots.

PERFORMANCE

I would like to note that I did not test the card with a camera but its stated 'Class 4' speed class, which is the equivalent of a 26x speed rating should guarantee a MINIMUM of 4MB/s more than enough when it comes to music playback.

Unlike the 'x' ratings, the speed class ratings are NOT certified by an independent body so, more or less, you will have to decide whether you trust the card's maker HP is quite a reputable brand and it so happens that I DID test the card myself. I found that I could copy 2 GB worth of songs in about 6-7 minutes. This is about 4-5MB/s for writing on the card for the first time, indicating that the Class 4/26x claim is honest. This is very good performance for a 'class 4' given that the card was inserted into an 'full' SDHC card adapter which, in turn, was inserted into a USB card reader.

Practically, if you are going to use this card in a camera, depending on the quality of the pics you are taking, you may or may not be happy with its performance. At 12 megapixels, a 100% quality JPG would produce a 2-3 MB or loarger file so, without even counting the overhead, your camera will spend about half second, possibly more to write to the card which may or may not be in line with your own expectation. For better performance, look for a higher 'class' number 133x/Class 20, for example, should support 20 MB/s or writing up to 10 12-megapixel JPG photo files per second.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES/CONCERNS

The card comes with a 'full' SDHC adapter. This is very important, especially if you need to interface with a computer. In my case, I am inserting the microSDHC into the included SDHC adapter which, in turn, goes into a USB card reader I used the one that came with the Transcend 16 GB Class 2 SDHC Flash Memory Card with USB Card Reader TS16GSDHC2-P2.

The card comes formatted as FAT32 and my Windows 7 computer was able to write to it and read from it without difficulty. If, for whatever reason, FAT32 is not what you need, you should be able to format it under Windows/Vista, Mac or Unix/Linux to whatever you may need. The MP3 player was able to read the card as formatted without any issues.

Not ALL cameras support FAT32. Older cameras may only be aware of FAT16 and can't see any card larger that 4GB. If in doubt, check with the manufacturer or maybe read your camera's reviews at Amazon.

Related to the above anyone who may have a device meant to use SD cards should be aware that SDHC may not work with it so it's better to ask the maker.

While the SDHC interface is provided, I would go for a full-size SDHC card if that's what my gadget accepted. You can use the card with the adapter but why bother. The microSDHC being so small and fragile, why risk losing it or breaking it?

RATING

This is a honestly rated Class 4 card. It works very well for me in my MP3 player but I'd look for a faster card if I needed a card for a camera or a camcorder. Class 4, as I explained, means relatively SLOW so, if blazing-fast write speed is not an issue, this is probably what you need given the price and the maker's reputation by the way, the card is manufactured in Taiwan.

For what it is, the card deserves 5 stars.

This case seems well made and like it would do a good job, however IT IS NO LONGER DESIGNED FOR THE TF300. I ordered this case along with screens protectors from this company and received them in a timely manner. However, both the case and screen protectors were clearly labeled "TF700". I emailed customer service and they responded the next business day but they didn't understand what the problem was. After another email to them clarifying that I needed the correct screen protectors AND case sent to me, I was told that:

"The case you've recieved [sic] for the TF700 is in fact the correct case we currently offer for the TF300. Unfortunately, we no longer carry a case specifically for the TF300. The case we offer is compatiable [sic] for both the TF300 and TF700, and will provide the same protection to either case.

As anyone who has compared the TF300 to the TF700 will know, these tablets do NOT have the same dimensions. The 300 is both wider and thicker than the 700. When I replied to "Roxy" and relayed this information I also asked to be contacted by someone else in management of the company in order to get clarification on why this case was being advertised for the wrong device. The reply was that they are happy to give me my money back once I return it and I was never contacted by anyone else.

Just so you know, I tried fitting my TF300 into the case as they claim it will. It doesn't. It can be forced into the side and corner clips, but only with a lot of force. The cover will NOT close flat, and the clasp, if forced to snap shut as it is designed, actually caused enough stress on the plastic body of the tablet to separate it from the screen around the edge!

So if you have a TF700, this might work fine for you, but if you are looking for a TF300 case this isn't it.

You can force an tf300t in the case, kinda defeats the purpose though. I bough this because it said it was for the tf300t if you get it in it looks ok and protects it well.

Looks soooo much nicer than the stupid kind everyone has with elastic straps on the corners. This one snaps perfectly in place, holding the tablet snugly. The fit an finish are very premium. Much more than the generic Chinese cases I've tried. It's worth the couple bucks extra just for the fit and finish. The tabs that hold it in place leave the entire face exposed instead of hiding the bezel like most leather cases. It's nice and lush feeling with a thick, firm, yet yeilding cover that feels great in the hand. The only downside is that it doubles the weight of the tablet, but it's totally worth it.

Well designed, but very, very tight fit on my ASUS 300T...strange, STRONG smell of some type of glue was annoying. IT was hard to close the cover by forcing the snap over the edge of the tablet. So much so that I thought it might damage it. After a while it became easier to close. At first you may have to push the edge of the cover from the opposite edge toward the snap to make it go over the tablet edge. Functions as advertised, but the 2 "odd" points reduced what would have been a 5 star rating.

Black Wireless 2.4GHz Optical Hand-Held USB Trackball Mouse For Laptop PC

Works pretty well, the extra mouse function is a bit unnecessary, but neat. The trackball tends to skip a bit depending on how you hold it, and it doesn't work well left-handed, since the mouse bottom part is on that side. I would have preferred if it had someway to check the battery, and maybe a storage slot for the usb wireless receiver, but for 20 odd bucks, i can deal with a few minor design oversights. Otherwise, it's comfortable and easy to use. The drivers installed automatically on both the computers I've used it with so far, no problems there. It does have an obnoxious green flashing LED when it's charging though. Overall I would recommend it, though I've only had it a few days, so we'll see how the durability goes.

I bought this because I spend most of my day working on a computer and I started having problems with my wrist due to mousing. No matter what kind of mouse or trackball I used (and I tried SEVERAL), I still had some amount of pain in my wrist. Well wrist pain is inevitable if you sit at a computer all day--it's unhealthy and unnatural (as Peter Gibbons said, "Human beings were not meant to sit in little boxes all day"), but it pays the bills. Dammit.

So I thought I could reduce the problem if I found something that didn't need to rest on a flat surface. I wasn't even sure if something like this existed until I started looking for it on Amazon. (What can't you find on Amazon?)

Anyway, it works great overall--I've been using it for a few days. It's not great for high-precision work, so I use it in conjunction with a stationary trackball. When using the scroll wheel, the screen will jump unexpectedly from time to time, but it's not a huge problem.

The wireless USB antenna is tiny, which I like because there's less chance for me to break it.

I wish they made a left handed version, but otherwise I have no complaints.

Been looking for something like this for years. Came close to pulling the trigger on several similar products over that time but never did because they just didn't look good enough. Mouse arrived within a few days of placing the order and worked immediately upon plugging it in. Wireless USB hub is very small (wish there was a storage place for it on the mouse: hope I don't lose it) and unobtrusive. Mouse itself is just about the right size and shape. (for right handers)

The only things that I would improve upon if I had my way: bluetooth, scroll wheel between the left and right mouse buttons, and a tighter track ball. The scroll wheel behind the ball forces me to slightly adjust my grip to use it (not too bad, just nitpicking), and (due to the nature of track balls) the ball becomes slightly unseated when tipped beyond 45 degrees (but still usable). Once again not really a big deal.

All in all a very good product... especially for the money.

For the price, this is a great little mouse. Had my first one about 7 months, until my 6 year old decided to throw it (not as bad as it sounds. Logitech mice would likely have stood up to it). I bought this mouse for use with Rosetta Stone language software while sitting on the sofa. I soon realized I could use this while walking on my treadmill. Worked beautifully. Rosetta Stone is almost entirely point and click and accuracy is not a major issue. As other reviewers have said, the mouse does have some minor accuracy issues with the trackball and the scroll wheel. The trackball has a fair amount of play and the mouse feels cheaply made. If Logitech were to come out with a similar mouse, I would switch. As long as they keep the price reasonable. If the design had any reputable competition, I probably would drop my rating. I gave it four stars, because it does what is advertised, is fairly comfortable, and the price is accepatble.

I ordered one of these 2 months before they were ready to ship. I had been looking for something like this for at least two years to take with me to the library to scan references. I am 64 and have problems with the nerves in my hands that make my handwriting degenerate quickly and I hate standing in line for the scanner when I could be doing more research. My Flip-Pal takes care of that and more. I scan the references, take them home and put them into the computer with the micro card, and then... the trick ... I run it through my OCR program, and it's typed automatically into my file. With a little comparative editing, I'm done.

It is possible to use the wand scanner in a similar fashion. I have one, I've compared them.

The Flip-Pal allows you to see what you are scanning. The Wand doesn't.

The wand type will do an entire letter size sheet at once. The Flip-Pal only scans 1/3 to 1/2 a page at a time, but you can fix that in the computer.

The Flip-Pal has a little screen that lets you see that you got a good scan. The wand type doesn't and lets you go home thinking you have a load of material only to find that much of it is bad.

The Flip-Pal scans every time, just like a big scanner. The wand type sometimes has to be used several times just to get one to work.

I found the wand frustrating and have found the Flip-Pal a joy.

And it has all those other uses, too. And Pictures that aren't distorted. I'm quitting. I would be here all night telling you how great it is.

I got my flip-pal scanner last week in the first shipment of this wonderful new product! I have been using it this week while on a visit to out of state family. I have been able to scan over 100 of old, old family photos in less than an hour while they were still in the frames and matting! It is so fast and easy I could not believe it. The scanner is light and portable and fits easily in my airline carry on. This scanner has allowed me to save and share family photos that would otherwise be lost to most of the family. I am thrilled with this product that can also perform normal scanning and can scan 3D items too.

I read several reviews of the Flip-Pal on various sites. I started scanning old photos as soon as it arrived and the FlipPal is as easy and as great as everyone said it was. My dad was a tail gunner in England in WW2 and kept a mission diary. I am putting together a book of his experiences by incorporating his photos with his text. Many of the pictures were faded, but the color restore feature made them much easier to see. The "stitch" feature is amazing. By making several scans of a large photo, the easy to use program "stitches" them together seamlessly. It helps to leave a good size border around the multiple scans so it makes a crisp edge on the final picture. I will watch to see if this company makes any other products in the future because this one is amazing.

I saw the info on this in August at a Genealogy conference and wanted one immediately. I finally talked myself into waiting to see what the reviews were and all the "kinks" were worked out. All the reviews I read, both here and in other places were nothing but positive so I decided to take the plunge!

I LOVE that the Flip-Pal is ready to go right out of the box! I was scanning within a minute of opening the package! I had 3 albums of pictures that I had attempted to scan at various times over the past couple of years but gave up because it was SO TIME CONSUMING--take them out of the album, line them up on the scanner (3-4 at a time), wait for them to scan, open the file up in Photoshop, align them properly, crop, name and save them, rinse and repeat! UGH! With the Flip-Pal, ALL I had to do was take off the cover, flip the scanner over onto the album, hit the button, and repeat for the next picture!

The included USB adapter was a lifesaver I didn't even know I needed! Since I mainly shoot with an SLR that takes Compact Flash cards, I had forgotten that my SD card reader had stopped working. So after scanning all of my albums I went to load the pictures onto the computer and realized that I couldn't--I didn't have a working reader. JUST before I panicked, I suddenly remembered the little usb drive that I had so casually tossed aside when I opened the Flip-Pal--DUH! I was back in business in no time!

I have used the stitch program on a 16x20 photograph that I scanned and it worked EXACTLY as promised! Since I have Photoshop, I will probably use its stitch function instead, but its nice to know that the included program works well (and I can use it when I'm away from home on someone else's computer).

I have "sold" 3 of these to friends and family already and will continue to toot the Flip-Pal horn! I'm a shopper and this is my BEST PURCHASE in quite awhile! I hope they make a larger version soon!

I bought this because I wanted to scan many old family photos--and discovered that I would have to take them out of their mattes and frames in order to avoid very blurry images--and that wasn't possible with archivally framed pictures. This is because the photo has to be right next to the scanner glass. Any distance and you get a blurry scan. (This was confirmed by the customer service e-mail). I did use it on a couple of newspaper clippings and it did an OK job but I got a better, clearer image with my little digital camera. There may be good uses for this--evidently other reviewers have been happy. I agree that the case seems a bit light-weight. I could read the memory chip with the USB device provided. I did get a couple of fast responses from customer service which bodes well for frequent users of this little scanner. I'll carry this to archives and similar collections and hope that it pays its way eventually.
