Ivation Portable Color & Mono Handheld Scanner - BLACK

Ivation Portable Color & Mono Handheld Scanner - BLACKThis is a handheld scanner where you have to control the speed of the scan as well control the direction of the scan. One of the good things about this scanner is that you can add a micro flash card to this scanner so that it can basically be used anywhere. I've tried it with the cord and the cord isn't long enough to scan a book freely but that's fine. Also, when you have the cord connected while scanning it gets in the way and you can't seem to get too close to the edge. So getting a memory card is very well worth it.

The weight of the item is fine and I like the fact that it's small enough to carry around in your backpack or something. I don't do that often but I'm glad I have that option. The one the thing that I noticed was oddly difficult for me was to put the batteries in. It's no one's fault but my own. I think I'm just starting to get a little idiotic now. Anyways, the quality is great as long as your keep the scan on a straight path. If you move the scanner then it will show up wiggly and smear the scan.

The batteries last pretty long. I've used it for about 1 month and haven't found the need to change the batteries yet. It's a great device and perfect for any application. I received this item for an honest review.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)It's a fairly simple device. Simply connect the USB to Micro USB connector cable to your computer, set up the software to your computer and fill in any software questions, such as color, resolution number, etc.

The unit runs on 3 (AAA) batteries that supply plenty of charge for the scanning light. It also needs a micro USB card (which is not included). Get at least a 2 GB micro USB card. The buttons are also very simple. There are tiny indicators for battery charge level, color vs. B/W, resolution (up to 900 'dpi'), and the numbers of pictures scanned and whether the scanner is connected to the computer. The secret to scanning is to hold the item to be scanned flat and to slowly go over the document in a straight manner. If you swerve, you may get a blurred area. If you hit a bump in the surface, you may get a shadowed area.

After scanning, simply stop the scanner, plug the USB cable into your computer and download your images. At maximum scanning 'dpi', it takes about 10 seconds of steady scanning. If you want a lower 'dpi' quality, it takes even less time. You can also go as low as a one-two second scan if you choose `monochrome'. Character recognition on type is very good (OCR).

This scanner is lightweight, small and handy if you travel and need to scan documents, legal letters, news-ads or just photos or drawings when away from your home. It's not perfect, but for the average user, it's a bargain. Kit comes with scanner, slip-on black cloth case, 3 (AAA) batteries, "magicscan OCR software" and directions (the directions are very small print). After a few tries, you'll get the ease of it all. It may be a bit surprising but I think a large variety of people could use out of a portable scanner. As a parent it is very useful for scanning art projects or scrap booking. Students can use it for copying from books or notes at a library. In business, it can be a handy tool for anyone who is doing audits. Finally, someone who collects recipes ay find it useful to use a portable scanner to get a *perfect* copy of a recipe.

The Ivation Portable Scanner is especially handy because it is both small and easy to use. I was able to begin scanning almost immediately (although you will need to have an extra micro SD memory card handy).

Notes-

Uses 3 AAA batteries which are included

Also requires a micro SD card in order to scan to a memory card the micro SD is not included, but they are pretty inexpensive

Can scan in either color or black/white color scans are done as PDF files.

Plug and play easy on a Mac I simply connected the provided USB cable to my computer from the scanner and I was immediately able to transfer the scans

My only complaint is that I wish that it tracked/rolled a little smoother... not that it is bad, but if you don't scan the picture while keeping the scanner perfectly straight it causes the picture to have a bit of an arc. The best way to describe it is to think of a squeegee you must keep it perfectly vertical or horizontal or it will leave arcs.

Comes with a vinyl carrying case.

Final Verdict I like the Ivation Portable Scanner it a very simple device that delivers high quality scans. I am impressed at how quickly you are able to go from the box to having a fully functioning scanner I wish that it tracked/rolled a little bit smoother, but other than that I don't have any complaints.

This Ivation Portable Handheld Scanner is just about the most practical gadget that I have come across in a long time. We run a small business that provides training and also manage a small library for a crafter guild, so we deal with a lot of printed material. Before being sent this scanner to review, we would use a flatbed scanner when we needed to bring information into the PC but this portable scanner has made it much easier for us.

We tested this scanner in the standalone mode (requires 3-AAA batteries, included, and a micro-USB card, which is not included) and also connected to a Windows Vista Laptop via the included USB cable. It worked well in both modes once you figure out the correct speed to move the scanner across the text or image (or combination) to be scanned. To get the best results, the surface should be as flat as possible and you should move the scanner at a consistent, fairly slow speed.

It scans in both B&W and in color, doing a decent job on pictures, but since most of the documents I scan are text the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) functionality was most important for us. The OCR was very good, easily handling all of test documents we tried with about 98% or so accuracy. I was very pleased with result!

This is a very good hand scanner that is easy to install and use!

Highly Recommended!

This is a handy device for quick scans of text and photos. It certainly does not compare in terms of scan quality with a flat-bed scanner, but try fitting a flat-bed scanner into your laptop bag!

I initially had some problems getting it to work. I plugged it in to my PC (Win7 64bit) and, while it was recognized and installed as a plug-and-play device, I could not get it to scan. After talking with the company's tech support, it turns out that I needed to use a memory card (micro SD card) which does not come with the scanner. Once I put that in, no problems. That issue should be more clearly stated in the product instructions.

The scan quality is decent. It took me a few tries to get the scan right since the quality does depend to a certain degree on technique (e.g., slow, steady pass over the paper). It's not hard, and after a couple of botched attempts I was able to produce reasonably good quality scans without any problems.

The build quality seems good. The cover pops off to expose the battery compartment if you want to use batteries and not be tethered to the PC while scanning (batteries are included) and the memory card slot. It's all-plastic construction, but solid enough that I don't have concerns about it falling apart while it's in my laptop bag. The scanner base has rollers to help move it smoothly across the paper. The rollers do attract dust, so a wipe now and again with a micro fiber cloth is a good idea (the cloth is not included).

I didn't use the included software since I have image software that I prefer to use already on my PC.

Worth considering if you're looking for a highly portable scanner that produces decent scans.
