Ectaco C-Pen 3.5 BT Bluetooth Handheld Scanner

Ectaco C-Pen 3.5 BT Bluetooth Handheld ScannerAfter seeing all the positive and negative reviews for the Ectaco C-pen 20, I decided to take the dive and buy the Bluetooth version of Ectaco's handheld text scanner for my wife. I was apprehensive because there are no reviews for this product, but figured we could return the scanner if it didn't work.

My wife uses the scanner pen to scan text and notes from her law school classes. She stinks at typing, so being able to scan all the text she needs into her class outlines is a *huge* timesaver for her.

Caveats: we are on Vista as our operating system.

Pros:

Easy setup (make sure you follow the directions; DO NOT plug in the scanner prior to loading the software).

Scans accurately and quickly when plugged in via USB; see Cons for the story on Bluetooth mode.

Picks up the following kinds of text without problems: highlighted texts, text in books (make sure the pages are flat, though), or underlined text (provided your underline doesn't go through the text; see Cons)

Picks up kooky symbols, like the ones I found in some of my wife's textbooks (deltas, ampersands, etc.)

Cons:

Doesn't scan text well if you have underlined text and some of your underlining moves up through the printed text.

Doesn't scan very well in Bluetooth-only mode. Essentially, you have about 2-3 seconds to scan your line of text before the light on the scanner goes out and it transmits to your computer. I have no idea what the heck the deal is, but if the Bluetooth part of this scanner is really what you're looking for, I would recommend you *not* buy this product.

Scanner doesn't seem like the most well-constructed thing in the world, *but* it has held up well so far, so that might be a non-issue.

Overall: This text scanner does just fine when it's plugged in to the computer via USB cord. My wife really does save a lot of time in her studies. But, as I mentioned above, the Bluetooth really doesn't function very well at all. I originally gave this product 5 stars because it did exactly what it promised, but I'm changing my rating to (a very generous) 3 stars now that we've found out that the Bluetooth part of the show is so bad. Hopefully Ectaco will fix this in their next system update?

I am an Information Systems Analyst and one of my tasks it to check on the assets we have regularly. This involves taking serial numbers of PCs laptops, monitors, etc. I was finding a way of making my inventory check simple. Since it involved having to look at a serial number, writing it down, crosschecking and then finally inputting it into an excel sheet.

After searching for something that could make my life easier, I found the Ectaco Bluetooth C-Pen

I just finished testing the device this morning and I must say I was very impressed.

It comes highly recommended.

It can scan data from any printed material even invoices.

It can also scan

* Dell service tags pasted on the system unit.

* Serial number on the laptop adapter

* Computer names we print with the labeller and paste on the PCs.

* Phone serial number on the phone box/packaging.

Because it can also be used wirelessly. It can also scan from a range. I've only tested up to 5meters.

One of the things it has problems with when scanning is scanning anything on a shiny surface eg. The OPTIPLEX 780 on the front of the Dell machines and the serial numbers on the sollatek ultima 800 UPS.

Aside that, I believe it will be a great device to make our work easier and to keep us on top of our assets.

I'm using c-pen 3.5 to scan text from books written in English and in Polish (lots of additional diacritic signs so challenging for any OCR) on a Macbook pro with Snow Leopard system. For that purpose and on that system cpen 3.5 works just great. When its connected to the USB its very fast and accurate. When it is connected via bluetooth it works bit slower and with some errors but still with impressive quality.

Its true that it doesnt recognize underlined text very well but beside that I didnt notice many problems. I was using it also when book was on my knees and accuracy was bit worse then.

I had some problems at the begining as I couldnt switch the default language to Polish but I was helped by support and they fixed the problem in 24h by giving me line of code to write in the terminal and that fixed the bug in the software. I was told that they are going to fix that in next version of software.

Installation and pairing with bluetooth could be more intuitive from the point of view of macuser. I cant switch of the sound of succesfull scan which of course can be eliminated by turning of system sound but its a bit annoying. But other than that the product does all I need. So far worth its price.

First I should caveat my critique with the statement that I don't have very good eye-hand coordination and my hands shake a lot. People that don't have these problems might have better luck with this product.

What I had hoped to accomplish with this product was to scan in single words for translation. I'm trying to learn Spanish and I thought what a great thing it would be if I could just scan a word and get the definition. Previously, and still, I would read Spanish text with my fingers on my keyboard and type the word I didn't know into hit enter, and get the answer. Well I don't type that well and this is an awkward way of reading a book. This product would have been perfect for me had it worked. Since the button on the C-Pen can be defined to be "enter" I would only need the book and the C-Pen. What could be better than this?

Well it doesn't work for me. I'm not that precise. If the pen projected cross-hairs on the text perhaps I'd do better, but I can't tell where the scan starts and where it ends. It's very difficult to scan a single word. If the word ends in punctuation I would challenge anyone to scan just the word.

Well I never got around to returning the product within the time limits so my only hope now is that someone writes and publishes a plugin that filters out single words. If I scan "\i someone wh( " (actually scan) the filter should pick out "someone" as the target word. If I had this I'd be happy even though getting a connection through Bluetooth is an ordeal.

I think this is my first review on Amazon. Been buying stuff for ages, but felt I should finally contribute. There wasn't a lot of reviews on this compared to other products on the market, but this seemed like one of the top ones (based on price) and I was in a hurry to get a pen reader so I got it shipped next day.

One con, no software seems to be included. I had to go to their website to download the software to run this on my PC, took a min or so to install.

Once I had the software installed I plugged it in, tested it out and it really blew me away. This is my first pen/portable scanner and this is going to save me TONS of time! I have to enter long alphanumberic codes into boxes all day. Doing it by hand led to mistakes and wasted time. This thing is super quick, I scan the code and glance up at the monitor and its already all typed in perfectly with spaces and everything.

For what I need it to do, it does it wonderfully!

rooCASE (Magenta) Leather Case Cover with 22 Angle Adjustable Stand for Barnes and Noble NOOK Table

rooCASE Leather Case Cover with 22 Angle Adjustable Stand for Barnes and Noble NOOK Tablet / NOOKcolor Nook Color eBook Reader - MV SeriesWith a couple tweaks, this could be a fantastic case, however are some deficits that disallow me from liking it too much.

The pros:

Easel style for propping up on table, lap, whatever...big selling point.

Construction seems solid, and the bulk makes for feeling like it will offer some protection.

Holds nook nice and snug

good access to controls/usb

Cons:

no speaker hole. C'mon now...the ribbon that attaches to the stand could have been stitched closer to the base and offered plenty of clearance. Disappointing.

Corners are not protected.

Opening towards the bottom is awkward, which then makes the little pocket pretty useless since it's now upside down.

I bought this item base on reviews. I'm not sure if I would of I was able to hold it first.

One of the best easel type cases I've seen, this fits the nook color perfectly, really feels nice under the fingers, props up the reader securely (with a lot of useful variations on the screen angle depending on how you're sitting, etc.), and seems quite tough. Even on the long spans around the edge of the screen, it lays flat and doesn't have an annoying gap. The nook is also quite well protected, and that goes to my only quibble: this case more than doubles the thickness of the nook color. Still thin enough that it doesn't matter to me since I just chuck it in a backpack, but it might to you if you're trying to squeeze your e-reader in a small purse or other "space constrained" spot.

After having it for a week, I haven't even wanted to take it off to try out the skin that I bought at the same time, which is significant. I will install an anti-glare screen protector, but that's more for readability in varied conditions than anything else.

Full points, excellent product so far.

Although the seller says these aren't available until January 20, 2011, I just received my new case yesterday. I couldn't have made a better choice! Does exactly what I was looking for at a much better price than the cases sold directly through Barnes and Noble. Multi-angle reading was my #1 selling point and I am totally satisfied with this stand. With 22 Angle Adjustable multi-views, the case works great while standing, sitting, or laying in bed. The Magnetic Button Closure is a quick, easy-to-use, and a less clumsy feature than a stretch cord or snap. Access to all Control makes this case convenient and hassle-free. Available colors Black, Grey Graphite, Pink and Red. I went with RED and couldn't be happier; the red makes my black Nook color POP -making a statement!

My only con is the Accessory Flap for Paper which is not visible in any of the pictures. The flap is located on the inside of the cover directly facing the Nook screen. Although this inside cover has the advertised Soft Microfiber Interior, the leather flap obscures 5.25" x 3.5" of that protective microfiber. Granted the flap hardly contacts the screen, but if you've had the same experience I've had with keyboard keys scratching your laptop screen, you understand my concern. So my solution: tuck the small microfiber cleaning cloth I will use anyway, on top of the screen before closing the cover. Of course, you could also purchase screen protective film, but I'm a purist and prefer to read with the complete clarity of the eReader glass screen unencumbered by film.

I have to admit, it does fit perfect leaving sufficient room for headphones and power/sync cable, BUT . . . The speaker holes are totally muffled. A few vent holes in the back would have make it perfect, but to compound things, the area is also padded entirely further muffling the audio. This doesn't matter for pure reading, but for audio playback and video viewing, it really makes it difficult. Thinking about slicing out a small wedge of padding, but . . . not sure it will cure anything.

I read at night before I fall asleep which is why I bought the back-lit Nook Color. I like the easel style of the roocase because it works great while I read in bed.

One problem I had it plugged in through the opening in the bottom of the case charging it while reading. When I decided to go to sleep, I flipped the case closed and bent the plug-in part of the charger. Broke it. Don't forget to unplug the charger before closing the case!

These are "okay" for my Samsung but don't fit my husband's Samsung. The plastic is hard and not as comfortable as the original one but it's better than buying a new blutooth.

I live in CA and unlike a large percentage of the population I really don't want a ticket for using my phone while driving soooo...gotta use a bluetooth. Problem with that is those things never sit well in my ear and only the hook keeps it on. Of course when the hook breaks you need to replace it and I could get one for about 1/2 the price of the whole unit which was not an option. When looking up these I found 10 for the price of one and bought it.

Good points : Cheap and work ok.

Bad: Do not fit exactly on the device or on my ear. Often pop off.

Overall still worth the money.

10 Pack of Samsung..... perfect because they frequently break and now we do not have to purchase an entire headset!

I have had really expensive stereo & talk capable head sets from Plantronics, BlueAnt, Motorola, etc., and if you use them enough, a clip or something is going to break or get lost. So I decided to buy this little basic $30 Samsung Bluetooth earpiece to go with my Samsung phone. I was told that the sound quality was great, and if you did not need the bells and whistle of stereo, voice commands, etc., then this was the way to go. I broke the little plastic clip taken the thing out of the package. My fault, since I thought that the little clip was a part of the packaging, so I could take it back to the store. Even though there was a spare in the packaging, apparently Samsung knows that these little clips will eventually break or get lost, I decided to see if I could find a spare for the future breakage or lost clip. To find this pack of 10 replacement clips reasonably priced way cool.

Compaq iPAQ Serial Auto Sync Cable

Compaq iPAQ Serial Auto Sync CableI bought this cable in order to connect my iPaq to my Motorola Timeport PT8167 (or something like that). There was a lot of misinformation out there stating that in order to use the iPaq with a cell phone, that you had to purchase some sort of CF adapter (I think it's made by Socket). That's all good, but the CF adapter costs $120 or so, you have to have the CF sleeve, and if you do, you can't have anything else in the CF sleeve =(

So I bought this and connected the serial cable to the iPaq, attached the supplied null modem adapter (included with my phone), attached the phone cable to the phone, set up connnection in the iPaq, and it dialed and worked. I was literally surfing the net on my iPaq within 10 minutes. The best thing about this is that my CF sleeve can hold my CF card or I can use the phone with a sleeve at all! My next project is to splice together the two cables to avoid the 15 feet of cable and cumbersome null modem adapter. I want a cable that is about 8 inches long that connects directly from phone to PDA.

If you still run Windows NT4 and you have an Ipaq, you cannot use USB. So either upgrade to 2000/XP, or buy this. Serial is really slow, though, so I'd recommend upgrading, personally.

I purchesed the serial cable to apply to Windows NT network (USB does not work). Cable provides reliable connection never had a failure. Very convenient and easy to use.

I bought mine for the road and for just using while at work. I like it because i never have to pull my IPAQ out of the velcroed travel case that I use for carrying it. I am actually thinking of getting another one for home or even the usb version but really I haven't noticed any diff. in speed of transfer.

Seriously it is a great cable...and I recommend having it.

But I still think there are better ways to sync or use your cell phone or modem. Why make things more complicated than they have to be? That is why you need this cable -just in case Murphy's law decides to show its face.

Flexibility is the only reason to have it...

Handspring Visor Serial Hotsync Cradle (Ice)

Handspring Visor Serial Hotsync CradleThis is a must if you don't have a USB port, or if your running Win NT. Goes without saying that synching with a serial device isn't as fast as with the USB cradle, but it does get the job done. I use the USB cradle at home and the serial cradle at the office.

If you are going to start using a PDA, like the Visor Deluxe, consider two cradles if you work outside the home. Having two places to do my "to do list" is worth the $... alone. I did not like the ice color at first, but I am fine with it now. The unit worked perfectly out of the box, and so far connects every time. The Visor became a "killer application" for me, so the need for the two cradles was evident from the start.

Buy Handspring Visor Serial Hotsync Cradle (Ice) Now

I have a cradle for a desk top with windows95 and a serial port and a laptop with win98 and a usb port. I find virtually the same performance in both cradles with regards to time, function, compatability, etc. One odd thing that may be unique to my cradles is that the serial cradle holds the visor MUCH MUCH tighter than the USB cradle. I cant really think of a reason that this would be but detatching it from the serial cradle is somewhat of a pain. Possibily with use it will be less "sticky". The data transfer is smooth with both and I hesitated ALOT (!) about getting a cradle for each computer but I am very glad I did. Right after I did my laptop went in for repairs and my visor needed batteries..... you need to hotsync before a battery change...hence my timing was perfect. Perfect timing doesnt happen often in life and I am just thankful it happened this time...before I started losing data. Consider this option if you have a serial port computer you can use...you won't be sorry PS LOVE MY VISOR!

Excellent cradles either way. I use the USB cradle at home and a serial one at work. You can't tell the difference in speed. The hot sync button on the cradle works like a champ.

I needed a replacement Handspring Visor PDA and cradle-- Yes, I know they are not the rage of today, but some of us couldn't live without one. Fortunately, I found a almost-new Handspring Visor from Ed's PDA 'n More here on Amazon. Great price, prompt delivery, and great followup. It is obvious that Ed has a passion for good service, and his goal is for every customer to be satisfied. He has much more than PDA's- good variety of current favorites and scarce oldies. Thanks, Ed.I'll be back.

SEIDIO DUAL-HEAD SYNC/CHRG MICRO USB CABLE

SEIDIO DUAL-HEAD SYNC/CHRG MICRO USB CABLEThe product performs as described but I have real concerns.

The red micro wire is exceptionally thin. I have never seen such a thin wire on any consumer product of this type. The supporting jack housings and wire coating do not appear to support what I pereceive would be required to protect this thin wire from handling damage. I handle this like a egg as I road warrior from airport to rental car to hotel.

Purchase options for this type cable are limited so I bought it. I should have bought 2 to eleviate my concerns of it failing when I need it most.

This is the one cable to have if you need micro USB sync/charge reliable, retractable, and can charge two devices at once given enough juice. I've used it to charge a wide variety of devices and it has never failed. Sync's my BlackBerry Storm 2 just great. Can charge the Storm and my BT headset simultaneously. Is about as small as a reliable retractable cable can get. Note that you have to connect to a source with sufficient amperage to charge your device, some USB connections on laptops don't provide sufficient current for some devices. I use this regularly in my car souced from the Kensington PowerBolt Duo Kensington K39224US PowerBolt Micro Car Charger for iPad, iPhone and iPod, including iPhone 4 on both the 1 amp and 2.1 amp connections without problems.
