AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 )

I purchased this Alphasmart Dana for my nine-year-old daughter to help her with her homework and she absolutely loves it! She uses the built-in Alphaword (word processing) program which appears full-screen, and she prints via infrared to any one of several IR printers we have in our home (an HP 990, 995, 450 portable or Photosmart 1315, to be more specific). She saves all of her work to her own 32 MB SD memory card. The Alphasmart turns on immediately (unlike a PC which needs time to boot up); the batteries last for days (and she even knows where to plug in the recharger when they get low). The unit is easy to use and very durable. Everything she needs to word process is self-contained in the Alphasmart Dana; and she never needs to sync with a PC in order to use it! (The Alphasmart, incidentally, will also print via a USB cable but that isn't nearly as much fun for my daughter as printing wirelessly.)

She composes her writing assignments while sitting in a chair or on a sofa. She uses a lapdesk (that we purchased from Levenger, a mail-order company) when she works on our bed. Needless to say, she loves the Alphasmart Dana because it allows her to use it just like "Daddy's laptop," which she easily prefers over sitting at a desk and typing on a standard PC.

I also use the Alphasmart Dana for my own word processing (to write product reviews such as this one) while I'm waiting for my daughter or her brother at their sports or music practices. I have my own SD memory card to keep my work separate. And I like how I can import the text into a MS Word document open on my computer simply by hooking up a USB cable and hitting the function key marked "send." (Any receiving PC can accept the data and doesn't need to have the Alphasmart Palm desktop installed in order to do so.)

The standard dictionary and spell checker which comes with the Alphasmart Dana is fairly inadequate. I've downloaded the Noah Pro dictionary and thesaurus from PalmGear.com, and both are significantly better.

The formatting capabilities of the Alphaword program have been generally sufficient for most of my daughter's assignments. For those times when an extra level of "prettiness" is required, my wife will normally upload the text to a MS Word file, and format the document accordingly.

Neither my daughter nor I use the other Palm features (such as calendar, address book, to-do list, or memo) that's included. (I use my Palm 515 for those.) We use the Alphasmart strictly as a friendlier, more durable and less expensive version of a laptop computer. In this capacity, the Alphasmart Dana has performed wonderfully.

My daughter now loves to write and does so without any prompting. The Alphasmart Dana has proven to be an excellent investment. I highly recommend it!

I am studying a course in Computer Systems at University, I have a desktop in my halls but I wanted a laptop to use in lectures as I have a learning disabilty. I was recommended the Dana by a friend, for the price I think that it is a great piece of kit. The full size keyboard is a joy to type on, and the product itself is ALMOST indestructible (I know this as it gets bashed around in my bag). The widescreen is great when using Alphaword, although in most Palm applications there is a Dana logo on the left of the screen as most applications haven't been converted to run in widescreen. I would recommend purchasing an SD card as you can only store 8 files in the internal memory, which can be a bot of a problem if you are away from your PC and cannot hotsync. Overall this is a well made, cost effective and portable alternative to a laptop for word processing. Therefore, I would recommend this product to anyone.

I like writing on the go -in coffee shops, book stores, libraries(!), on my bed before I sleep... And my laptop didn't quite cut it because of power and size.

I was a little apprehensive before buying the Dana because of dimension (too big and I wouldn't carry it), keyboard (I wanted a laptop feel), and screen (too small would be a problem)

but I am quite satisfied with all of the above.

Dana is light and compact. It is large in form, but no larger than a sub-compact notebook, and certainly much thinner and lighter. I put it in my bag/sack without hesitation.

The keyboard is terrific (looks and feels like an Apple keyboard) and the screen is, while not outstanding, good enough, with a nice backlight. It could be a little bigger -this is the reason I don't give it 5 stars -but I guess the engineers needed to make a trade-off here.

The rechargeable battery lasts a long time, certainly more than enough for lugging around without its charger for a day (and I'm sure it lasts a lot longer than this -just that I haven't tried it for more than a day).

I with the AlphaWord would let me change the default font (I like using Times New Roman and 20 points on the small screen). That would be my only complaint. With the supplied default font, however, I can use it without much difficulty so I am not too upset.

I haven't gotten around to using the Palm features, although I have a Palm Tungsten T so I doubt I ever will. I suspect my use is the sweet spot for the Dana -light word processing on the go. The previous reviewer's comment suggests the same.

Dana's website says that there will be an 802.11b ready version out in the future. This would be a pretty cool addition to an already useful product. As it is, I highly recommend it for people who like writing anywhere.

In General:

First I want to make a disclaimer. I sell a lot of these on Amazon Marketplace. I also use one on a daily basis. This review was written on my Dana. It is so light and portable that I bring my Dana with me almost everywhere, in my car, on my walks, in the subway, on my bicycle, and even on my skateboard. I have sold several to people whom I met in this or that cafe while I was typing away on my Dana.

In the summer of 2010 I decided to write a book. But I found my laptop to be too cumbersome and I was always worried that it would get stolen whenever I had it with me in public. So I set about finding a writing tool which was portable and inexpensive. After trying several devices I found my match in Dana.

Dana provides me with excellent basic word processing abilities without the distraction of email, facebook, photoshop, youtube, or the internet in general. I have gotten more actual writing done in the half year since I started using Dana than in the 5 years previous with my laptop.

Dana & Windows 7 & 8:

Not gonna happen. Doesn't work. Unsupported. Fahget about it. Windows 7 has both compatibility mode and XP mode (these are not the same) and neither of them does beans for any AlphaSmart.

The only way to make a Dana useful is to have either a separate PC or a second hard drive booting good ole user-friendly Windows XP. I use my old XP laptop to sync my Dana to the same external drive to which my regular PC backs up. *Voila* Problem solved.

Do NOT buy a Dana if you use Windows 7 and are not willing to do this extra step. This will probably apply to Windows 8 as well.

Supposedly (according to RenLearn) you CAN sync from Windows 7 if you use the IR pod. But I haven't verified this. (as of 9/1/12)

Writing On The Go:

Dana provides excellent distraction free basic word processing capabiity in an extremely portable package. Dana saves files as Rich Text. You have the same functions found in programs like MS WordPad. You can indent, bold, italicize, and make bullet lists. The keyboard is one of the best I have ever used. It is like typing on silk. The keys are concave to fit the shape of your finger tips, they depress easily, and have gentle but firm return. You can save as many files as will fit in the 8MB or 16MB of memory. Dana also has an excellent built in screen-backlight in case you are typing in dim light, as I often do.

Dana is way more durable than a laptop and weighs only about 2 pounds and fits easily in most backpacks. I often type with Dana on my lap without any discomfort. It turns on in about one and half seconds and is usually ready to work before I am. Because Dana is so energy efficient I have never had the batteries drop dead on me. And since Dana can recharge through the USB port and I sync my Dana to my PC every day that I write they will probably never go dead on me. According to the manufacturer specs, Dana can run up to 25 hours on a single charge.

Cables & Software:

People often ask me about cables and getting information to their computer. With Dana this is very easy. The manufacturer provides free downloadable desktop software for Mac & PC which backs up and syncs all the data between Dana and you computer. The software is Palm OS based and includes all the features found on the old Palm Pilots. The calendar is an excellent stand-alone application.

Cables are not a problem. Even though there are several ports in the back of Dana, the only one you really need is the USB port. Dana takes a type-B USB cable. This is the same kind that goes to your USB printer. These can be purchased easily and cheaply. These are so common that you may already have an extra one. And odds are that even if you don't have one, your friend or neighbor does. Maybe if you ask they will give it to you.

Dana has a an additional USB printer port for direct printing. But I haven't tried it as I always print from my PC. Though it will power one of those twisty USB-powered LED lamps. Now I can type in the dark.

Batteries and Dana:

Beware of used Danas that "include" a rechargeable battery. These batteries may be, and frequently are, eight to ten years old. A Dana with an old battery will frequently crash and lose data, even if it's "backed-up" on the SD card. The solution: replace the battery. You can buy a new rechargeable battery pack for less than $20 from renlearn.com

Dana will run fine on normal AA batteries. But you must use alkalines. If you try to use store bought rechargeables , Dana will not turn on. You can make it work with store bought rechargeables by rewiring Dana's insides just a little. You snip two wires, wind them together. Then do it again to two different wires. I did that to mine. To do it well takes about 45 minutes and you have to be careful about the circuit boards. There are detailed instructions online. It's a lot easier than it looks at first. The best thing about this hack is that you can use your own batteries and recharge them by plugging Dana into a USB port, though you lose the ability to safely use alkaline batteries. I found this trade-off to be completely acceptable for myself. If you do a search for "Dana battery hack" you'll find the site by V. Fry where I learned to do this.

What You Should be Aware of When Buying A Used Dana

Some Danas are sold by individuals who are the first owner and used it for their own writing. Most, probably over 95%, were owned first by schools and sold off in large lots. These are often grimy and dirty beyond belief with old stickers and food stuck to them. These require a thorough cleaning. In my experience About 1 in 5 also often have other problems. Sometimes the system board is bad and the thing won't work (very bad.) There are a litany of problems that can occur with used Danas. Sometimes it can be lived with, other times it can be fixed with a reset, and other times it means you need to get a different Dana. Most work fine. Almost all of them have some scratches on the case or screen.

The Dana Stylus

You can actually get by without one. A ball point pen cap or a pinky fingernail works well enough. But it is nice to have a stylus on hand. There is a little slot in the side of the Dana into which the stylus clicks. The default stylus is black. You can also get a colored stylus in red, yellow, purple, blue, and green.

Is Dana Right For You?

If you are a writer looking for a tough, portable writing tool then almost certainly the answer is Yes! Dana should be synced every day or so that you write. If you are going to be near your computer most days but don't want to haul your laptop around with you, then Dana is an excellent choice. Dana is Palm OS 4 based. This means that if your batteries die, you lose all of your data. So if you plan to be away from a recharge point for more than a couple of days then you need something with more data stability. An AlphaSmart 3000 is an excellent choice for that because they are more durable than a Dana and won't experience data loss when main power fails. The 3000 however only saves files in plain text and has an 87 page limitation.

If you are looking for a device for your child then you should take into consideration the child's level of technical aptitude and motivation to write. Dana requires a level of mindfulness that many young children have not yet developed. Dana needs to be synced to the PC and recharged very regularly. A less challenging alternative would be the AlphaSmart 3000 mentioned above.

My husband bought this for me, because I do not like writing on laptops. I do agree with the other reviewers, that the Dana is very portable, and light: I also agree that it is handy and has alot of features for adults and kids alike for writing/etc.

But....there are also things I do not like about this product, one being...when you buy this product, it does not come with a memory card...so, the wireless part goes sooooooo slow...and be careful NOT to lose your work...bc if it isnt kept charged..you will.

Also, the screen is not the easiest to see. It is small and dark (but there is a backround light on it, so it helps). I find it hard to write, not being able to see my last paragraphs I wrote.

And, like I said...if your buying this for the 'wireless' piece, make sure you buy a memory card for it too, otherwise it's useless....it moves at a snails pace and loads almost no pages.

All in all, it's a useful tool, though I wouldn't say it's better than a laptop, but it does do the trick for basic writing/note-taking/and organizing.

It stays put and works great for my Ariaz. I know it is protected when I have it in the case. It's easy to get into with the magnetic closure. Gypsy Silicone Sleeve Set, Pink with White Crown

I've had this for almost two years now and I love it. I can't believe how clean it's kept my Gypsy.

When I ordered this sleeve for my gypsy, I was under the impression that it was going to be a protective cover, to help guard against any bumps or falls that the gypsy may take. However, once I opened the package I was surprised to see that this cover was a very thin silicone cover. However, there are some both pros and cons for this item.

PROS:

* The color is a cheerful bright pink with a white crown design.

* The silicone is very flexible and was no trouble to slip onto the gypsy

* The pink stylus is cute, and fits into securely into the stylus holder without wiggling around.

CONS:

* The white crown design looks like it is going to wear off quite easily

* The silicone sleeve is so thin it is not capable of protecting the gypsy against any drops, spills, or bumps.

* The enclosed screen protector is too large for the gypsy screen, and it is difficult to get it to onto the screen without air bubbles.

All in all, while I wish the sleeve was more substantial (in order to provide more protection) I am pleased with the color and look of the sleeve, as well as the ease of taking it off and on, and the pink stylus.

I received my Gypsy sleeve today and it's pretty much what I expected. It has a soft touch to it and it fits perfectly... Very simple and super cute. The only thing I don't like is the screen protector. It does NOT cover the entire screen and it's hard to get rid of the bubbles.

HP iPAQ hx2495 Pocket PC

the hx2495 is the same underlying product as the hx2490. the ..90 and the ..95 are different in that the 90 is for the business market and the 95 is the consumer market.

the bluetooth widcomm software is pleasant to use. I recommend over the updated WM5 microsoft built-in version that comes with the OS.

this PDA is favorably comparable to the dell axim x50 or dell x50v, but with some models of those having no built-in wi-fi or a full VGA display (vs. the QVGA display on this iPAQ).

I decided for myself that the QVGA display was good enough for me and it is a really excellent display on the hx2495! i plan on using this PDA for GPS car navigation (already own a bluetooth GPS receiver). Media support (videos, MP3s) is excellent. The wifi makes it easy to update software and web surf. The wi-fi was absolutely required for some other applications I use, and so it was good to have it built-in. I would also rate the battery life to be fair to good.

the overall performance is snappy especially on media playing.

the bluetooth and wifi in a small lightweight form, with slightly rugged looks, great performance, windows mobile 5, and a low price make this PDA an excellent value.

This is my first PDA/ Handheld/ Portable Entertainment Device purchased to replace my 14 year old paper daytimer. I choose this unit after much research. My choices narrowed down to the Dell Axim v51 & this. I choose the iPAQ because of the voice recorder and mostly because of the removable battery. Not only does this allow you to replace it should the battery wear out or malfunction but I purchased a larger battery for travel.

I am very pleased with product after several months. After an initial problem with getting it to sync, I discovered the problem was with the firewall & virus programs installed on my PC. I had to uninstall the firewall & virus & uninstall AutoSync 4.1. The units synchronized, then I reinstalled the virus program, upgraded to 4.1 & switched to Windows firewall. Now, its fun, fun, fun. I have a 1 GB card. I listen to music while I play games, watch videos, get my birthday cards out on time, make voice reminders while driving and more.

I only need to recharge the battery every other day. I have loaded at least 7 other programs and it still works great. I use an aluminum, neoprene lined case for protection in my purse.

Everyday I find more uses for it. I also recommend iPAQ for Dummies also sold on Amazon. Although the book doesn't address Windows Mobile 5, there are still additional hints I found very useful.

Just thought I'd add this bit for people who suffer the battery drain problem. This happens when you have an SD card inserted and a working Activesynch connection. It has something to do with constantly monitoring the card's output.

Anyway, HP now have a ROM update that fixes this problem, although they should make more of point in telling people!

It's a simple matter of downloading the ROM update and applying it to your Ipaq. Make sure you have the correct Ipaq though, coz there is a 'b' version which has a different ROM update!

This review is of the hx2495b which I believe has more built in flash memory than the earlier model. I will describe my impressions based upon my previous experience with other pda's (as this is the first Windows Mobile device I have owned) and also based upon the fears I had prior to receiving my new iPAQ.

1. I have owned several Palm OS devices and 1 Linux based device. Overall, I think the Palm OS is the most integrated of all as far as its contacts, calendar, and ToDo list. The calendar on the Windows Mobile device seems somewhat poorly organized, but I am getting used to how it functions.

2. It is also a little harder to navigate a Windows Mobile device using only hard buttons, but this iPAQ allows you to map hardware buttons for various functions so I can do most simple tasks without taking out my stylus.

3. Windows Mobile does not shut down programs when you "X" out of them. Normally this is not an issue with 56Mb of memory...but when running a memory intensive program (usually when surfing for me) I find that I need to manually free up some memory by going into the task manager and shutting down previously opened programs. This is a quirk that is a little annoying but something I can easily live with. There are many free and non-free utilities which can change this behavior.

4. The built in WiFi for this device seems rock solid. I get a better connection than I did with my Linux based Zaurus pda. I would prefer a slightly richer WiFi interface when setting up a connection, but then I am used to working with a laptop where I have more options available. I am sure there are some utilities you can install to beef up the interface.

5. Many of the functions on a Windows Mobile device are accessed by holding down the stylus on the screen (i.e. instead of just a tap). This is the equivalent of a right click in the desktop world and the functionality seems to be logically laid out.

6. Windows Mobile supports both portrait and landscape modes and you can map this functionality to a hard key.

7. My previous pda had a VGA display. I was worried about the loss of resolution when switching to the QVGA display of this device. However, I am now pretty much convinced that a VGA display is nearly a waste with screen sizes this small as I don't even notice a difference for most functionality.

8. There are a crap ton of free applications that exist for Windows Mobile. I was blown away. I thought the Linux world dominated the market for freeware, but I guess that Microsoft is on so many devices that there is a lot of software written for them.

9. I think the battery drain issue must have been fixed for this model. I have not loaded any updates to the OS, I have an SD card installed, and my battery life is excellent. I can easily read for over 4 hours on this device before recharging (I keep my backlight at 1/2 power when in doors).

10. This version of Windows Mobile has persistent memory storage so if you lose all the power in your pda your applications will still remain. All the applications I have installed so far have given me the option of storing them on my SD card...although I haven't even come close to filling up the built in storage.

11. My desktop machine has WinXP and Microsoft Office. Synchronization is painless. I'm sure it is not so painless with a Linux or Mac OS.

12. The suite of applications that comes with the iPAQ impressed me. It already has a built in terminal services client to remotely connect to a Windows machine (this is fairly impractical given the screen size but is good for shear geek factor). Excel and Word are included but I haven't played with them much. Out of the box you are ready to play mp3's and wmv's on the built in media player.

Overall, this is the best pda I have owned. There are some quirks with the OS (every OS has some), but this iPAQ delivers a lot of power for such a small device. I am a very happy owner.

To put everyone's mind at ease, BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED (you simply have to do a few steps to fix it). BATTERY LIFE IS EXCELLENT once you complete the fix(I can go several days on standby and still have well over 80% battery power left).

The unit is suberb for typical PDA functions and a GREAT feature is not losing your data if you happen to drain the battery (resident memory). Works great as an MP3 player too (I just bought a 2 GB card for about $50; uses SD and CF cards).

I sync at work and at home...to me a PDA isn't too useful (other than music, books, etc.) unless you really put all your organizational info on it (contacts, appointments, notes, shopping lists, etc.).

PalmOne Vx Handheld

The time arrived for me to upgrade from my trusty old Palm V. I was running short on memory, so that left the Palm IIIc, Vx and Jornada 540 for consideration.

I tried the IIIc for a month. Found the color screen a pleasure to work with. There are not that many 3rd party apps in color yet, but that appears to be changing fast. I liked the TinySheet Excel compatible spreadsheet in color. The black on white screen is very readable for e-books. Battery life was acceptable. On a 3 week business trip I had to recharge it only once. The downside for me is size, the comfort factor. You can NOT comfortably carry a Palm in a shirt pocket. I carry it in my pants pocket, with the V I would forget I had it until I needed it. The IIIc, it was just always 'there'. The only other gripe I have is that it's almost impossible to read the screen outside. Something I took for granted on the monochrome V. Bright daylight however fully washes out color screens. I REALLY like the small updates to the new PalmOS. Eg. the little shortcut bar that appears at the bottom of the screen for menu shortcuts is an excellent innovation. It makes cutting and pasting as fast as with the PC using the keyboard.

I used the Jornada for 2 weeks before I returned it. As my expectations weren't that high from my previous exposure to the platform I can't say that I was dissappointed. However, I still don't think MS is up to par. On the balance still more 'clicks' are needed than on a Palm. I couldn't find those easy to use 3rd party freeware apps such as the NY crossstreet finder, on PocketPC. On face value I liked Excel, but I found it's small differences with the PC version annoying. Knowing one, I made assumption about the other that didn't always pan out. The high resolution of the screen is nice. For e-books the Jornada would be good, if not for the poor passive matrix screen. For example, on the plane, I could put the IIIc on the tray in front of me, and read at an angle. This is impossible with the Jornada screen. For basic PDA functions it is adequate. I feel the apps still are a bit sluggish. Playing MP3's is fun, but with 2 songs at CD quality, memory is depleted which makes it impracticle for multimedia, unless you spend more to expand memory. Forget playing MP3's in the background while doing other work, the device slows down to a crawl. Size wise, the Jornada is a bit bigger and heavier than the IIIc, which to me is a problem as I already explained. Battery life seemed shorter than the IIIc, though it may be subjective because it was on a lot, while learning the PocketPC platform.

The Palm Vx is basically a faster Palm V with more memory. Just got it yesterday and I already love it. This is the one I'm keeping. I suppose that after getting used to the size and weight of the Palm V, there is no going back. However, I'm glad that I went through the hassles of trying out the other 2 models. I learned a few things:

1) Size matters.

2) Until technology for multimedia matures, color screens do not add significant value to justify their impact on size and battery life.

3) PocketPC looked good on face value, but didn't go the distance, however, I do believe that as technology advances, multimedia such as MP3 playback will be great to have. I hope that by that time Palm will have the capability.

4) 3rd party apps add tremendous value. Something I forgot until I couldn't find my favourite little add-ons that make life easy, such as AccountManager, cross street finder etc.

All in all, the best favor you can do yourself is getting one. Got my parents a Palm V 2 months ago, now I have to get them another one so they stop fighting over it.

Due to bumbling on the part of Palm, the Palm Vx is still the standard in small, easy to use, full-functioning PDAs. Sporting a full-size screen (compared to the puny screens on the m100, m105 and m125) and a lithium rechargeable battery, the Palm Vx remains the sleekest, lightest PDA on the market. It fits easily into your hand or your shirt pocket. Now that its price appears to be coming down, it is a great buy, especially compared to the overpriced m125.

Palm's newest high-end models, the m500 and m505, are a bit better than the Vx, mainly because of a new card slot and a slightly more tactile feel. The m505 also offers some rather anemic color. But Palm's software hasn't really improved much since the Palm Vx came out, IMHO, and the expansion slot is not so compelling to me that it would be worth paying the additional dough.

I've owned a few palm pilots over the past several years. I switched to the Palm Vx because my Palm III gave out after months of abuse riding in my back pocket. The Vx is solidly built, very reliable and never needs batteries. I use mine heavily and sometimes forget to recharge it in the cradle. I've found that the battery lasts about three weeks with heavy use as long as you don't use the backlight. I now use my Palm Vx with my laptop running Windows 2000 and synchronize my data using the infrared port. The cradle is just a charge stand for me! If you're nervous about buying this product... relax! I teach computer skills to executives in the Chicago area. The learning curve for Palm devices is about 20 minutes. There is a shorthand called "graffiti" that you will need to learn to write in your information, but you can also use your computer or a separately available keyboard to enter in your data. Newer and more powerful palm devices have been introduced since I bought mine, but the Vx is an excellent value now that the price has dropped. And it's still the smallest! If you're looking for a PDA to handle your personal and business information and do not need to display color photos, videos or play MP3s, the Palm Vx is perfect.

While looking for a PDA, I was torn as to which one to get. Below are the choices I looked at and why, ultimately I didn't get them:

Palm IIIc Color is nifty, but only a luxury. The only times I see a real need for color are in graphics programs, something that I don't know if I would appreciate working on a PDA.

Palm VII Thinking of wireless communication is certainly neat, but I take the Baltimore Metro into work, and wouldn't have a connection half of the time I use the PDA

Handspring Visor It's not very professional looking, but more than that, the operating system is not upgradeable. If a "need to have" upgrade is developed sometime in the future, you're simply out of luck. Yeah, hardware might be faster than software, but who is going to notice?

Psion 5mX the neatest thing about the PDA, I think, is the ability to open it up and work anywhere. The miniature keyboard on these models won't let me do that while standing on a train.

Windows CE Models dislike for the Microsoft name simply ruled these out, but the HP Jordana 545 certainly looks nice.

Palm V 2MB of memory just doesn't meet my needs.

I went with the Palm Vx because it has everything that I needed in it. I've got the entire Bible, whatever novel I'm reading, about 200 contacts, office and home e-mail, a slew of games, and a detailed appointment calendar, and I'm barely at half of my storage capacity. Basically, it is serving as an entertainment device between home and work. I get work done, but if I don't have any work to do, I'm never bored taking mass transit. Of course, rechargeable batteries are also a plus never have to worry about running about and finding some AA or AAA batteries and then trying to remember what device you stole them from when you finally get around to buying more. The amount of synchronization that I perform (e-mails written on the train and such) ensures that I don't forget to charge it nightly (although I think you can last a good week or so without recharging and normal usage).

The only feature I would like is an MP3 player add-on, but a cheap MP3 player is more than adequate. Yes, this is an expensive device, but I think each PDA is expensive, and this one is worth the amount of money added over any of the other models.

I have looked long (about 2 years) and hard for the "perfect" PDA and finally decided to get a PalmVx. As most first time buyers do some research on a purchase this expensive (for a PDA), I looked and read tons of reviews, newsgroup messages, etc.. to try to figure out what is out there and what will still be there few years from now.

I first thought about the user population and the kinds of things I will be able to do. Palm is the dominating PDA device and a bit of research told me that I could do much more than what I needed to do. There are literally thousands of software for the Palm and the hard part is deciding which software to use for a particular task. The decision came down to Palm IIIxe, IIIc and Vx (all had 8MB of RAM). Most of the features are about the same in all three devices. I discarded the IIIc since it was the first color model (my experience told me not to trust first models of anything computer related), it is more expensive, and because of the color, it is slower. Some people have reported pixel problems with their IIIc. I thought about expandability which is better on IIIxe but thought if I wanted expandability, I would've gotten a Visor. Also, their are no current upgrades for any Palm device that will expand the memory past 8MBs.

The thing that got me about the Vx was the design. I went to the local CompUSA to compare them side by side. There was no match! I also liked the fact that the Vx has a rechargeable battery. This might not seem much, but after the initial charge of 4+ hours, I only have to leave the unit in the cradle for a few minutes each day to get it fully charged which I do anyway to hotsync (I found out in a lot of newsgroup posts, that the III series drain battery when left on the cradle even if it is off). The Vx also has a faster processor which is rated at 20mhz instead of 16 for the other models. The Vx ships with the latest version of Palm's OS v3.5.

I have been using this for about a month now and am VERY happy with it. It is a lot of money I know, but I don't think I would have been satisfied with any other model. You just have to hold it in your hand to realize this.

If (it) is too (expensive), looks and weight are not important and having to buy AAA batteries don't bother you, I suggest going for the IIIxe. If not, you won't regret getting a Vx, that is, if you can get one (most places are out of stock).

Has a nice notebook feel to it; perfectly matched to the Nook HD+ dimensions. I love the auto sleep/wake function and the option to use it in Portrait mode, you just have to be willing to tear off and reattach the pieces with the velcro strips. As with most, I had issues with the drivers for this cable. I tinkered with so many settings, downloaded so many different drivers, and tried so many different things, I'm honestly not even sure what combination resulted in a functional cable. All in all, it took me close to two hours to make the cable functional, but once it was, it does its job perfectly. Programming through CHIRP is smooth and painless at that point.

If you're not willing to tinker with settings, drivers, etc. I would advise against this cable. I'm no expert, but it did take me well over an hour to get things running. I didn't mind so much, especially for the price, but it's something to be aware of.

I received the cable quickly. The cable works and I have had no problems using it. However, the software does not work. I have Windows 7. The softare appears with a file extension of (.rar). I have never seen any executable software that uses a (.rar) extension. NOT for Windows anyway. I am still trying to find a working software online. CHIRP works. But I would like to install the Baofeng software to program things that CHIRP does not.

Overall, I am happy with the cable but not with the softare included. You better buy just a cable... then locate teh software online.

This product arrived within two days in the mail, also amazingly has its own serial number and bar code. very pleased. Windows 8 automatically installed the correct driver and its perfect. The driver disc has a ton TON of drivers for all the other radios this cable is compatible with like puxing/ wauxun and a crap ton more.

Cable is well constructed and would highly recommend for anyone wanting to make use of programming software for the UV-5R or your Wauxun.

This is the USB cradle and power adapter for the T-series Clie, not the travel kit. As far as cradles go, it's quite nice. Everything fits snugly and seems well-constructed, although the connection between the power adapter and the cradle is a bit odd.

Bought this to use on trips, to recharge and connect my PEG-T615C to laptop. The official Sony "solution" for traveling more than a couple of days (the battery doesn't last much longer) consists of two separate items: a cradle-less USB connector to synch, and a power supply. (The power supply is the same that comes with the cradle, but with a connector for the handheld.) Some genius decided they could maximize profit that way, but it is almost as bulky as a second cradle. I wish they offered a single USB cable capable of recharging the handheld (Targus offers such a cable but not for the PEG-Ts)

So far, this case has been great for my kindle. I chose this one because the kindle is encased in a hard case, instead of being held down flimsily by some elastic or something, giving more protection. I'm pretty tough on my electronics, and this case has managed to keep my kindle safe. I like the rotating feature, I use it quite a bit. The only time it's a bit tedious is when I'm just trying to hold my kindle to read; the front flap just hangs to the side and it's a bit cumbersome. Besides that, I have no complaints.

I haven't used the stylus much, but it seems to work fine.

2.4GHz Wireless Mini Keyboard with Touchpad

I have a Mac Mini connected to my HDTV and I purchased this wireless keypad/touchpad to control the computer while watching TV on our couch. Previously, we had a Compaq computer connected to the same HDTV display and used a full size wireless keyboard with a trackball built in to the keyboard to operate the computer. This Mini Multimedia Keyboard is a thousand times better. I have no complaints. It's small. Easy to use. Had no problem getting it to work. The Mac Mini recognized it immediately. The touchpad is the best feature. It's super easy to mouse around the screen and you can tap the touchpad to click (it also has right and left click buttons). Typing is easily done as well for a keyboard this small. It doesn't compare to typing on a full size keyboard but I didn't expect it to. It stays connected to the computer without interruption while using it. And the battery (chargeable via a USB cable) stays charged for as long as we've needed it. I couldn't be more thrilled. Especially since I totally bought this on faith. No reviews at the time of purchase. Hopefully this review will give you the confidence to purchase. Unbeatable deal at any price so it's especially nice that it costs less than half of what other wireless keyboard solutions are going for. Great solution for remote control of a computer. Especially if you are using your computer to watch TV.

This is a tough device to review. It has a lot of pluses, and a lot of minuses. Let me give you the skinny:

1. This is really designed for a home theater PC. This is NOT a replacement for a mouse and keyboard. If you are looking for something like that, then keep looking.

2. While the quality of the device is not top-notch, it is fine for its intended use. I use this device to navigate Amazon UNBOX and the web on my Media PC in my living room. It is a good, not great, device for this task. I am fine with the PS3 controller for Blu-ray, Netflix, etc.; however, I have tried navigating Netflix, Blu-ray, etc. on said PC and everything worked fine.

3. The Taskpad is slow. This is common for all Taskpad-based devices not so much with Track-ball ones. I set the mouse to max speed and it is tolerable. Once again, this is NOT a replacement for a true keyboard and mouse.

4. I do like the fact that the device charges from any mini USB cable and requires no drivers or setup it is essentially a PS/2 mouse and keyboard for Windows.

5. There is no true backlight, regardless of whatever the packaging or description says. This can be annoying in a very dark room, but in my personal experience, there is enough light to use this for basic functions.

6. Lastly, there is price. Realistically, this is a fairly inexpensive device when you start looking at alternatives, so keep that in mind.

Overall, I would buy this device again. Is is great? No, but it is very convenient and small. If the statements above describe your needs, then you should give it a go.

NOTE: This device works on almost any Windows PC/laptop. I have NOT tested it on a Mac.

Great range, as advertised. I ran out of living room testing and had to back up the stairs. It started to get flaky after about 30 feet and died just a few steps further back. Note: I had the USB receiver on a front port of the computer; if it's on the back the tower itself can block signal and cut your range down a bit. Walls kill it very fast, too, but it's not often you'll be using this kind of thing around a corner.

It's surprisingly well built for some cheap blister-packed Chinese electronics. It looks and feels very clean.

The backlit keypad makes it great for use in a dark room. The orange color also doesn't screw with night vision as badly as blue or white. Unfortunately, it doesn't turn on with just any keypress... you need to double-press the RF button to turn it on, so you'll still have to peck at a specific button in the dark.

The touchpad mouse is nice. It doesn't support any of the new "double touch" features that newer laptops have, but you can double click icons or click and hold to drag and drop or highlight text just like you'd expect. Two actual mouse buttons are just underneath to take care of anything else, but you'll usually never need them.

Many folks have been complaining about the keyboard, and I agree with a few of their comments. Specifically, things like not having a tab button, or deciding to give the [\-|] a dedicated key instead of a far more used [/-?] In addition there is no true "shift" button; it's a shift-lock. You click it, enter the letter you want in caps, then click it off. This is all however just a minor inconvenience as these kinds of controllers aren't intended for writing novels. They're remote controls for presentations, or PC home theatres where you should only need to be entering the occasional URL or password. If you're going to be doing a lot of typing, get a full-size wireless keyboard with a mouse built in.

The buttons do make a pretty audible clicking noise. They're not silent soft-touch buttons like a TV remote. It's a bit more noticeable than my keyboard. Not something that concerns me for my use, but again worth disclosing.

The remote goes to sleep on its own pretty quickly to conserve the battery. You'll pick it up and notice the mouse is unresponsive. Tapping the touchpad doesn't seem to wake it... so you'll have to press a mouse button or the space bar to wake it up. A minor thing, but worth disclosing; it might annoy some users greatly.

The rechargeable battery may be a pro or con depending on who you ask. You do have to occasionally plug it in, and if it's dead you can't just throw a new set of AAs in it. This can be a pain in the arse if you don't have a place to dock it. Kept in a laptop bag for presentations you'll need to remember to plug it in beforehand. For an entertainment center you can keep the cable plugged in to the PC or console when you're done with it and always know where the remote is. (Or pick up a USB wall adapter if you don't already have one that came with your cell phone and leave it plugged in on the table next to the couch when not in use.)

Overall, if you're looking for a portable pointer with the added function of an almost-full keyboard this thing is fantastic; better than even some $100+ devices we've tried selling themselves as "presentation pointers" and the like. This sleek little black keypad is perfect as the "remote" for my PC entertainment center, just don't expect it to replace a full keyboard and playing Starcraft II from your couch.

Four stars over five due to the few tiny quirks, and the fact that my hand gets downright crampy trying to use the touchpad mouse while holding the thing like a calculator for extended periods of time.

After reading several reviews I didn't quite know what to expect from this keyboard. I have to say that I am VERY impressed with it. I am using it with an older G4 Mac Power Book as a media server and it linked immediately and works like a charm. Not having function keys is a minor disadvantage that is MORE THAN MADE UP FOR by the $35 or so price tag. The range is excellent and I haven't had a single problem using it after a weeks worth of constant use. One feature that I didn't notice in the description or reviews was that the remote is rechargable via USB so I don't have to worry about replacement batteries (and really at $30 I'll just buy a new one when the rechargables are done). If you're looking for a small handheld keyboard for a media center or other specialized use this keyboard is awesome.
