WizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library

The Wizcom SuperPen Professional because it could scan many pages of text and had an on-board dictionary that can pronounce words. The SuperPen Professional concept is fantastic, but it did not work as easily as I would have liked. (...), I would expect the SuperPen not to be so cumbersome to operate.

My first problem was getting the SuperPen Professional to link to my computer using the included Serial connector cable so I could upload scanned text to my computer. Although I loaded the software from the included CD-ROM on to my new Windows XP computer which had very few other applications or devices loaded on it, the computer could not connect to the pen. I followed the instructions to set both the pen and computer's baud rate to 115200, but this didn't resolve the problem. The Wizcom website suggested downloading the latest software version, but I couldn't find a link to download the applicable software. An email to Tech Support explained that the lastest software version is available at:and scroll down to Install or upgrade your Desktop by downloading and running the QuickLink Desktop installation program (4.9 Mb). Click on the link and save the file to your hard drive.

Once the file is saved to your hard drive, double-click it's icon and follow the instructions.

A call to Tech Support resolved my connection problem. It turned out that I needed to have the flow control on my computer's serial port set to hardware flow control. This was easy enough to do. I just wish that this advice had been published in the manual or on the web site. Ultimately, I did get the computer connection to work with the included serial port.

When connecting, I got an error in the Quicklink Desktop software until I disabled an option for Microsoft Outlook on the QuickLink Desktop application.

I'm having difficulty getting accurate scans with this pen when scanning articles in trade magazines. The articles have fairly small text that is divided into three narrow columns. Since I have to scan each short line separately, it is quite time-consuming to scan selections from an article. I often have to scan three lines to capture a complete sentence. When I couple the slowness of the scanning process with the effort needed to correct mis-spelled or incorrectly read scans, it becomes faster to use a computer to re-type my notes than it is to scan them. The user interface on the pen for making corrections on this device is awkward.

The dictionary feature is nice, but it was more of a hassle to properly scan the word in question than what I wanted to go to to get a definition. Perhaps a separate electronic dictionary where you could type in the word would be easier.

I got the best results when holding the SuperPen at a 90 degree angle to the text.

I used the scanner to scan content from a book, and found that the scanner was more efficient when scanning pages with longer lines of text than it did when I scanned magazine articles.

The SuperPen Professional is a great concept, but I prefer that it was easier to operate.

Been working with mine for about a week, and am disappointed to report that the negative reviews are spot on.

I too had trouble linking it to the PC. Ran into the hardware flow thing. Easy enough to solve after an email to customer support, but they were vague enough that someone less experienced with the windows device manager might have trouble.

But the main reason I don't like it is that scanning is slow and not accurate enough. Really, you're better off with dragon speaking naturally, or just typing.

The whole thing feels like it's 15 years behind the times. The interface is horrible. The PC connection is deadly slow. The software is junk. (Can we at least import notes into a text file? WTF is a .qnt file? Now I've got to screw around getting that into a program I actually can use!) One really has the sense that these guys aren't putting any effort into keeping up with technology. These guys should look at an iPod. Given how much they skimped on everything else (program, connectivity, interface, screen, memory, chip, etc) I have no reason to think that this is a particularly good scanner.

A friend of mine has a C-Pen 20. That scans much faster, but has to be plugged in. C-pen used to sell portable versions, but I emailed their American distributer and found that they only have the wired one.

Total disappointment. As a graduate student, this device could have changed my life. Instead, it'll sit in a drawer, reminding me of the money I blew on it.

Bottom line: useless

My wife purchased this because she is studying for the GRE and GMAT and spending a lot of time looking up words in a dictionary while reading. The amount of time she saves using this pen is amazing. We haven't used any of the software that comes with it and don't really plan to, but for scanning words in books, even relatively small print, it works pretty quickly and has about a 95% correct scan and definition rate. The pronunciation tool works very well too. We were nervous of the price tag, but after using it for a week, I'd say the price is pretty reasonable. It also comes with a convenient carrying case (similar to a cd faceplate case for a car cd player). The only time it doesn't work on a scan is if you don't scan evenly, or if a word is split between two lines with a hyphen. If you use the proper method of scanning, which is pretty self-explanatory, you shouldn't have any trouble. If you're looking for a product to speed up your studying, this is it.

I read mixed reviews about Superpen Professional, but decided to take the chance and buy one at last christmas. I am so glad that I bought it and that too with a rebate (although it took 5 months before I got the rebate $$$).

The product works great, I have tried scanning at various speeds, and in reverse direction too ! It almost never fails to scan (works 98% of the time with great accuracy). I guess they could use a bit faster processor, but not a big deal. I am happy with the product and use it frequently. I have tried using it on books, magazines, newspaper articles. I have tried various standard fonts. It fails to work when the background is dark colored (white/off-white background works like a charm). It also fails when trying to read italic text. The scanning accuracy increased as I used it more often, AND much more after I read the manual to understand the correct style of holding and using it. I recommend to read the manual before using it, and be patient for 1st few hours. Once you get the hang of it, using it will be very easy and useful.

I've had it for a day and have not even attempted to connect via cable to the PC. BTW, the unit came with serial cable, and Wizcom is sending a USB cable for free. I am hapy with IR. I beam scanned text to my PDA and the PC. I can also receive text files from the PDA and the PC.

It has two main functions Dictionary/Thesaurus and scanning text to be trasfered. I bought it primarily for the first option and i order to hear pronunciation of and meaning of words I do not recongize. Its speaker is not too loud, so you need to bring it closer to the ear, but it has regular L/R earbuds with volume. I set the options to automatically pronounce a word after I scan it and show definitions. Medical, Computer, Wall Street, etc dictionaries are alredy pre-loaded. You can select in which order they interpret the word. It can scan and pronounce entire sentences.

The text scanning feature is good too, and accuracy is decent. Great for the road/airplane, particularly with a PDA.

It has "information" option where you can check remaining memory and battery life (in volts).

What can I say? This is a GREAT modem. It's fast, super slim, easy to use and setup is a snap (there is none really, drop it in, create a connection profile with your ISP info and you're set.) The setup was a little rocky, but that was due to my ISP, not the modem. I had to go farther than the booklet said to create a connection by filling in my TCP/IP settings as well, but no problem, I am used to fiddling with behind the scenes stuff. Due to the quality and age of phone lines in my area, connections are usually unstable and speeds are misleadingly slower than the connection status indicates, but this thing actually performs better than the modem I have nestled in my new desktop PC. This thing is cool!

Dell Axim X51v 624MHz Personal Digital Assistant w/3.7" TouchScreen LCD

This now-discontinued Dell Axim has several positive features. The only negative is that there's no slot available for a SIM card (the tiny card that you get from mobile phone carriers like T-Mobile). So this device is not compatible with major cell and wireless carriers that use SIM-cards for their phones and PDAs.

The positives are a fantastically gorgeous screen, a painless set-up procedure, and an intuitive interface the buttons are where you expect to find them, and reassigning buttons for my own business needs was a snap.

The device should work on open wi-fi networks; if your city or public library system has free wi-fi, then you should be able to use the Dell Axim if you're inside the range of a free wi-fi network. I say ** should work ** because my experience was hit and miss with this feature my AT&T/Starbucks wi-fi account doesn't work with this device, but the same logon name and password work just fine with every other mobile device that I have ever owned.

There is no slide-out keyboard but the on-screen keyboard feature is manageable.

My own use for this device is for managing product inventory with a program that was custom-built for a specific industry. I really do recommend this product for business use you might want to order one and see if it meets your needs before investing in a whole bunch of them. Also, since this is a long-discontinued product line, expect that you will be on your own when it comes to tech support, no matter who you buy from.

For my opinion, it was the best PDA made. Love to see it remade with "modern" technology (better batteries and processors, etc. Love the double card slots. I own a laptop, netbook, and iPad, and it's STILL the first electronic device I grab when I leave the house.

A working and useful pen computer is still the holy grail we've been seeking ever since Vannevar Bush's AS WE MAY THINK. And this device doesn't get it quite right, either. The stylus is nice and there is near-zero pen lag, and you can tap on things and click on things and write on things. But can an architect sketch a quick plan for a house, can an artist draw a sketch of a happy dog? Hell no. This device can barely let you write words using capital block letters. Not sure why the Pen Tablet has been so hard to get right, but this Windows CE Pocket PC device doesn't get it right, either. Doesn't even come with a default sketching program, so what's the point of making a pen computer if you can't draw with it? Nevertheless, coming from the Palm-Pilot "PDA" family of products, this device is adequate as an electronic Franklin Day Planner, for people with so many appointments with so many different people on so many different days that there's no hope to keep track of them all without a computer.

it is a nice little device, but I cannot get it to connect to my home wireless router since it seems to only have older security settings.

I was expecting to be able to download some aps and add some other things to this, but so far it has been disappointment due to having connection issues at home. I have not tried in free wifi environment.

I was able to purchase a wired LAN card that plugs into the device slot, but I do not yet have it operating since I need to get software drivers for the card [from the web].

Logitech diNovo Mini Keyboard

Ever since I saw and used this device at CES I knew I had to have it.

Well, it just showed up today and while it's not for touchtyping or long emails I am writing this review with it from the couch.

Most of the mini keyboards on the market are still quite large and have terrible ergonomics with some awful excuse for an integrated pointing device. The DiNovo Mini is different. The keyboard is small enough to keep with your remotes without anyone knowing you have an HTPC setup. I'm so tired of having a full size DiNovo Edge with a Gyration Remote Mouse taking up a ton of room. It's great for typing a lot on but there's no where to put it, and it's awkward using a real mouse on the couch or always holding your hands in the air and flicking around to use the Gyration.

The DiNovo has excellent backlighting that only has one flaw. It makes it too hard to see the blue function keys like the ' and " but you can see all the shifted keys easily. It turns on only the trackpad backlighting when using the mouse, probably to save power but you can light up the keyboard by tapping the large function or shift keys.

The buttons are all pretty small and the media (Play,Next,etc) are a little awkward compared to using them on a Harmony remote but it's nice to have everything on one pad and not have to pick up a remote or a keyboard or a mouse to do everything.

You can alt tab, use windows keys, launch media center and 3 programmable buttons.. There's even a CTRL+ALT+DEL FN key. Now that's planning.

One other minor issue is there is no scroll wheel for internet use. it would be nice if holding FN while using the mouse did a scroll, but it just turns the mouse into a up and down, kind of like scroll but you have to hold FN the whole time or keep moving the function switch (for mouse or Dpad) back and forth all the time.

I won't lie, it's just like using a AT&T Tilt or other landscape slider smartphone keyboard. Cramped, pecking or using thumbs and writing this review has gotten to be a pain.

But for opening up your media center files, even full WMP11 or iTunes interface, browsing the web, sending short IM's and emails, and most of what you do on an HTPC it's great.

I will still keep the larger Edge connected for gaming, but the gyration is going in the closet.

I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to use an HTPC in the living room, or actually uses their PS3 as a browser. It is not for desktop PC's at all, you will probably be better served with a much cheaper remote or something like the DiNovo Edge with it's media pad.

The bluetooth range is decent but not like Gyration's 100ft so it's not really a professional presentation tool, but could be used at short (15-20) feet distances reliably. It really does make a nice powerpoint tool since you can draw on slides and have full mouse and keyboard control in presentations while standing up. Just be careful about the range.

3. Connectivity is bit dodgy, obviously as it's now creeping up as the most reported problem from all the reviews.

4. The cover should flip back and out of the way, as it does get in the way and is annoying.

5. No scroll wheel -a feature which would've made this really nice.

6. Connectivity is only at about 15-20 feet, so forget trying to cross your large Home Theatre system like I did.

These con's are all acceptable minuses for something this nice and this easy to use. I can't see going without it now.

It's a nice keyboard when it works but it regularly loses the Bluetooth connection and you need to remove and replace the battery for it to work again. Very annoying and Logitech has no workaround for fixing it. Search the Logitech forums for "mini keyboard loses connection" to see the posts.

Until this problem is fixed, I would not recommend it. Logitech support has not been helpful with this besides saying it is a "known issue".

I ordered this keyboard, Logitech diNovo Mini, to use with my Mac Mini and Plex software to make a media center. While it is small, it does everything I want as a remote control. It works perfectly via Bluetooth with my Mac Mini in both cursor modes, touch pad or up/down/left/right.

The mouse function and keyboard functions work beautifully. I am sure there is a way to work around this though. The reason I gave it four stars is because the silly cover will not flip under the keyboard, it just makes things annoying, but it's minor.

Nextel i580 Rugged Case with Belt Clip

I've had this for over a year. Igot the phone because it is tough. I am a disabled photographer and if I go into the boonies want to know I'm not going to sit on or drop and destroy my 'Call for Assist'.

The case is tough. I'm tough on stuff and can pretty much destroy anything with little effort and minimal contact but this case has taken it well.

My *only* complaint is the thing tends to rotate when getting in or out of my Jeep as it catches on the seat or the seatblet. It will also rotate under my photovest and when that happens it can be snagged on something opoening the phone and running down the battery if one does not notice.

I'm in the habit of checking several times a day to make sure it has not done this.

So keep that in mind. Quality is excellent overall and the plastic key/screen covers are still clear.

PalmOne 16MB Expansion Card (m125, m130, i705 & m500 series)

Having lived through a Palm IIIx glitch that erased all my address listings, when I bought my Palm M505 I vowed to make the Memory Backup Card one of my next purchases.

It is tiny enough to store virtually anywhere (although not in a wallet or place where it will be manhandled). It backs up my Palm, including 3rd party software, in just over 3 minutes. Operation could not be simpler. Pop the card into the SD slot, press backup and off you go.

The card has a small lock switch, which keeps you from accidently erasing the data. One thing that Palm should include is a small case for the card. I use the case for my Sandisk 32 mb card to protect the Memory Backup Card, but this should really be included, especially since the card has exposed contacts that should be kept clean.

All in all, an elegant solution to system backup and worth the price for peace of mind.

I just bought the Palm m505 and this memory card. I assumed that it would triple my memory without a problem. I was half right. It tripled my memory, but only for applications that do not access other files. In other words, your Palm (and I assume any other device using this card) will not be able to access document files put on the card. Nor will readers on the card be able to access the normal memory. I use about 85% of the normal 8 megas on the palm and most of that is for documents and books. This card is useless for that. Right now I have installed everything that I can get to run on the card and its less then 1 MB. I have memory, but nothing that goes on it is very big and the big files wont work on it.

I gave it 2 stars because it did do what it said. If I find a way around this dilemna I will love what it can do. Bottom line, it promises more then it delivers.

Ok, i've read the reviews. I know what they say about these expansion cards, they dont' work, blah blah blah. So I bought one.

First of all I will tell you some things. First of all, if you are going to buy an expansion card, DON"T BUY THIS ONE! I bought it a few months ago and now you can get 4 times the space, 64mb for (less). Thats worth it. But meanwhile, about the card.

Ok, You cannot put like your date book and adress book on this. Palm protects that stuff so no one can read it from you. So you have to keep that on you handheld. I've put all of my games on this palm, tetris, Ace, Pinball, bomb, boxman, rally 1000, space trader, space war, tictac toe, UFO wars, and tons of other software. I keep all of my photos from MGI Photo Suite on here and all of my videos from TealMovie. It works like a charm.

The problem is if you fill the thing up more than 50%, your looking at a 10-20 sec wait everytime you want to access anything on the card. That isn't bad considering the space on it but if you are VERY VERY impatient, forget it. I love this thing, I own a 16mb (this one), a 32 mb (SanDisk), and a 64 mb (SanDisk). Don't be worried about buying from SanDisk which sells the 64 mb card, I've talked w/palm and SanDisk manufactures teh cards for Palm anyways so yoru getting the same product w/a diff. lable.

The reason this is 3 stars is the cost. (...) Search SanDisk Secure Digital card on Amazon.com and you'll find the better buy.

They offer two versions, a free utility that installs onto the card and the palm that allows you to do manual backups and restores. Or a very cheap shareware version that does automated incremental backups, encrypts the backup files. Both versions allow you to restore from the card without having to reload the software into the palm.

I don't know why Palm choose to sell this card at such a high price... it seems like they took an MMC card and put a backup utility on it, and doubled the price.

I will start with the most important message in this review: STAY AWAY FROM KOMPUTERBAY AND THEIR ITEMS. You can read my other posts and you can see I always take an reasonable, unbias approach I honestly enjoy sharing insights from my experience, elevating awareness, and impart knowledge to those that are interested ;-) I understand everyone isn't up to speed on this and that so I will try to explain issues as best as possible. If necessary respond with a comment and I'll try to help out!

I bought a Nook Color as a Christmas gift for someone and I purchased this item to provide additional storage. Since it is in the same price ranges as Class 4 16 GB cards this seemed to be the no-brainer choice. That's where I was wrong and our story goes downhill.

I admit I am a tech nerd and as any good nerd I did some additional research while waiting for the item to arrive. While looking I became a little concerned as I started noticing inconsistencies with the Komputerbay's listing and what's on other sites like Samsung's. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt so I waited until it arrived. This is when it went from bad to worse.

Upon arrival I did a quick visual inspection and here's what I noticed and why it is an issue:

1) All letters are white The card size (ie 16 GB) should be written in a different color from the other text

2) The letter "G" in Samsung I compared the font and it does not match Samsung's trademark label nor any other retail Samsung products I purchased in the past

3) The case is all black currently Samsung only sell a 16GB Class 10 micro SDHC card in their Plus series which has an all white case.

Epic fail on the visual inspection. I used the program h2testw to benchmark the speed and integrity of the card. Summary of the the speed test (another fail):

Write:7.2 MB/s

Read: 18.0 MB/s

(I'm not rooting the NC so I worry about doing a 4kb/32q benchmark)

For anyone and everyone reading a Class 10 card is required to have a MINIMUM write speed of 10 MB/s anything less, even 9.9, fails Class 10 and it is downgraded to a lower class. In fact a Class 4 SanDisk I have tested at 6.8 MB/s and should highlight Class 6 is a more appropriate. I can say confidently I did not receive a Class 10 card and I wish I could say at the very least it was a functional 16GB Class 6 but sadly there's more....a failed sector on the card resulted in corrupt files in about 50% of the card storage.

Almost immediately I sent Samsung a message containing the model and serial #'s on the back of the card requesting confirmation that this is a genuine Samsung card and that this is a 16GB Class 10 micro SDHC card. It honestly surprised me when they replied back with the following:

"According to our information this particular unit is not a Samsung unit. It does not match any model or serial number in our systems." The full email response from Samsung was included in the return box to Amazon.

To make this crystal clear since this is not a genuine Samsung product there is NO MANUFACTURER WARRANTY OR SUPPORT.

Following my initial contact I spoke with multiple people at Samsung on the phone and computer as they had a sincere interest. They reviewed all the information and specifically use the terms "fake", "fraudulent", and "counterfeit" during the nearly two hours. This was the first they heard of 'Komputerbay' they are not an authorized reseller of Samsung products. I can say this is the last time I'll do business with Komputerbay.

My 'product not as described' refund request was finally processed (Amazon gave me a free return shipping label). Taking this situation as what can be expected of Komputerbay, the way they conduct business, and the other products they offer I say one final time STAY AWAY FROM KOMPUTERBAY AND THEIR ITEMS. Consider yourself warned =P

I bought this to put in my tablet. When I got it, I did a speed test on it and found that it was running at 6.2 MB/s, which should be considered a class 6. This would be fine if I ordered a Class 6, but I didn't. I also checked out Samsung's website and like Rob Luft's review said, the 16GB Class 10 Samsung card should be a white card with black and orange writing on it. Also, the sticker on the package states that this is new, but the USB reader is so scratched up, the writing on it is just about gone (from what I am assuming is prior use). I just put in for my return and will be sending it out in a bit for my refund.

I finally decided to run a benchmark on this card. It is a total Knockoff! It benchmarks with results like the class 4 Sandisk cards I have, and the results are nowhere near the results I get with other class 10 cards I have. Also, this card didn't have manufacturer ID programmed in like my other cards do, just "0000". If you buy one of these don't expect Class 10 performance. The card has the class 10 logo but it is not a class 10 card and I doubt it is from Samsung.

I spoke with a Samsung representative and the product does not exist in their records. The serial number and variations of the actual serial number were tried, and the card does not exist in any of their records. Also, I was told all legitimate Samsung products are made in Korea This one was made in Taiwan. Finally, the color of the card should be white/silver and not black. I spoke to the rep for half an hour and he even asked other reps The card is fake. Now, all of the details have been given to Amazon.com Let's see if they do anything about it. This is the one time I have not done my research before making a purchase Ouch!

Acer Aspire V5-571-6869 15.6-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black)

For the price, this is a very wonderful laptop. It packs a 3rd generation core i5 processor and the speed is great.

PROS

1. Cheap and really affordable considering what it is packed with.

2. Very light and easy to carry around.

3. Really fast to set up and boot

4. Does not heat up even when I run high end 3D programs like solidworks. good cooling system.

5. Good battery life of up to 5 hours under power saver mode.

CONS

1. It has a really cheap feel and the keyboard keys are a bit smaller than the usual keyboard keys especially the enter key.

2. It froze on the second day of usage and I had to do a hard reset.

3. All the USB ports are on one side of the laptop and really close to each other. So if you have an usual sized flash drive, you could only use two ports because there might be no space for the third.

Well, If you are looking for a nice laptop for good performance but not will to spend too much, This is it!

I'm not quite sure why there are two reviews giving a one-star and three-star review for minor issues. This laptop, at $560, is very nice. Others brands have laptops with these specs for over $700 easy. It's lightweight, quiet, and quick. Granted, there are some design flaws: USB ports mashed together on the left hand side, keyboard slightly smaller than usual with sometimes sticky keys, touchpad without mouse buttons (would have liked mouse buttons). However, the functionality of the computer is great it's quick, it's cool (doesn't heat up to 100+ degrees like some I've used), it's chic (simple design, but nice), lightweight, and the sound isn't too bad either. You're not gonna want this computer if you want to do hardcore gaming on it, but it's wonderful for students and general use. The keyboard comes with a full number pad on the right, which deviates the keyboard slightly to the left. I wish they would have left the number pad off and just made the standard keyboard bigger, but these are minor problems. Compared to other computers I've spent over $900 on, it's good. I wouldn't say it feels cheap, like others have mentioned. I like it so far. If anything goes wrong, I will definitely report back here.

This is an excellent laptop for those on a $500-$600 budget. It features a brand new 3rd generation "Ivy Bridge" Intel Core i5 processor. Nothing slow about it. In general, the laptop looks and feels like a more expensive piece of hardware. Very thin, sleek look. Light as a feather. Because of the relatively thin bezel encasing the display, it sort of feels bigger than it actually is. Keyboard is very nice and sturdy, easy to get used to for fast typing. Trackpad looks and feels like a Macbook. All in all, it is one hell of a nice laptop. This can be purchased at Office Depot in store if you're interested in checking it out before you buy it. Worth every penny.

VERY THIN (almost to a level of Ultrabook (but not really as it does not have the SSD Drive and the high endd Materials they use like aluminium)and LIGHT Laptop. I was so surprised of the thinness of this product and the specs that it has given (3rd gen 1.7 ghz i5) at a very competative price (got it for $499).

PROS:

-Very Thin for a 15.6 inch Laptop.

-Has 3rd Gen i5 Intel Chip.

-Surprisingly small power block/lightweight cord.

-Screen has Great Colors (Not saturated like others).

-Minimalistic Style (You have an option to change its appearance easily).

-Heat and Noise transfer to hand are so Minimal (you just can't put a gel cover over the keyboard as they design the airflow to go thru the "Keyboard's outlines" passing thru the left side where the fan outputs the airflow).

I would say 25% of the keys I strike do not register. You have to strike extremely hard for the keys to register. I lose a lot of time with my work having to go back and correct my papers for keys that didn't register. This was a waste of $700 for me.

I received a discounted sample in return for my honest opinion.

I expected this to be heavier, but I forgot how lightweight aluminum really is. It's also roomier than it looks from the pictures. So I got more room AND less weight. WIN. I would worry a little about the strength of the latch if I put as many cards in this as I normally carry, BUT some of my cards are just store loyalty cards and not credit cards whose magnetic strips need better protection. I appreciate how this is good for both men and women. No one objects to silver! It's sad that we have to worry about identity thieves, but this is such a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Handspring Visor Platinum (Silver)

This model of Visor is more expensive than Visor Deluxe, so what's their difference?

I'll list the difference btw Deluxe and Platinum, and let you be the judge to which one to buy.

-First, Visor Platinum is the FASTEST PalmOS PDA with its 33mhz processor. Other PalmOS PDAs have either 16mhz or 20mhz. Visor deluxe has 16mhz. However, the speed of the PDA is a little overrated, since most Palm application do not require high speed processor anyway. but hey, the faster the better, right?

-Second, Visor Platinum has 4 bits display while Visor Deluxe has only 2 bits display. This means that, Platinum can display 16 levels of greyscale, while Deluxe can display only 4 level of greyscale.

-Third, Platinum has PalmOS version 3.5 while Deluxe has version 3.1. This is important because you can not upgrade PalmOS on Handspring's PDA (due to USB problem). So, this means you'll be stuck with which ever PalmOS that comes with your Visor forever. But this is not a big problem as it may sounds, b/c any PalmOS's are essentially the same thing.

-Lastly, Platinum has cool sophisicated silver color, while Deluxe has teenage iMAC style colors.

Another product I recommend if you are considering buying Visor Platinum is PalmIIIxe. PalmIIIxe also has 4 bits display like Platinum, and it also comes with PalmOS version 3.5. I'll make a list of difference btw Visor Platinum and PalmIIIxe for you. (Note that this list also include some of the differences btw Visor Deluxe and PalmIIIxe)

-PalmIIIxe is the same price as Visor Deluxe, which is about fifty bucks cheaper than Platinum

-PalmIIIxe comes with only 16mhz processor like Visor Deluxe

-Visor has expansion module, which means alot, you can add many many feature afterward, you can make your Visor am MP3 player too! And you can also easily add more memory to your Visor, while for PalmIIIxe, you can only add 2MB flashcard.

-When you buy a leather case for your Visor, you dont have to stick a valcro to the back of your PDA like you have to for Palm. (Palm need a Valcro to hold it to the case, while for Visor, there's a plastic holder attach to the back of the leather case, so you can jsut put your Visor securely in there)

-Visor comes with a fast USB cradle while Palm comes with slow serial cradle, so if you buy palm and want a fast synconizing, you'll need to buy a USB cradle separatly.

-Visor comes with a good quiality stylus, it has solid feel of metal, and if you open it up, there's a little screw driver and a reset pin inside. Palm comes with a piece of plactic stylus; buy a new stylus cost about fifteen dollars.

Are these difference worth the more money you pay for Platinum? Let yourself be the judge, see what you need.

I was very surprised by some of the negative comments at cnet. I then realized that most of them had been written by people who didn't have Platinums, and for some reason, had some grudge against the Handspring. I think Mac haters have gone to the PDA world looking for more people to annoy. In any case, this is a great product and I've really enjoyed mine for the few days that I've had it. Downloading Avantgo and other apps was error-free--I'm not sure what happened to the other reviewer on this site. It is "painted plastic," but it's an awfully nice paint job, and the thing doesn't feel cheap at all. It's not as slick as the Palm V. However, it's human to get nostalgic about forward-thinking designs in our old, outdated technology. ;-)

I'm a bit put off by people on other sites (including the cnet review) claiming that this product is for "power users only." This seems awfully ignorant of the fact that these products are obsolete in two years or less. Have you whipped out your Newton lately? For fifty bucks more, you can get a 33-mhz processor that may keep you ahead of the obsolescence curve by a few months, and give you a lot of speed before then. Suck it up and get with the 21st century.

A note on the screen: it does give a bit, almost (!) like paper might if you were writing on a legal pad. It's not irritating to me at all, though I seem to notice it less than others in my office. Match it up with screen protectors and you have a very realistic writing experience.

Good luck and have fun--one last thing--Handspring has been great with shipping and support so far. I had mine (in MN) within 30 hours of ordering it. I expect Amazon can do the same (I have never had a bad experience with Amazon, period). I might add that Amazon has one heck of a good deal on Rhinoskin Ti Sliders--$50! I have never seen one less than $100, even on the Rhino site.

Buy Handspring Visor Platinum (Silver) Now

As an upgrade to the Visor Deluxe it is obviously the same thing but faster. Noticeably faster than any other Palm device out there, but not really amazing. You will probably only see a big difference in computationally-intensive applications, or those with large databases, like Kanji Hanabi. The speed is the best thing about this product.

The worst thing about this product is the platinum case. Instead of the translucent plastic of the Deluxe model it is a painted gray plastic, and when that paint wears off (and it will) this thing is going to look like a cheap toy that's ready for the trash. The battery compartment cover doesn't fit properly it rattles. I expect more in a... device.

The clip-on cover is still a problem. Whereas the Palm III series cover flips back on a hinge, leaving a hand free for the stylus, the Handspring cover comes off. You can turn the unit over and clip it on the back, or put it down somewhere, but you have to do something with it before you can write. A clumsy design.

The big thing with Visor is of course Springboard modules. I can forgive the cover for the ability to plug in GPS, Modem, MP3, software, extra memory or even a digital camera or a phone. Palm has nothing to rival this, and now a year after launch some really useful Springboards are appearing, although some are ridiculously priced -... for a 64M MP3 module!

Apart from that... the device is very light (I was surprised to open the shipping container and find it inside, it felt far too light to contain a Visor) and includes batteries, cradle, software CD, brief guide and a few product pamphlets. The feel of the screen is not as smooth or pleasant as that of my Palm IIIe but I expect it will get better with use.

The included software installed and performed a hotsync on my Windows 2000 USB/Office 2000 system without a single problem. USB hotsync is FAST.

Unfortunately Handspring politely declined to help when I asked if I could get a set of translucent plastic for my Platinum. It would be best to see one of these before buying, or be prepared to return it if unhappy. It REALLY feels cheap and nasty.

This will be an excellent travelling email/authoring package with the Targus folding keyboard, RhinoSkin Ti slider case and CardAccess Thinmodem unless I decide Ihate this plastic so much that I return it for a Visor Deluxe instead.

I spent a fairly long time considering various handhelds available, and those that would be out in the future (including some that were based on Linux, very tempting for me). I decided, however, to go for a Handspring Visor Platinum, since it ran Palm stuff and would be able to draw on a rich history of PalmOS software. That, and the better display and CPU speed over Visor and Visor Deluxe.

After actually buying this little gadget, I must say I'm very pleased overall. The speed is excellent, the display is crisp, the Palm applications work great. The HotSync is very slick and works most of the time, although some nasty bugs cropped up when I tried to upload one app, forcing me to reboot if I wanted to sync again. One major downside is they force a USB cradle on you. While USB is fairly common and the added speed is nice, I would've liked the option -I don't have USB set up on my Linux box, so I have to buy the serial cradle to use it without Windows. I don't like spending [$] for something that could easily have been a simple option.

The only major problem is the screen. The display itself is nice. The screen material, though, is problematic. It's prone to scratches. I've had mine four days, and already have scratches in my handwriting area. They're faint, but they're there. My recommendation: buy screen protectors for this baby, you'll definitely need them.

Pros: Great CPU, crisp display, tons of Palm apps available, handspring modules make for nice expandability options, lots of cool games available (grin).

Cons: Serial cradle is a (fairly expensive) separate purchase if you want support on pre-98 versions of Windows, or BeOS or Linux. Screen is easily scratched even from daily use with the included stylus, which means you have to buy often-expensive screen protectors.

Overall: A great handheld if you don't mind a USB cradle forced on you and if you don't mind dropping [$] for screen protection.

Have you ever had a Game Boy from Nintendo? Well, I would be surprised if someone told me that the creators of Handspring Visor did not get the idea for Visor from Game Boy.

Like a game cartridge, Springboard Module gives the flexibility to add functionality that is (not available in the PDA itself but) built into the module. Theoretically, Visor is infinitely expandable (Handspring's claim), albeit Visor can handle one module at a time. If only these modules were affordable. Since Visors (regular (2 MB), deluxe (8 MB), platinum (8 MB), prism (8 MB)) run on the same OS that PalmPilots run, not only can Visors do everything their PalmPilot counterparts can, they can also do a lot more (via Springboard Modules) that PalmPilots just can't.

Visors started out cheaper than PalmPilots (Palm has been lowering PalmPilots' prices since the introduction of Visors by HandSpring), but are a little bulkier than PalmPilots. No, don't get me wrong, Visors are still sexy and colorful.

I bought a Visor Deluxe from HandSpring six months ago. After exhanging it for two more defective units, I had to finally return it. A few months ago I got another Visor Deluxe--this time from Amazon.com. No problems so far, everything is working like magic. I now have a Visor Platinum and have experienced no problems--I am still using the same software that installed when I had my Visor Deluxe.

The other day I had to use my Visor Platinum at night--in the dark--and I was able to use the backlight. Though I was able to see the screen clearly, the backlight doesn't show where the 'home', 'menu', 'calculator' and 'find' icons are. We still have to guess the area below the screen for these icons. I hope Handspring does something about this.

I have been trying to get it to connect for a mounth now and still cant get it to connect verzizon panteck breakout smartphone maybe cuz phone has hotspot on it. Wanted it for a more better connection than hotspot

I bought this mobile router in 2011.

I use a Virgin Mobile 3g usb wifi adapter with unlimited service.

The router works very well with a magic jack plus connected to it also. we can use our house phone in our car when we connect it to our magic jack plus and then connect the magic jack to the mobile router. Nothing like a Cellular House Phone! It also works with Linux computers.

LG Original OEM Horizontal Leather Pouch Case for LG enV Touch VX1100 / VX-1100

Fits the enV Touch well, but the material just feels cheap especially the inside. The inside of the case is thin shiny canvas the kind that makes an awful noise when you run your fingernail over it. I contacted the seller for a return, but they make it a bit complicated (don't pay for return shipping, must email company to get an "RMA" to include with return, must write code on outside of packaging), so it's probably not worth the $13 refund.

In short, not the greatest quality, but I guess you get what you pay for.

This phone is ridiculous when it comes to unintended calls. I see that they changed the lock feature on newer phones (a slide lock), but those of us with locks that are activated with a button...it's a life saver.

My wife and I both have version 1, and it's quite normal for us to receive calls from each other that results in listening to the other person walking. We've also inadvertently called other contacts...very embarrassing.

This case gives you the protection LG should have figured out when they developed it.

I bought this for my husband so he could clip it onto his belt. It worked well until he got the new iphone 5. This pouch is too small for that larger phone. I am now using the pouch for my iphone 4. I keep it my purse. Perfect.

I usually buy cheap cases off of an auction site. I usually try to spend a decent amount though. Usually around 7-8 bucks. These cases range from OEM (Motorola) and generic ones. I dunno why, but the cases always break on me. If the case swivels, the clip will break on me after 6-8 months. I had the clip completely rip off one of the cases in 2 weeks. Anyways, I digress.

Fitment wise, this phone is made for an LG EnV Touch. The phone physically fits inside the case, but it's pretty loose. One time I was running pretty hard and my phone flew out of the case. I believe within the first week the leather started tearing off the clip, which was pretty insulting. Usually it takes at least a month for that to happen.

At that point I would have given it a 1, but it's been about 10 months and the case is holding up pretty well. The leather is long gone from the clip, but the rest of the leather is fine. The swivel belt clip hasn't broken off the case yet either.

This review probably won't help many as this phone is so old, but I guess maybe I can warn some people about the phone itself. This phone has an issue where the battery doesn't make good contact with the phone by design. Therefore, it will turn off sometimes on it's own, or if you set it down too hard. I'm on my 4th EnV Touch and can't wait to get rid of it. The screen is also starting ot peel off on it. I have no idea how that happened because it never did that with any of the other replacements. Hopefully it's not the case?
