Gomadic USB Charging Data Coiled Cable for the Sanyo SCP-8100 / SCP 8100 Will charge and data sync

I told my dad I would try and get the photos off his old phone and bought this cable to connect it to my Mac. It charges the phone just fine but the Mac won't see the phone as a device. I can't find any software for the Mac that will facilitate this function. I'll have to try on his PC next time I visit.
