HP IPAQ rx4200 Mobile Media Companion

I was looking for small inexpensive pda (Windows pocket PC) that I would use for reading books, playing few games, and keep my contacts. There are only few like that available in US. IPAQ RX4200 just came out and I decided to give it a try. My previous PDA was Dell Axim X3.

It is smaller than most PDAs, especially a screen (only 2.8 inches) but it is well build and very comfortable in hands. Reading books on rx4200 is very comfortable (I use Haali Reader excellent free program for reading books). Screen is bright IMHO better quality then Axim X3 and PDA is very comfortable in hand, especially in landscape mode. The stylus is good size, the only issue is it is placed in the bottom left corner (if you hold PDA in landscape mode) and it is a little difficult to take out.

Overall I like it a lot due to its size and build quality. For people who want to play games on it there might be an issue there is no directional pad at all on this PDA, so basically only games that can be played on it are those with stylus.

Got my PDA right when it came out. Windows makes it easy to use. Used it during my internal medicine and pediatrics rotations so far. Downloaded Harrison's, Harriet Lane etc. for it and it worked well. I have yet to have a single problem with it. Slim design fits right in my shirt pocket during rounds. Added a sweet 1 GB card for it, because its not like a LifeDrive, and it holds everything i need, including some mp3's for listening while reading or playing games on it. Battery life is good. Very impressed overall

The 4200 has worked well for me.

I have downloaded several medical reference books and software packages that are easily retrieved and read on the go.

Swapping files with my home computers has been as simple as any other external thumbdrive. Drag and drop.

I purchased the device for it's weight and size as I had not wanted to be bogged down running from call light to call light as a patient care technician or during clinical training as a nurse.I have to go fishing for it in my multi pocketed cargo pants, as it is light enough not to notice.

I installed a 2gig card and loaded some music to de-stress and have been pleasantly suprized by the sound quality. The few pictures I loaded are impressively clear and sharp.

The wireless hooked up without any problems at home, at school, and at the hospital. I like the way the emails are summarized so I can view who is writing without worrying about having bits added.

I use the calendar,and it sinks with Outlook without any problem. I also use notes.The ability to quickly jot something down(or voice record a thought) has solved the thicket of post-it notes I use to contend with.

The touch screen has worked very well. Letter recognizer gets it right most of the time, which is impressive given my handwriting.

The ability to surf the web has been the least satisfying, although a fast check of the weather, sports scores, or news has been useful.

I downloaded a free map program that works really well for a quick check on directions around town.

I understand that many phones are now capable of many of the same functions, but I'm glad not to have the distraction of the phone on me while at work or school. This is a tool for productivity. I find the phone a tool for wasting a lot of time.

So now i'm dependant the rx4200 which is a good thing.

If I must have something to critize it would be an inability to really personalize the today screen. There are commercial software readily available to change it but I haven't bothered as the navigation works well enough for now.

What's very cool is that you can whip it out anywhere.

I think I'll go play with my IPAQ now on my hammock.

Perhaps read about last nights NBA game,review some concepts from yesterday's lecture, look over the upcomming weeks events, write my sister a quick note, look up my mother in laws latest complaint, listen to my new music, add a few sentences to the word doc paper I'm writing, and the kids well think I'm out there playing games. I could do that to if I had the time.

I love my new mobile media companion. Previously I owned a Handspring Visor Deluxe and boy was this an upgrade! The color screen is very bright and easy to see, all your programs, system settings, etc are easy to find and use. I keep all my medical information on it for my doctor appointments.

I would recommend this unit to anyone considering a PDA, just make sure you put a large memory card in it 1GB or larger.

This HP iPAQ is designed to be a cheap, entry level Windows Mobile PDA, but actually does almost everything its more expensive non-cell phone PDAs can do.

SCREEN

This is probably the biggest sticking point. You'll likely only pay $250-300 for the rx4240, but the reason it's cheaper is because its highly compact design only has a 2.8 inch screen. Most "normal" sized PDAs have 3.5 inch screens. The screen is noticeably smaller, but the color and picture is crisp as it still sports a 320 x 240 pixel resolution. So while it is smaller, the screen is still high quality. I recommend drawing rectangular boxes on a piece of paper with 3.5" and 2.8" diagonal lines to get an idea of the size difference. If the larger screen size is important to you, don't buy this unit.

OTHER HARDWARE

The rx4240 has built in 802.11 b/g WiFi that works great with my wireless routers. This iPAQ has a relatively speedy processor inside. It has Bluetooth 2.0, but I do not think it works with Bluetooth stereo headsets for music listening purposes (I haven't tried). The unit also has a headphone jack, USB 2.0 type B jack, and built in voice-recorder. They all work well.

BUTTONS/INTERFACE

The touchscreen's responsiveness works as expected. There's nothing special about the stylus, although it is a bit more difficult to remove compared to my Palm PDAs I've had in the past. You can input with the stylus using a virtual, on-screen touch keyboard (preferred method) or write grafiti-like handwritten letters. The rx4240 has a button on the top to activate the voice-recorder. There are also 4 buttons on the side that can be user-assigned to do anything, like lunch email, or Windows Media Player. Unfortunately, since the unit is so compact, it does not have a directional pad and instead relies on a scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is a little stiff at first, but once you break it in it works well for scrolling through internet pages. The screen also has a removable plastic cover, which gets the job done, but if you're carrying the device with you at all times I'd recommend a case.

SOFTWARE

The rx4240 comes loaded with Windows Mobile 5 OS, Mobile Word, Excel, and Power Point as well as other Microsoft staples like Internet Explorer, Media Player and MSN Messenger. It's easy to sync to your computer and move files back and forth. The Office programs work great, however, I feel that the Internet Explorer is too slow. I would instead demo Opera's web-browser for better results. The email program syncs with Microsoft Outlook easily enough. You can also check hotmail and other web-based emails.

STORAGE

After everything is preloaded, you have about 70-80 MB worth of free program storage space in the unit. There is also an expansion slot for SD cards to load up with programs, music, and video. I find that the unit is great for watching TV on it via my SlingBox Sling Media Slingbox PRO ( SB200-100 ).

PROBLEMS

The screen might be too small for some users, but for me it's fine for light office use, quick internet browsing, email checking, and watching SlingPlayer TV. I do miss having a d-pad, but the scroll wheel is actually more useful for webpages. I also wish that HP would offer a USB thumb-keypad for the device.

Overall, if you're looking for a highly compact non-cell phone, non-GPS PDA for a variety of light to moderate uses, you can't beat the price/performance value of the rx4240. However, for heavy PDA users I'd instead recommend a smartphone with a built in thumb keypad.

Genius LuxeMate i200 Compact Stylish Keyboard

I was very skeptical when I ordered this keyboard since no one has written a review on it yet. So I took a gamble and just based on looking at the picture and doing some googling (to see more pictures), I went ahead and ordered it.

Much to my surprise this keyboard is awesome! The layout is quite good, very similar to what you will find in most laptops. The feel of the keyboard is very nice. It has a very expensive feel to it, due to the glossy outer case. I like the individual keys and the spacing between them. This keyboard is as close as you can get to the Apple design (though the Apple keyboard is much thinner).

Overall I would highly recommend this keyboard for those who are trying to conserve some desk space and do not use the numeric keys.

I use it for CAD to get my wrists and arms in a more natural position and bought a separate number pad. Its compact but not because the letter keys are any smaller then normal. The size savings is really just from taking out the number pad and smushing in the other keys. But all the keys are there and the letter keys are the exact same spacing as a normal keyboard which was just what I was looking for. Not overly loud. The usb cord is a bit short so I had to use an extension to reach my computer.

just spend the extra few dollars and get the Genius. not sure why the other reviewer complained about clakity keys. this keyboard is not as quiet as a full-on scissor-switch laptop keyboard. but it's definitely quieter and smaller than a regular size keyboard that has a full frame + number pad.

this is just what I needed to keep my sanity with my limited desk space. the glossy black finish seems to attrack smudges and fingerprints and pet hair, if that will bother you.

On many issues I'd rank this keyboard as fully satisfactory: It's extremely handsome; layout is great; and it's ergonomic at least in terms of consuming minimal space (and therefore not restricting us from using areas of our desk which larger keyboards will infringe upon). In virtually every other area, I'd rate this keyboard a 5.

But the most important thing about a keyboard is how it types; and the most important thing that enables it to function well in that regard is the mechanics of the keys. I've worked more hours a day than you want to know about... and I generally wore out a keyboard in under 6 months until I discovered BTC keyboards quite a few years ago. Until recently, I used to buy my BTCs from Amazon here, but now they've become scarce or not available. The BTCs I've been using are this size, and they just type fantastic, owing to very good key mechanisms. While the BTCs weren't available, I bought this Genius in the hopes it would feature similar mechanics... but no... it's one of the old plunger types which I wear out so quickly.

To explain my complaint... plungers introduce a looseness -the keys will wiggle around because there has to be some clearance for this (cheap) kind of mechanism. This looseness works against you. If you stroke straight down the center of a key, you get one kind of stroke response. Any side movement (and there almost always is some lateral movement in a keystroke) or missing the center, and your stroke cants the key, forcing it to stick as it tries to depress. This of course makes for terribly inconsistent response -especially in a thin board like this, which has to have shorter shafts (which is why I anticipated that it would probably feature the BTC style mechanisms instead).

Another thing you're going to have then is all the faster wear, because with the shorter plunger mechanisms, your keystrokes are binding all the worse -wearing this plastic gizmo out all the faster.

Great looking unit. Perfectly compatible with a Mac or Windows. But right out of the box... terrible for typing. Loosest new keys I've ever experienced. Worse than other (deeper) plunger types I've suffered. I won't be using this one for long. It's such an impediment to good typing that really, it needs to get tossed away brand new for interrupting my timing -which of course is what sticking keys do.

Upgrade the mechanism, and this would be a great board. Otherwise, imho, of *negative* worth to your work.

Just got this in the mail a couple of days ago and wanted to try it out before I put it under the tree for my son.

First, the packaging was awesome and the experience of opening it will be great on Christmas morning.

Second, the start up was easy. I wanted to make sure it was totally set up for my son because he's going to be anxious to get going on the games. It was only a few steps and I set it up with a Google account.

Third, I'm really impressed with the spending card. I bought five of these for my kids for Christmas and originally it did not work well (see first review below). I sent them back for a refund. I will say that one of the best things about MG is the customer service team. I was contacted almost immediately and informed there was a fix in place that solved the freezing issues. I bought five of these for my kids for Christmas. I was excited when I opened them to set them up prior to Christmas even downloaded a couple of Android games. Set up Google accounts, etc. and repackaged. Kids thought I was the best youngest even called it her "phone". Shortly thereafter, the units started to freeze and shutoff randomly. You'd touch the screen and a totally different app would open. I did the pinch multiple times, but who wants to wait between playing over and over again to restart the unit! Very disappointing shipping them back and now need to figure out what to get them as a replacement. smh

Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 PDA

The Sharp Zaurus Linux-based PDA is both extremely powerful, and easy to use.

The Zaurus's fast CPU, high quality full-color LCD, and excellent headphone sound output makes for an impressive photo viewer, MP3 and MOD music player, and video-clip displayer.

The slide-out keyboard has completely weaned me from using the handwriting system, which is unfortunate, because a lot of work was obviously put into it. Not only does the handwriting system have a help mode where you can practice strokes, but you can actually train it new, or alternate strokes for each character. But when you can type so quickly, why bother writing?

The dual expansion slots are great, allowing me to use an SD card for software installation, and still have my CF slot free for a RAM card full of MP3s or a network adapter.

Honestly, I was impressed by the capabilities of the Java system. In my opinion, Java has always been too slow and cumbersome to use, and the thought of running it on a 206MHz PDA seemed ridiculous. But from what I've seen of Java applications (even games!) running on the Zaurus, I'm beginning to realize there's a lot of potential in Java.

As a desktop Linux user, I'm also tickled to have the power and stability of my favorite OS underneath the hood. For the extremely geeky, you can get Java, C and C++ compilers that run ON the Zaurus!

The "Qtopia" environment and applications are as intuitive as they are nice to look at. The PIM applications have all the functionality I'm used to from my Palm device, and then some.

Until I can afford a wireless modem to stick in one of my Zaurus' two expansion slots, I've been using a Compact Flash ethernet dongle to get online while watching TV.

After using offline browsers on the Palm, I was shocked to find a full-fledge, desktop-quality browser built right into my Zaurus: Opera.

Opera's zoom-out feature can't be lived without. Frustratingly, most websites assume you have a screen capable of at least 800x600. On a small PDA screen, this would mean constantly scrolling left and right as you try to read. Under Opera, you can zoom out to get a better overview of the page, and still be able to read all of the text!

I've only used the Sync software (Qtopiadesktop I used the Linux version) a few times, since my pattern for PDA usage is to use them as stand-alone devices. It was quite intuitive, though, as it looked and felt just like a larger version of the PIM software built-into the Zaurus.

Finally, while there's obviously very little 3rd party software for the Zaurus so far, since it just came out, there's been what seems to be exponential growth. I've already installed almost 20 new applications, including games, a streaming Internet radio player, and an embedded version of the popular Linux browser, "Konqueror."

Software installation is usually a snap, too. Just as with Palm, all that's usually needed is one file downloaded off a website. Run the graphical installer, wait a few seconds, and the new app. is there, ready to run!

All in all, it's a great system. Powerful and slick hardware, in a beautiful form-factor, running powerful and slick software.

First and foremost, if you are looking for purely Personal Information Management (PIM) functions and not generally inclined towards Linux, then do yourself a favor and buy yourself a Palm Pilot.

The Zaurus is basically a mini Linux workstation with a lot of functionality you would normally find only on a desktop. With the Zaurus, you can:

* Browse the web with a scalable and full featured browser

* Read and edit MS-Office documents (Word, Excel and Powepoint)

* Write and execute scripts and programs (including Java)

* Play music and video

* Control your desktop Windows PC (using VNC software)

It is so powerful that you can actually use it as a Web or file server (using Apache and Samba). I use my Zaurus to administrate my Linux server and Oracle database server when I am away from my desk.

Plus there are tons of applications, utilities, games, etc., that you can download. Zaurus has a very active user community forum (check the links from the Sharp Zaurus official web sites) where you can get a lot of useful tips from.

Having said all that, the PIM functions that came with the Zaurus were pretty poor compared with the Palm Pilot. This lead me to hang on to my Palm Vx for dear life. I even took the drastic step of downloading and installing a Palm Pilot emulator (called QPose) onto my Zaurus. The performance hit on the Zaurus was so bad that I had to delete QPose and instead carry both my Palm Vx and Zaurus with me.

However, now that Sharp has released a new ROM (v3.10, as of May 15, 2003, see below) the PIM functions have vastly improved. So much that I am now inclined to keep my Palm at home and take only the Zaurus along.

Upon getting your Zaurus, do yourself a favor and install the terminal and file manager applications that come in the CD. The terminal application enables you to do a lot of tweaking and is mandatory if you plan to use the Zaurus to its full capabilty. It actually comes with a basic Linux shell environment and comes with such neat utilities as vi editor, ftp and telnet clients, ping, and a large number of Linux/Unix tools.

Another application I found very useful is called "rotation". It enables you to rotate the application screens by 90 degrees, making such things as web browsing, file editing and using the terminal appication a lot more pleasing and functional. You can download the "qpe-rotation" and "qt-embedded-rotation" files (ipks) from the ZaurusSoft website.

Also, an important suggestion to existing SL-5500 users:

Sharp has just released the latest ROM (v3.10, May 15, 2003) which makes the SL-5500 look and behave like the newer SL-5600. I *strongly urge* SL-5500 users with the old ROM (v2.38) to download and install this new ROM. The user interface with the new ROM is a lot cleaner and neater and has more stable applications (including a vastly improved Opera browser and much better PIM applications).

I've been trying to use the Zaurus for the last week or so. The product has turned out to be a mixed blessing.

The Good:

1) This is without a doubt the ultimate programmer's PDA.

2) You can write code, compile, and execute on the Zaurus (hard to believe but it's true).

3) There is quite a bit of good free software, including neocalc, which is a great calculator.

4) Amazon.com had a stellar deal on it.

5) Contrary to some of the reviews I've seen, the screen is very nice looking.

The not so good:

1) The software to sync with a PC (Win2K in this case) stinks. It crashes, hangs, intermittently refuses to connect, and requires special knowledge not included in the manual to get it to work. I've tried both Intellisync and Qtopia Desktop. Intellisync appears to be a hopeless basket case, but I was able to get Qtopia Desktop to work as long as I didn't have too many files on my CF (too many files causes a nasty crash on the PC side). Too bad I need to sync with Outlook.

2) I've managed to fry a 128Meg SD Flash by leaving it in during a hard reset of the Zaurus. That shouldn't happen, but it did.

3) The Hancom Suite (MS compatible Word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation viewer) is weak but usable.

4) The battery life is short (especially with a Wireless LAN adapter).

5) The MP3 software wouldn't play any of my variable bit rate files. I don't believe there is anything terribly unusual about them (other than they have been encoded using LAME).

6) The MP1 video is very slow and choppy at Video CD bit rates (like ~1 frame/sec). I've found it difficult to get a bit rate the works well for me when trying to take full advantage of the screen resolution. Perhaps the DiVX decoder that is being developed will solve this problem.

Even with these serious problems, I'd still consider it a great tool for a programmer and will give it 4 stars. For non-programmer types, I'd give it 1 star.

I just received mine two days ago and after 'playing' with it I can tell you that it's an extremely powerful PDA. Im not a Linux user nor do I know Java. I simply needed a quick way to input data because I'm in grad school. It took about 15 minutes to get used to the keyboard, but after that I was away.

It comes with a Word application that is compatible with MS Word. So while on the bus I was able to work on my research and simply sync it back to my main document on my PC.

Also I purchased a wireless network card because my dorm is wired and Im able to surf the Internet at blazing speeds. I even cut and pasted a Map into my Word application with no problems!

Truly this is a great little 'computer' and the price is good. I look forward to more applications in the future..

This review is with reference to the Zaurus SL-5500 along with the Linksys wireless CF card

First the pros...

(1) Screen is very easy to see and the colors are just gorgeous.

(2) Sound via the headphones is outstanding.

(3) Auto scaling of images is impressive.

(4) The web browser scaling is very good and the text is readable even at it's smallest setting.

(5) Keyboard is quite comfortable and I find myself using it more than handwriting.

(6) Transfer from Palm is very easy just beam the entire category over and it takes care of the rest.

(7) Availability of software is quite good... have ssh, wap browser amd mysql running on it. Download the command tool and you get your hands on all the standard UNIX utilities, including tar, grep and vi.

Now the cons:

(1) More memory would certainly help. Given that this thing has a built in mp3 player and a mpeg player 64MB of usable memory would be good. Of the 64, only 32 is really available.

(2) I would have prefered a regular Type II PCMCIA slot over the CF slot, but then again this is a pet peeve of mine.

(3) The built in PIM applications do need some work.

Overall impression... It's a really nice piece of engineering. The fact that it has a built in keyboard without sacrificing screen estate in my view makes it stand out from the Handspring, CE and Palm devices. That coupled with Linux makes it a winning combination in my book.

For what it cost, this product does the job. You cannot use it if you have any sort of protective cover / case on your tablet. This was fine as I wanted to get one of those pretty sticker / skin things. It does not come with a power supply. You get the dock and a usb cable. What you plug that cable in to get power is on you. It is not flashy, particularly sturdy or attractive. Just a functional hunk of plastic that will support your table on your nightstand or kitchen counter.

HP iPAQ H4350 Pocket PC

I was nervous about switching over to PocketPC from palm, and that I would lose my information,programs, capabilities... But boy was I wrong! The transition was as easy as pie!

This unit blows away the competition with features.

Of course it has WiFi and Bluetooth, is fully multimedia compatible. What really blew me away was the amount of software that it came with. While Palm boasts a large software library, it is also expensive to buy. Palm comes with the bare minimums installed to sync with outlook you have to purchase software, for example. This PDA acts exactly like your Windows Based PC. It really is foolproof.

The store that I tested this out in had wireless internet running through it. This device was FAST, and had no problems connecting to every website that I tested it out on.

I have not been able to find a more comfortable PDA device with more features, or a better value than this one! If you're in the market for a new PDA, I'd buy this if I were you!

I thought this product was great. I had a prior Ipaq and upgraded when it finally went south after several years of use. I was impressed with this models speed and ease of use. I love the keyboard as it make entry very fast. I use an advanced medical program to access disease processes, check prescriptions, and drug interactions. This model handles it very well. The battery life is fine. I use it constantly. The case is nice but somewhat awkward (chairs with arms, seatbelts...).

The one negative of the product is the screen is not designed to withstand the slightest impact. Drop it and its gone (cracked...). I made the mistake of putting it in my shirt pocket and it slipped out while picking something off the floor. While my phone and former ipaq handled years of clumsiness, this product will absolutely not. It was an expensive mistake, but has not prevented me from buying another.

I love my IPAQ. I synch it with my Microsoft Outlook at the office and then I have all of my contacts and my schedule right at my fingertips! I don't think I would buy one with the keyboard next time, as I don't use it. It is just as easy to use the stylus to point and click the letters on the screen when entering a new item. Perhaps I would feel differently if I were using it for email or notetaking.

This was put into service about two weeks after I received it. It was used about five times, for about an hour each. Then the unit crashed and would not even turn on. This particular product was very poor.
